Daylight Running Lights

I presume Yetis come with DRLs, can they be turned off as on Golfs etc? I'm undecided on the right thing to do, it would be interesting to know what Yeti owners in general do. Apart from Volvos I don't see many cars using them, am I going to get flashed all the time if they are on?

There seems to be a general difference of opinion on their safety effect, I have read an article stating that some motorcyclists don't want cars to all have lights on, as at the moment motorcycles using them do stand out more.

I believe there is a European directive or something from next year saying cars have to have them, but don't know whether they will have to be switched on.

Certainly the 4 that came with me on Saturday all had there's on, and all the others I have seen (3) have been the same. I understand they can be turned off, but why? They are proven to aid conspicuity. And yes they will be compulsory from next year.

My DRL's were switched off when I picked the car up, but after deciphering the manual I did switch them on. As to being flashed all the time, I can't say it's happened to me.

Hi,

my dealer supplied mine with them turned off but I soon changed that (Maxidot or using the indicator arm method). Until the Yeti meet I actually hadn't seen another Yeti with them on emoticon-0112-wondering.gif and I've seen quite a few.

All the new Golfs appear to be using them, although I have noticed with the new Fabia only the Elegance spec appears to have them fitted, despite as Llanigraham points out there becoming a requirement from next year (fitting off but not use off).

Personally I think they look very effective on the Monster emoticon-0100-smile.gif

I Agree with TP.

Mine were on as standard ,see no reason to turn them off.

:)

Good Evening,

Our car came with them turned on, after a few weeks I switched them off. It's questionable whether DRL's actually promote safety for other more vulnerable road users, such as motor bikes and cyclists.

If conditions require lights I have the intelligence and ability to make that decision.

Just my 2 pence worth.

Mine has them, I think they make the monster stand out so I'll be leaving them enabled. Not been flashed at by anyone yet. The fiat 500 has them also. I think it does aid visibility and allows others to see you clearly.

My Yeti came with the DRLs off but I have them on now.

Motorcycling lobbies say that they are concerned that if all vehicles have DRLs, it will tend to make bikes overall less conspicuous. As a motorcyclist myself, I just want to be sure that I can see and be seen.

It seems to me that if it is to become law - like seats belts - then we may as well get used to using them if they are provided with the new car.

I have yet to take deliverey of my SM but when I do the DRL's will be turned on.

The aim of any set of lights is to make the user conspicuous. How can a motorcycle be less visible because a car has a set of DRLs on?

The biggest problem with motorcyclists around the North Wales roads is excess speed and total disregard for other road users. Weekend cyclists usually from Liverpool or Manchester, out for a "burn up", on the country roads.

Thanks Lady-P that made an interesting read.

switch is in the fuse box i believe, well it certainty is on my fabia tsi

not all motorcyclists are the same, ive been riding for 26years...clean licence still, and reguarly ride to wales( lovely place)....as for drl's, mine will be left on

My A2's lights have been on for each and every one of its 107,000 miles for the past 9 years, day and night. So the DRLs on my Yeti will also stay on.

Hi Jessica,

Here is a link to a thread about DRLs although its title is DLRs!!

http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/156299-dlrs/

Lots of discussion and useful info

Kind regards

Lady Penelope

Thanks for the link, the photos by The Plumber and Agerbundsen were very interesting, to see what they actually look like when on, methinks ours will be staying on, as they are not too obtrusive and flashy-looking! Jessica

Indeed. Some days I like the Audi ones, other days I don't... But I think I prefer the Yeti's unobstrusive ones. BUT because the Audi ones are LED people know they are DRLs. With the Yeti's looking like foglamps I hope Mr Plod does not stop me and try to book me for driving with my fogs on! emoticon-0145-shake.gif

As an aside as anyone notice what an Audi DRL does when you indicate? The DRL on the side that you are indicating on goes to half output so as to not hide the indicator behind the glare of the light! Now if this is the case with a DRL and they KNOW the glare of these will obscure the indicator why do they insist on putting the indicator right next to the headlights (and not in the bumper as in the olden days), which at night completely obscures the indicators?! Double standards that just don't add up.

Ive found with the DRLs on my fabia being roughly in the same place as peoples fog lights i get flashed quite a bit. Ive resulted to opening the window and lecturing them on the fact they are drl's and not fogs.

People will come around come 2011 when all cars will have it...

I still regularly get other drivers flashing their lights at me, presumably because they think I've left my fog-lights on :( I just wish there was some way to flash the real fog lights back at them to make them realise that they're DLRs, not fog lights.

My Wife keeps on at me saying - "Why do you keep driving round with your headlights on?" For peace and quiet I turned them off. Not sure how much fuel that will save.

Chris.

I thinkl the visibility issue is about concerns that motorcycles will be less obvious if every vehicle has its lights on.

Regarding speed and disregard, I totally agree. This kind of riding, besides being dangerous to all road users is selfish in the extreme.

37 years, clean licence,

John

7000+ miles and no one has flashed me during the day light hours (and not at all at night since the dlightly high off-side headlight was tweaked).

Why turn them off? They don't cost anything to be on and might just make the journey safer. Having driven 30 miles in a convoy of 4 YETIs at the weekend they certainly do stand out in the mirror.

hola folks...I haven't been in for a while though noted this with much (self) interest.

DRL's are good on anything on the roads. Even in bright sunlight a vehicle in the shadow of a row of trees/hedge is going to be noticed a lot quicker with them on rather than off. Dunno about being a motorcyclist though as a biker (apart from my SM I run an old Norton and a new Guzzi) DRL's no matter what they are on = good

Cheers
