Mazda RX8 - what's it like...

Featured Replies

Anyone driven/got etc a RX8? What's it like this rotary ****el engine? Does the door arrangement work?

Just curious really....

Believe they are still having some problems with the engine. Local dealers demonstrator blew up after just a couple of months!

Shame, really nice looking car too.

The looks are growing on me. They have used the rotary ****el engine for some years now, and I havent nyself heard of any problems with them.

Blew up after someone in here had taken it out :D

would love to drive one.

Looks amazing, and with such a teeny engine (1.3, remember) the blokc sits so far back iin the bonnet, its's approaching mid-engine territory (ok, that's a "slight" strech, but you get the picture)

Mazing output for such a small engine too.

Fuel consumption is bit heavier than a coventional four-pot, but for a sports car, it probably isn't.

Plus you get to have a school-boy sense of fun with the engine name.....

And when you sell it you're officially allowed to say....

"I had a ****el in my last car"

:naughty:

The brother-in-law has got one, 25K with all the extras.

Very nice car indeed and the doors work well, there 's room in the back as well.

They do look very nice - if only I had 25k :(

Des,

I think that what you really mean is "It's not an octy RS, it's not a skoda, therefore I hate it and it's no good and furthermore the build quality is very poor"

* just to make it perfectly clear that this is a JOKE

Yep, well according to the Brother-in-law anyway. Gets better with age.

I saw one broken down on the M1 north of Leicester (RAC had to carry it), some time early this year (it was an 04 model).

I've been told they use LITRES of oil every few weeks :(

Car looks great though. Useless for me (I'm 6'9"), same with the Nissan 350Z:eek:....:(

Seemed roomy for mere mortals ;), 4 real seats (drive tunnel splits rears :thumbdwn: )

Some guy at my work went from a Ford Fiesta (1.6 etc) to an RX8!!!

Our dealer is also a Mazda dealer so i see a fair few of them. I was quite dissapointed the first time I drove on, even the high power has a distinct lack of go about it, guess thats due to the low torque.

Lots of people complain about clutch judder, its usually down to the rotary engine's lack of torque that means you have to give them some revs to pull away, which people dont so it judders and/or stalls.

The new 'Renesis' engine is a side port rotary so they have solved the rotor tip problem of earlier cars. But the rotor tips are still lubricated by the engine oil and therefore the oil is burnt, hence the oil consumption. Is lack of oil and people not topping them up that usually causes failure.
