Alternative to new vRS

Featured Replies

Might need my flamesuit after this :)

I owned a Fabia VRS when they were first launched a few years ago. Briskoda cant remember my details so I look like a newbie :)

I also bought for one of my employee's an Ocatvia VRS late last year - complete with LED chav lights :) I do get to drive it.

I have yet to be convinced that any of the diesels should wear a VRS badge. In the Octavia it is a tractor and I dont have stunning memories in my Fabia - kept it 8 weeks.

Hot hatches should be petrol and from my experiencef the DSG box is great. I think that Skoda's biggest problem isnt the engine or gearbox it's it's interior quality.

Somehow it feels 30% below the quality of a VW. I sit in my MKVI golf and the the VRS and really notice the difference in the quality of feel of the switchgear. I expected it to be the same.

There is still the issue of driving dynamics - the Octavia VRS is OK, but against the Golf it does feel 3-5 years behind.

With regards to the MK2 I think the Fabia is a big step up from the MK1. Be interesting to compare it to the Polo GTI. To me the Fabia looks good and has the correct engine and gearbox. Just wish they could improve the low rent interior.

Hot hatches should be petrol

I respectfully disagree :) I love my vRS and dont miss my last 2.0l (petrol) one bit! its faster, more econimical and more fun to drive :)

Hot hatches dont have to be petrol - the MK1 vRS proved this IMO!

I am going to speculate but we may see a diesel later on down the line....as seat did with the ibiza

CR

I've booked in with my local SEAT dealer to test drive the new Ibiza with the 2.0TDI CR engine. It's should be there in a few weeks.

On a test-drive last week (involving a reasonable amount of motorway), The average mpg didn't rise above 32.1 :o

Thats one reason whilst i'll be sticking to the mk1...

The Polo is the obvious alternative to the Fabia. Today, when I went to look at the Polo, I popped into the Audi showroom and picked up a brochure for the new Audi A1. This is due to appear in the showrooms in 3 months time but, apparently, one will be available to look at next Sunday. Of course, this is a more expensive option but it comes with quite a few extras. A 1.4tfsi Audi A1 S with 122ps is £15,345 OTR. A 1.2tsi VW Polo SEL with 105ps is £14.710 OTR. A Fabia 1.2tsi Elegance with 105ps is £13,150 OTR. Less discounts, where appropriate.

A point well made. 'The CR should be driven before it's slagged off. I've been out in the Fabia today and I'd have one like a shot. The interior isn't great, it needs some silver trim like a "proper" vRS but apart from that, the power output down the local mway was stupendous. I tried the same route in my vRS and the Fabia seemed a lot quicker. Could be the fuel..my vRS is CR and the Fabia isn't but they're both DSG. I wasn't convinced by the looks in the press using the vulgar green paint but in red, white or black with no silly alternative roof colour, sat on its 17's it looks the business. The price is a bargain too IMO but there are some essential options which should be standard. The Octy has cruise but the Fabia doesn't. Xenons would be nice and are no doubt on the options list. PDC should be offered - I guess that's on the options list too. I was tempted by the Polo GTi but I've changed my mind. They really do look different in the metal. The Ibiza Bocanegra just looks vulgar to me and I wouldn't even bother looking at it. BTW Simpsons Colne have three in the showroom, two of which are sold, so somebody else likes them besides me.

Dont you mean Post #51 !!

Chins...You need to drive a CR 170 diesel in the vRS before you give your opinions on it

Having just ordered a Fabia II vRs, its a completely different car and far superior in everyway..there is no comparison at all to my old Fabia PD 130 vRS

No I did mean post 58, but I see where you're coming from !

Looking forward to getting in a vRS (will be in a very good position to do this soon) and see how it compares to my car.

Also have a poke about and see what Forge bits will transfer over, pretty sure most will change.

Be sticking with mine though, for me the Ibiza is a better looking car.

Unfortunatly regardless of how good the new VRS is its still as ugly as all the other Mk2 Furbys which is really disappointing. Heres hoping Skoda do something with the SE version to make it some kind of competitor to the Boca. At the minute tho Seat have it hands down on looks.

When I first received the flyer for the new vRS I was very very disapointed to find out it has the DSG gearbox and a petrol engine.

Like the green paintwork and the black alloys, but when I was at Skoda yesterday I was very impressed seeing it in the flesh but unless they offer it with a diesel unit and manual box I can't see myself in one, now if only I can get the seats out of it as they look mega comfy.

Will the estate version of the vRS have any comparable competitors ?

I can only think of a few cars that size (or thereabouts) with estates (clio, 207, new Ibiza ST - any more?) and none of them seem to have a particularly "hot" variant

(the whatcar website lists Fabia estate rivals to be

Mazda 6 Estate

Mercedes Benz E-Class Estate :giggle:

Its not for everyone but I really love the DSG, ultra rapid off the line and combines the ability to have fun and just cruise when you want to. Normally auto on the way to work and paddles on the way home. Having come from a fair few diesels into the petrol, dont miss it. Yes the range is quite low (tank isnt massive) its so worth it.

Mrs Stig is looking to replace her Ferbi 2 Sport tdi 1.9 next year and realy likes the new vRS Ferbi. We test drove our local stealers on Saturday. LOVED IT!! Definatley at the top of the list at the moment.

We then went to the local Fiat and played with the 500 Arbarth. We left disapointed. Cramped, bouncy hard shocks, asthmatic over 80 mph, poor rear head room for me (I'm 6'1''), gave me a sore neck and made me feel sick in the back. So thats off the list. :dull:

Saturday will, see us testing a Fiesta Zetec S, then going to see if the local Seat stealers has a Ibiza FR and maybe we'll have a look see at the Citoren DS3??:smirk:

The Suzuki Swift Sport looks rather nice and we have a stealers 5 minutes walk away................. :p

Brand new Swift just launched so great deals on the previous shape one.

Waiting to see what engine the new swift sport is going to get, a lot of the dealers are suggesting that with vw now owning 20% of suzuki that it will have the 180bhp tsi engine, one thing they all agree on is it will be a competitor for the clio/polo/fabia rs/gti/vrs one dealer even told us his mechanics are allready starting going on courses to learn about the vw 1.4 tsi, prices are expected to be around the 13.5k mark which will certainly put the it at the front price wise, and tempt the mrs out of her swift

Any idea if the new Swift Sport will have 3 or 5 doors?

Rumour has it it will be 3 and 5 door, but there are soooo many new sport rumours about i really don't know what to believe

I’ve got one parked outside my house too, and its wonderful.

Its getting quicker as I get more miles on it, and I’m getting quicker as I learn how to handle the dsg.

I knew the limits of me old oil-burner but this beastie has raised the bar much higher.

I could moan over mpg loss but lifes too short, just walk the 10 miles extra that you wont get from your gallon. Its worth it.
