Using '9' to mean any digit, there was a fashion for people from Rhu (not far from where I lived at the time) to use RHU 999 or 999 RHU plates. One local novelist made the comment that they were "emphasising their supreme cleverness in living in a place who's name only has 3 letters!"

Very common in the South West of Scotland / Ayrshire area are vehicles with registration plates that have AYR on them.

Hmm, I don't think I can read or even clearly see, other drivers number plates on the move in my rear view mirror.
