exhaustfumes/smell in car cabin

hi guys, when i leave my 07 superb 1.9 tdi 100bhp, ideling or running on a cold morning to defrost, or im driving in very slow traffic,

i can get the smell of exhaust fumes in the cabin, left in running for 5 mins this morning, fan on full to clear screen, and there was a strong fumy smell in the car, any ideas what could be wrong?? its fine while driving at normal speeds do,

Could be as simple as the wind blowing in the wrong direction from the back of the car to the front. Or could be a leak on the exhaust system. Put you hand over the tail pipe so it prevents the exhaust gasses from escaping, eventually it should build up enough pressure to stop you from blocking it. If not I would say you have a leak. Before you do it just check that the tail pipe is cool enough to put you hand on.

have you removed the bungs at the bottom of the battery compartment to eliminate the water ingress problems? These are effectively there to stop gasses coming back up and into the pollen filter. Also check your EGR pipe for cracks.

My 06 2.5 V6 does exactly the same thing but only during the cold weather (sub zero). Tried to pin it down by starting the car with the bonnet open and I can smell exhaust fumes for a short while coming up from the turbo area. As it doesn't do it during warmer weather, can only assume that it's something to do with cold seals on the turbo or something similar.

Once the fumes come out into the engine compartment, they quickly get dragged in through the pollen filter and the smell enters the car. If it's really cold, I tend to start the car with the climate control switched off, let the engine run for a while, then turn the climate control to auto. This way, the fumes don't get dragged in and the water's only just getting to a point where it might do some de-icing. The fumes doen't last for long but I really don't know where they come from

One of the diesel spill return lines from injectors leaking diesel onto the exhaust manifold perhaps?

Possibly .... but if it was leaking, it would always smell and it never does it when the temperature is warm, only when it is sub zero, and only for 30 seconds or so.

I've had a really good look round, and felt everywhere I can when the engine is cold and there's no feel or smell of diesel anywhere. The only thing that happens is that exhaust fumes come into the engine bay for a brief period after start up on sub zero conditions. Have just learnt to live with it really.

Ye, mine does this. Only does it for about 10 seconds when i first start the car. Reckon i'll try to find one of those charcoal activated jobs, because i've tried changing filter with a normal one..

Had same on mine. lifted bonnet and started the engine and noticed a puff of black smoke coming from turbo area, It was the flexible exhaust coupling thats comes off the turbo. Need to address this problem but won't use the stealership for parts..

probably totally not relevant but I have been having simialar problem on my Octavia 1.8T which I think I have sorted this problem as I have said it probably aint relevant as I dont know the diesel lump but on engine there is sort off a Y shapped piece of rubber that comes some where from the back of the engine and then splits into two one end goes straight to the top of the engine and then the other down in front of the engine. The one in mine that goes straight down towards the front of the engine has perished and become totally detached at the Y section of it. I have bodged it and the smell has gone.

As I said its probably totaly non relevant but hey its worth a 30 second glance.

Probably not the cause in this instance, but my car was stinking of fumes when sat idle whilst deforsting the car in the mornings, bit of smoke on fire up if the engine did not fire on first crank. I got the fuel filter replaced at local dealer, problem has sorted its self out, no more stink. I had done 30k on the previous fuel filter.

i had the same problem.

turned out the flexi hose between the Turbo and the Cat was shot.. watch out though as the flex / Cat are one peice, and no one seems to make a (decent) replica to the Skoda origional, which is about £750 :'(

however, find yourself an exhaust fabricator and get them to cut out the old flex and put a new one in... jobs a goodun.! :thumbup:

Senioraftermarket.co.uk do produce and sell a complete range of repair flexi sections, I have used them when my "specialist exhaust fabricator" failed to find the correct part to fix my wife's Polo exhaust - which like in this case otherwise means dumping a working cat.

My 2003 2.0 AZM started to smell last year. Only when this breather tube (see photo) was replaced it stopped the smell of petrol and hot engine in the cabin.

This pic is for the AZM engine but it gives a clue what to look for. It was broken in the top.

many thanks lads was in for a well over due service at the weekend and turns out its the flexi pipe on the cat is gone, and yeah they are one piece, so whole lot has to be replaced.

As mentoned above, cut out the old piece and weld in a new flexi, how much were you quoted for a complete new one?
