Screen wash fluid

Featured Replies

Does anyone know if I should be using a specific screen was in my Furby VRS?

Can you recommend a good one that I can get without going to a Skoda or VW dealer?

The recommended one is the VW one which is apparently specifically designed for the fan jets that are on your car..... I don't know of any other approved ones, although I have used some pretty potent Scania stuff, my mate liberated for me, with no problems :D

The light came on yesterday and I need to fill it up but my nearest dealer is miles away

Any screenwash should do the job, just the stuff designed for the fanjets doesn't foam as much as some other stuff does.

Rob.

I topped mine up at the weekend (light came on a few times before hand).

Just used normal cheap stuff from local car shop (

Does anyone else find the proper Skoda stuff smells worse than most of the others?

I tend to turn the fan off before using the washers if I've got it in the reservoir.

Only if you don't use it for a while - in this current weather it's not in the bottle long enough to stagnate! :D

Chris

I'm quietly convinced the normal stuff works fine, and if it doesnt you can always clean the jets out ;) -

The used to block on my Citroen ZX all the time, whereas the Rover 100 ones appear to be fine without having touched them for ages, it probably depends on the normal working pressure. If it's high enough most cr*p will be blown out so they'll keep clearing themselves :)

Be very careful what fluid you use as the fan jets are almost impossible to unblock. I had to replace a jet on a Passat because I'd used cheap Car Plan fluid from Asda. It seemed to produce waxy 'blobs' which blocked the jet.

I use the stuff which you can buy at Shell Garages (which I seem to be visiting with alarming frequency!  ).

Is it ok for my Octy?!!!

I use Halfords own make - they seem to do special offers from time to time. Incidentally, whatever you do, don't use washing up liquid (I'm sure no-one does these days).

how do you adjust the fan? one of mine is doing a good job of cleaning the car behind!

simple you can't

You may find that the jet has come loose or it's not clicked into place correctly.

Believe me, it's rarely in the bottle long enough to stagnate - I could do with (much) a larger bottle! I just find the Skoda, or should I say Quantum, stuff smellier than Halfords. The one thing I will say for the Quantum is that the bottles are small enough that I can keep a small amount made up in case I have a problem.

the quantum stuff isn't the correct stuff for the fan jet washers.

I use Decosol screenwash from Tesco - you pay a bit more for it but

a) it's more concentrated so you use less

B) it seems to do well in low temperatures as well as on insects etc.

c) it doesn't foam that much (probably more than the Skoda stuff, tho')

boyced - as bertj said, check that it is clicked into place correctly. You might need to lift the scuttle panels to get underneath the jet to check. If its a dodgy jet I think you can replace the jet (I'm sure K will tell us if I'm wrong). However, I understand the scuttle panels can also warp, causing much the same effect. If so, I think you're in for a new scuttle panel.

Why economise on screenwash? The correct VAG-branded Windscreen Clear - PN G 052 164 A2 - costs around

I've ended up buying it from Shell for now, but will try and get some of the proper stuff in advance for next time.

I usually get mine from my nearest VW garage, but lately I've used a couple of fills worth of halfords own-brand

well it happened after the scuttle panel was taken off to put some wires through...

That's interesting. It's what my local dealer uses for every service.

Hmmm... At the local dealership after my service the other week and they said that you should only use Skoda screenwash otherwise the other branded screenwash can cause the pipes for the rear jet to fail and therefore cause a leak in to the rear section of the car. Thats ok if you've got flies on the inside of your car, but if you haven't it's a problem.

Wasn't sure if it was a ploy for more business or not? But I took the rest of the bottle that they put in my car at service time anyway.

I use Halfords cheap special offer stuuf that comes in the blue bottle, smells ok and does the job, but might change to the Skoda screenwash when it runs out as I only get flies on the outside of my vRS!

Hicksy :D
