rSAP spec'd Mobile Phone suggestions

Featured Replies

Hi All,

On the recommendation of a local Skoda dealer saying that a HTC wildfire would work in my Octavia i am currently stuck with a near £200 mobile that actually "isn't compatible" with the factory fitted bluetooth system. I phoned the dealer back who then started saying we'll maybe it will only work in some cars, etc, etc. My question is can anyone recommend a newish mobile that is guaranteed to work with the bluetooth system? What is apparently key to all this is the rSAP profile which the HTC doesn't support.

Have used a Nokia 6230i till now which since having this car and using in my previous Seat Leon has worked fine.

Cheers.

Any Windows Mobile 6.1-6.5 can support rSAP with a small app found on internet, including all by HTC. Also most Nokias support it.

rSAP seems to have been developed mainly by Nokia, so it seems others don;t wont to licence it including Apple.

My HTC Touch HD works fine, and Android does not support it apart from a crippled version on Samsung Galaxy S which read only sim contacts.

You can check some supported models here http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/SIM_Access_Profile (german)

I'm waiting for someone to confirm with a new GSM III+ module installed on their cars to confirm do Iphone and Android devices get on with the new supposedly BT profile that works in a same way as rSAP.

afaik you can get a bluetooth cab file for the HTC Desire to get it to work as a workaround. 2.2 will have rSAP so won't be a problem at all then hopefully.

The Desire is already on 2.2.

As long as the phone you pick is a current model, is not an iphone, then it should work. For Andriod it must be the latest version, and Windows mobile must be 6.5 or later. RSAP is a nokia development, but all manufacturers now support it except apple it seems.

My Desire on the latest ROM doesn't have rSAP... I would avoid Android for the time being if you want rSAP

My old Windows 6.1 mobile also had rSAP

This is out of any reality. What new phones? Phones are separated by platform, Symbian, iOS, Windows 6 or 7, Android, BBerry.

Symbian (mostly Nokia) supports it. iOS (Apple no), Windows 6.1-6.5 yes with a freee small app, WIndows 7 no, Android no (apart from as i mentioned GalaxyS), Blabkberry some models.

So you can not recommend any new phones apart from IPhone as neither Android or Windows7 have it.

Check spec of phones before you buy, or with luck the new GSM III+ module will be available to buy and swap the current rSap models that we have with a hefty ~400 quid difference i bet.

WM 6.5 and 7 dont need the small app, my HTC TD2 with the stock HTC WM6.5 rom supports it out of the box with no additional software.

MY HTC HD2 worked fine with rSAP but the desire does not. Like others have said android is a miss at the moment.

Sorry, what i meant was small app is for WM6.1. 6.5 has it and so do many cooked 6.1 roms. On my TouchHD stock i installed the small app, and with custom XDA roms it came with it be it 6.1 or 6.5.

As i have asked many times, please when someone receives their new cars with Premium GSM III+ to share with us their experience with non-rsap phones :)

I have a Samsung Galaxy S which reads all of my contacts (incl the google imported ones) and acts as a WiFi hotspot for my iPad...Nice!

My Galaxy S on Android 2.2 works sweet as a nut - I had some problems on 2.1 but nothing at all since the upgrade. And the SIM contacts issue can be worked around very easily, hardly "crippled", merely a minor and infrequent irritation to get your 'phone contacts onto the car.

As has been said, modern Blackberrys typically support rSAP, so a Storm probably would work. The Nokia N8 is hot out of the blocks and almost certainly has rSAP since, as has also been said, it's a Nokia protocol (and the carkit is built by a spinoff from Nokia, IIRC).

By far the cheapest way is to replace the bluetooth box for one that supports both rSAP and HFP. If you've got Octy FL, you probably have 5N0 035 730 * unit under your seat, it supports rSAP only and is completely and utterly useless. What you want is VAG option 9WZ - part number 3C8 035 730 A. Quad band 2G and dual band 3G module, works everywhere in the world, supports rSAP with SMS display on screen, supports A2DP, voice commands (where supported/coded), automatically selects regular HFP bluetooth profile for any phone that doesn't support rSAP. Full plug and play with any newish Skoda factory setup with white maxidot - works with active mic in interior light cluster (unlike Fiscon which needs its own mic wired in) - you literally slide drivers seat, slide black cover open, unscrew old unit, unplug cables, plug new one in, tighten it to the floor, slide cover back on and move your chair back and it's done. I got mine off ebay for £130 (most listings are in USD as Americans are fond of these units because of compatibility with their networks), cheaper than any smart phone with rSAP would cost, and if my next phone supports rSAP then hey - so does my bluetooth unit. Can do instructions with pictures if anyone's interested.

Thanks for the info. I will keep an eye on Ebay. Do US models work for Europe GSM? As i can see ATT woks fine, so with quad band 2G 3G i guess should work with any GSM provider.

I don't mind paying for the extra box as once and for all we would be able to connect any phone to it so well worth it. And maybe I can sell the rSap only box to someone :)

Please give us some pics when you have time :)

Cheers.

Sorry to bring this a little off topic, but I'm looking to fit a bluetooth kit in the new year and I have an iPhone 4. So I should be looking for a 3C8 035 730 A unit. How would this integrate into my non rSAP phone? Would SMS and phone book on maxidot not work? Would it just be a handsfree kit?

How it looks is that SMS will not work in Maxidot, otherwise phonebook yes, or am I wrong?

I oredered one, so will see in a week or so when it arrives how and what does it do.

Whilst a US quad band phone will work here to make and recieve calls, the 3G part of the phone will not work here as they use a different incompatible system. You will get 2G though, so thats 64kbps data.

The adverts say will only work with "white maxidot" i dont have maxidot so would it still work in my Octy FL

I find myself asking the question "Why would you want to have a text facility on the car, when it's illegal to drive & text?"

SMS is shown on Maxidot.

The 9w7 will have Phone Menu on MFD but the 9wz won't.

The 9wz has the feature to receive/read/write/send text messages but the 9w7 won't

9WZ (3C8 035 730 A) is compatible with just about everything on the market. Will do rSAP features for rSAP phones and will work with iPhone 4 in regular hands free, non-rsap mode. You'll have phone book, signal status, battery reading from your iPhone on maxidot and on Bolero/Columbus. screen.

I didn't know it was possible to buy FL VRS without maxidot? Without maxidot you don't have any method of pairing phones to new bluetooth units.

Technically you can't buy it without maxidot as to have bluetooth you need a MFSW and to get a MFSW you need DSG! If you could spec BT on its own it includes maxidot anyway.
