we have 3 of these on order at work, thankfully i have a 2.0 pd unit, interested on how they are running etc myself, as a part owner im not convinced about the smaller unit, we do about 1000 miles a week and carry alot of kit, my car breezes it so will see how they do.

I bought mine pre-loved, but it comes up 1 year old next week with 15k miles on the clock.

No problems as such, mpg is a little disappointing; not up to the 1.9TDi that it replaced. Driven like Sister Economy, the particularly economy conscious nun on the way back from economy training on a particularly economical day in Economy Town, I can squeeze 60 mpg out of it and driving like I stole it I can get low 30's (out of town, same route, different mind set). The old 1.9 would do over 70 and mid 40's in the same conditions.

Overall I'm averaging 49 with fairly careful use which is well below what I hoped for but it's a hell of a lot better than the Fabia.

At first I was disappointed by the performance but now I'm not so sure; it's very lack lustre low down but over 2,000rpm it's OK and holds on to the torque almost to the red line. Because the torque is so linear it feels slower than it is

The other thing with the engine characteristics is that it's necessary to hold on to the revs a little so that you don't allow the revs to drop off the torque cliff when you change up which is OK when you're on a mission, but can seem a little odd if you're not in a hurry.

Having got used to the engine and stopped worrying about the consumption, my other main moan is the very high level of cabin noise.

That help?

your fuel economy isn't that great if driven carefully, i drive mine with ladders, tools, spares and a roof box fitted and getting about 45-46mpg and i dont drive so slowly, i really love my 2.0 pd car, its got lots of power when i need it, i think the lads replacing there 1.9 pd cars at work with the new 1.6cr units might be a tad dissapointed.

I've noticed I am getting rather dissapointing fuel consumption - it's 2 months old and done 3K.. i do a lot of mixed driving (30 and 70). It's averaging about 45 MPG..

I am driving it carefully and not readlining it everywhere, and (depending on road conditions) changing gear when it suggests.

Should I be getting better figures than this?

Any advice?

The 1.6 was a bad idea for the Octi, to underpowered, whats it going to be like in the Superb :'(

Lordy, I'm averaging 48 in my vRS :|

likewise ! or thereabouts

45mpg outta the 1.6 CR just shows you gotta work it that much harder and the fuel usage suffers.

Here in Portugal the figures are between 5.5 and 6.0L/100km.

Yes it does need more fuel than the older 1.9 and maybe the 2.0 tdi.

I think with, when available, reprograming it will waste less fuel. It happended with my Megane 1.9DCI.

Mine only has 5500km ( 2 months), the filter issue never showed up yet.

They say that only over 15000km it´s when the engine will be completely free so it should use less fuel. ;)

So I've got nothing to look forward to then :'(

What surprises me is the delta between the published figures and the figures I get on the road. On the 1.9 (pre-PD; not entirely sure what I should call it) I was typically getting about 5-10% under the stated figures so expected about the same on the 1.6. God knows how they got the published figures!

You know, I think you might be right.

One thing I forgot to mention was the stalling... I've stalled more in 2,000 miles in this one than I did in 99,000 in the old one; there's just not enough go at the bottom end

yes i stalled the one test drove 3 times, i guessed it was me getting used to a CR engine, but maybe not then?

5k in 3 months and not that impressed with 46-48MPG on average. This is driving as gently as I can and still actually move up any kind of gradient.

So disappointed I'm off to the dealers tomorrow to see what they would offer for it as a part ex. :(

I have to admit that I've enjoyed mine a lot more since I stopped watching the mpg (which is OK rather than great) and just started driving it.

And 46-48 in the Forest doesn't sound too bad as it's all up and down and covered in sheep :giggle:

Noticed on the way home from work after reading this - that the A/C is on by default when in AUTO mode.. So I started thinking, maybe this is affecting fuel consumption.

Will be diriving to work tomorrow at the same speed I always do (traffic withstanding) and let you know if this affects consumption. I know A/C units do affect it - but surely they can't affect it that much.

A/C will typically drop your mpg by about 10%

I tend not to use mine unless it's really hot and stuffy.

