Mk5 Golf GTi on Top Gear

Featured Replies

looked rather tasty i have to say came out really well, shame about the price though.

And the Cupra was faster round the track.

I bet there will be a lengthy thread about that on CupraNet

did look good, but price is way to high and like the Dr said slower than the cupra. seems like its starting behind the times with only 200bhp

Mk5 Golf looked the mutts nuts but

seat and skoda seem to get the higher powered units before VW.... so does this mean we will get a 240hp octy II?

An STi or Evo would certainly be a quicker car , but the Golf is going to be a far more useable everyday practical drive and in the real world thats what makes for decent sales figures.

Makes me wonder how much Jezza was being paid by VAG for being soooo nice about the car , usually there is a "but" with all cars , but not the GTI .............perhaps I'm just a sceptic !

Hmm, a 5 door version is available. I could be tempted for my next car. 20k and I bet no cracking 0% deals though unlike Skoda...

Oh well, a year to ponder...

Why did it look better than a normal Golf?

but its not jap crap... and people will pay that for a VW badge?

and it wont fall to bits like a scoob or only get 20mpg or cost a fortune to insure... etc...

but then thats why we drive skodas..... only problem is there is no vRS to buy right now.

The only part of your post that has any truth is that people will pay for a VW badge.

You buy VW and get a poorer built, less reliable car with poorer dealers than Skoda or Seat!

That says more about the owners than the cars.

Lee,

you used to be correct but tbh recent experiences with dealers from board members would indicate the skoda dealers have now toed the unhelpful VW line....

as for the 20mpg unreliable and fortune to insure being untrue.... why did you get a skoda over a scooby?

The mk5 Golf did look good but I agree, 20k is far too much.

As for the practicality side of things they didn't go into how big the boot space is. IMHO if you want a practical car with good performance just wait for the new Octy vRS to come out. You'll save yourself a few grand, get a bigger boot and possibly a more powerful engine.

;) I'm not biased, honest. ;)

Because my daily commute is to change from 20 miles to 120 miles a day.

I have had Skoda for my second car for over eight years and have a very good local dealer so I headed straight for Skoda when I had to change.

I'm still going to buy a trackday toy but undecided whether to buy an older scooby or a Caterham/Westie.

Scooby was totally reliable and well built, insurance wasn't too bad but I am 35. :)

MPG was what I expected and I've always had big V6's etc so wasn't a big change.

The main problem with Scooby ownership is servicing and parts. A main service with new front pads and discs cost me over

20k seems pricey, i had a look at a 260 EVO new it's 21K, trade price on the RS was **** so i walked.

I know the EVO's expensive to run but obviously you take that into account before you buy{

Exactly my thoughts :)

Personally I'd rather spend 20K on the R32 :D

i liked the car...but... i woudlnt have one....its i am assuming aimed at people in my age bracket 20-30.... its just lacked uuummm sex appeal... amd from a 2.0ltr turbo in a smaller car then the octy the 0-60 time was just a shade under the otcy vrs and with the same top speed... go figure ??

A similarly powered A3 is around the same money. Have VAG lost the plot somewhere?

He was pretty nice about the Vauxhall Tigra too! Must have been having an 'off night'!!!

what about the new 3 door astra aswell, the quick version is gonna have 241bhp as standard, thats a easy 280+bhp once tuned, and for under 20K,shame its a Vauxhall though.

it did look very good aswell, nice and sharp.

Plato rated it highly on 5th Gear too. I'd still rather have a Skoda though, although rumours about the new VRS pricing are going to put it not much below the Golf, it seems.

i thought they said it would be priced "well below" the new golf gti ??

we'll see

Although it's all hear say until confirmed, my local dealer suggested a price of around

they are all moaning beacause they called it a "cupra" when it was clearly a "cupra R".some toys being thrown from the pram :rofl:
