VRS handling

somebody mentioned earlier in the thread about tyre pressure have you checked them , it could make a lot of difference.

I'll make sure the pressures are spot on before I leave tonight.

I have an issue with my car but only lately. it was perfect up to now.. It feels like it's on soft tyres especially on the back. Cornering is ok but when at high speed on the straight and if any uneveness it feels unstable. If i overtake on the straight on slightly uneven ground you have to work more to keep it straight as you overtake. When doing logs one night at high speed when i braked the back felt like it was swaying and for a second thought i was going to lose control!. :wonder:

Micky - just curious as I have been getting this myself a bit recently, what suspension set-up do you have on your car?

I am looking at a whiteline rear ARB, just looking at options is there any point in having the adjustable one i note they do a "standard" non adjustable bar for £50 cheaper. i am not sure i would fiddle with the adjustable bit so not sure its worth it? Any ideas anyone if they are worth it as i havent seen anyone write ups from anyone having a non adjustable one.

Seondly how hard are they to fit? i am not too bad at the spanner spinning but dont have a pit or big jack to get the back wheels off the ground together would i need that and can an amater spanner monkey fit it? with or without special tools?

Me too: having just had a 4 wheel alignment/camber etc setup done, will fitting affect it? :wonder:

my fabia with very over flated tyres sounded just like what your saying. I had trouble keeping up with a Mecr LWB sprinter van driven by a driver that was not a quick one!

So far the only time the Octi has felt unsafe and unstable was when it snowed last year, other than that its a good car.

Hauptman, mine is definitely not stable or predictable so there's definitely an issue. In two minds whether to refer this to the dealer, Vindis Cambridge, or look for an independent alignment expert. Anyone got the correct camber settings etc for the FL?

On fuel consumption, this wouldn't be an issue for me if I felt the car was performing well in other areas.

I say refer. My VRS also came from here and they had to look at a few things for me post sale. I found them to be very good, better aftersales than a lot of other garages. Drop me a PM if you want to talk about this further and maybe we can share experiences

Just standard suspension. It was quite good up to now. Recentyl fitted new Bridgestone tyres on the rear, wonder if that has any bearing....

My Octavia is on Michelin tyres and I've always been impressed with how well it grips and just feels solidly planted on the road, it can be dull in comparison to the Toledo I had previously but the Seat had a lot more trouble applying power and sticking on the corners.

Would be interested in chatting about this further and finding out a bit about your experiences. Tyre pressure check did improve things but handling and performance still feel inconsistent.

Also recorded another average of 34 mpg over the 250 mile journey home. As I said earlier I was using Momentum 99 for the first time. Ordinary unleaded always records average 36 mpg for same journey. Weird thing is that the fuel gauge seemed to indicate I had more fuel left than normal when I got back!

Other thing is that the service symbol has now appeared indicating service required in 400 miles. I asked for it to be changed to fixed servicing before I took delivery so I'm a bit surprised to get this message at just under 9000 miles?

Fixed servicing is every 10,000 that it is why it has flagged up if you have already done 9000

I realise the fixed is at 10k. The issue is that the computer is telling me to get it done in 300 miles (is 700 miles early). The odo just ticked over onto 9k this morning.

I wouldn't worry at all. Mine often varied between 7/800 miles early, & spot on. I think it varies a little by your type of driving, oil quality etc. You may find that after another few hundred miles it still says service in 300 miles.... :)

The fixed service is actually 15000km which is 9375 miles... That would explain the 300 mile warning at just over 9000 miles...

Ive just owned my 2006 VRS TDI for just over 3 weeks now and ive got to say impressed with the handling.

It definitely feels planted, I do agree that its not sharp and would love to change that aspect with spending thousands of pounds! I use to own a Civic Type R and that was ace.

Thinking of fitting Eibach springs to help!

As for body roll, I haven't experienced any yet!

yes you have, every car on the road suffers body roll. some more than others obviously. i can assure you that you have body roll and quite a bit of it at that.

im not a fan of just fitting springs to a car. when you shorten the springs, you reduce the oem damper travel resulting in a poorly damped car. my personal opinion and experience makes me go for a performance damper/spring combo

Rather than springs, it would be better to go initially for a Whiteline Rear ARB and an ALK (Anti Lift Kit) for the front. Both relatively cheap and easy to install. See how you find that combo and maybe consider a spring/damper combination later.

Personally I think if you feel the need to change the entire suspension then you may have bought the wrong car in the first place.

I found the Neuspeed RARB to be very effective on my VRS.

Try Ebay there lots of anti-roll bars on there too.

Cheers Micky,

I have the Vredestein Ultrac Cento tyres which are very soft. I found that running them at 36psi helped (and later found that their website recommended this pressure). I was just curious as I was wondering if my Koni FSDs were softening up or if it was down to my new tyres...I think its mostly the latter.