I was thinking of ordering a 1.6CR diesel last year because of the excellent mpg claims. Up to 10mpg better than the 2.0PD IIRC for equivalent duty cycles.Disappointed to hear about the 'poor' economy.

I bought my current car because of long lead times for the 1.6CR and I wanted rid of the Hyundai while I was off work....

Getting well below the official combined mpg and never had better than 50mpg for a return trip.

Will need to test this a few more times but..

Sat on the A500 - nice, new, long straight road, no hills - set the cruise control to 60 and sat back..

With A/C turned off - Getting between 90 and 102 MPG - this is OK with minor variations in the road, etc.

With A/C turned on - Drops down to 60 to 69 MPG.

MASSIVE difference..

My brother has told me to get the car up to a mate of his to check out the scratches left by the biker - so I'll ask them if I can get it on their rolling road and do the same.

Maybe this explains why the GreenLine had no A/C when launched in order to get those figures of 80+ MPG

Will keep you posted.

What I don't know, is what the aircon loading was on my old 1.9. As it had climate control, I'm not sure if the aircon was always on, or came on as and when required as determined by the controller.

If its the same A/C unit as in my 2.0TDI, its a variable compressor - engine load depends on how hard its working.

I have to say that I'm reading this thread with interest, as I'm getting 48+mpg (calcualted) from mine!

Am glad I've dodged the 1.6CR option for my next car now...

Interesting, but I've tried this with several cars and never noticed any significant mpg difference. I leave mine on auto most of the time. A two way mpg is probably needed to account for any slight hills. Slight hills make a BIG difference to my mpg.

I've had the standard 1.6 "S" Octavia since December and done 32,000 miles as a taxi driver, I get between 45-55 MPG around town and 60ish if i'm on a run. I'm pretty happy with the consumption although to be honest i'm not sure what I was getting from my old 1.9PD. The DMF is starting to knock and will need to be sorted (prob converted to SMF) at the next service due about 40,000 miles. What I am very happy with is that on a variable service I am getting 20,000 miles between services compared to the 1.9PD which I only got 17,000-18,000.

I think Skoda have cut costs on the latest Octavias. I have noticed the build quality being less than on my old 06 plate, the light switch feels tiny rather than solid, the glove box very much the same poorer quality and lots of other little quirks. I have noticed quite a lot of rattles from inferior componants within the cabin. I'm sure if there is things I notice from a laymans point of view there must be hundreds that are undetectable by me.

Over all i'm pretty happy with the car and hope I continue with it to 250,000 miles like my old PD but who knows how the smaller engine will cope with high mileage?

I'm going to do a direct comparison tomorrow on my CR vRS.

I did the drive to Devon and back a month or so ago, with a full car/boot, for a family weekend away.

We go again tomorrow, so this time I'm going to switch off the A/C (if I can, depends on the weather being dry), and see what difference it makes to the average mpg.

I got 57mpg last time.

Reckon I'll beat it? :wonder:

thanks really good feed back, nice to see someone getting good mpg from the 1.6CR, do you have to drive like a little old lady to get that good mpg

I bought my 1.6 CR in May and have driven 4000miles. On the 20mile daily commute I average around 50mpg, half town and half dual carriageway. In the morning the congestion in town is normally heavy. I don't drive very fast but if the road allows 70 mph I would never stay 60 like many people do. Last weekend we went north to Edinbrough on A1 which is mostly single carriageway it did 61 mpg to and 57 back with 4 people on board. I'v never driven a PD Oty so couldn't appreciate their power but for me 1.6's far from underpower, you just need to use the right gear for the right situation, at lower down rev you do need to switch gear more often(than my wife's 1.4 Corsa), it never struggles with uphills(like the 1.4 Corsa does). What I'm really pleased with is the creamy smooth engine note, in the cabin you won't hear any diesel clatter what so ever.

The road noise was intrusive, I stuck some sound proofing material to the boot and under the back seat at the advise from relevant threads in this forum and made a big difference. afterall the road noise is not only heard in th 1.6CR. Considering the balance between the overall package you get and the appealing pirce it's well worth having a good look at for those people to whom money and eco matters.
