Should I order a Yeti?

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone,

I'm new here and have been reading all the Yeti threads with interest.

My OH and I test drove a Yeti 110 TDi 2WD Elegance last week. We were both very impressed with the car and liked it very much. Our situation is that we have 3 dogs that travel with us regularly and we tow a caravan approximately 6 times a year. The caravan is a new Bailey 1320kg loaded and we are looking for a tow car. Does anyone on the forum tow with a 110? We would have liked a Yeti 140bhp model but have since discovered that a 140bhp model is only available in 4WD which we don't want.

Our other option is to buy an Octavia Est 140bhp which is a lovely car but we prefer the look and driving position of the Yeti, it has so much more character than the Octavia. :p

I was told yesterday that if I ordered today I would be looking at a September delivery!! :o

Welcome to the forum Sara. As lovely as the Octavia is there is nothing that matches the Yeti's cheaky stance and rarity. And to boot is an amazing car too ahving won many an award as you might perhaps know.

Also remember that in the days past Volkswagen's most powerful car diesel engine was the 110hp 1,9 PD. Plenty of people towed with that much power. And before the adoption of turbo technology to diesel engines people towed with even less. How soon we forget! So you will be fine towing with a 110hp Yeti I'm sure.

The Search function on this site is a bit hit and miss, but click on the "gear" icon next to Search at the top right of the forum page - if you hover there it will say "Advanced Search". Then put in what you want and under "Find in forum" select the Yeti forum. You will get a lot more detailed results - especially on towing.

Go and buy or you may regret it for the rest of your life.:giggle:

But seriously, I would suggest you make a "tick list" of what you need in a car and compare the Yeti to that. Three dogs - how big? Would the Yeti with the seats down carry your dogs and any other luggage?

The 4x4 option may be a very good choice if you are towing on grass or soft ground and - do remember- the Haldex will only connect the rear wheels when it senses slip on the front. Otherwise the 4x4 is just a 2 WD in normal mode. Think about the last two winters, would you not have wished for a 4x4 during this last "ice age"?

I run the 140SE 4x4 and have had 15 months of super motoring. It suits me except for the small boot which can be a bind when the grandkids are on board.

Welcome Sara.

I don't have any dogs or tow a caravan (yet). I also have a modified 4x4 CR140 Elegance.

I can however recommend the Yeti. It is an excellent all round vehicle.

September sounds about right for delivery for a diesel. Petrol ones come sooner.

The Greenline 11 should also be able to tow the caravan.

Mike

Just curious why don't you want a 4x4 model? Is it becuase you simply don't need it or because you really don't like the idea of all wheel drive?

Thanks so much for your rapid repiles. :)

I don't have a problem with 4WD, it could be very handy to have, especially as I live in a small village and have a 30 mile trip to work. We were looking at ways of economising on fuel, tax and insurance costs, which made the 110bhp 2WD the most sensible option for us.

Hi Sara.

You did want a totally unbiased verdict - didn't you. I think you may have come to the wrong place, we are all Yeti nuts around here. Some say we eat snow for breakfast and have big furry feet!

Have a look at the 1.6CR Greenline model too I'd say! I think you're going for the 2.0TDi and you're planning on towing you might as well get the 4x4 as it will be handy for towing and you benefit from extra torque and the extra 6th gear. If you just need 2WD and want to get excellent fuel economy, the 1.6CR is an impressive unit.

I have this car and am sure it would make a good tow car. You need to bear in mind that the towbar is incredibly expensive. I have fitted towbars to all my previous cars so I could use my large box trailer. As theYeti towbar fitted properly is at least £450, and up to £750 depending on who does it and it needs to suit the car electronics otherwise the stability control and rear sensors may not work properly, together with bulb fault indicators, this was no longer viable. I have now sold my trailer and am doing without. To compare it cost me £150 for a decent towbar on my last Skoda from a specialist.

Buy a Yeti asbroad and they often are available fittedfrom the factory, but are not here due to weight penalty pushing the car up into the next co2 group for tax.

Sara makes a good point. It has to be said that at £1700 more for 4x4, and with worse econmomy, there's definitely a case for the 2wd if you don't need the 4x4, especially with fuel the price it is!

The Yeti in some ways seems to fall roughly into 2 rather different price groups: 2wd, with less powerful engines only, so relatively inexpensive especially in lower spec; and more powerful engines available in 4wd and higher spec only, so while still good vfm, hardly cheap. In other words if you wanted the 140 for example, you'd need to pay for at least SE spec and 4wd ie £3200 over a hypothetical 2wd S, while the engine itself is only about £800 over the 110.

Well this afternoon I am going back to the dealer to look at the Yeti and the Octavia again. My OH and I really need to hurry up and make up our minds because the longer we dither the longer we will have to wait! The estimated delivery date is 6 months for both.

I am favouring the Yeti 110bhp SE in Muscavardo at the moment and I've been quoted a really good price with an online company.

Excellent choice.....(but whats an OH) ? :wonder:

OH = Other Half :giggle: A more politically correct version of SWMBO - or the asexual version.

Oh, of course! couldn't have been HWMBO could it......

Yeah right. When would that happen!

Whoever or whatever it is, I hope s/he is not truly asexual!

Oh I was not implying Sara's OH ito be anything. I was just noting that an OH can be of either gender.

According to my dictionary, asexual means without sex or sexual (ahem!) equipment.

Hi Sara,

Good choice, Yeti SE 110 TDi - same car I have, but mines Aqua blue.

I have a couple of huskies and they travel in the Yeti a lot. I don't know what kinda dogs you have? but I would advise one of these boot liners My link

and also a Skoda Yeti rubber boot mat. The flap on the liner helps prevent the plastic boot lip being scratched by dog claws, and helps a lot with the wet and mud that dogs love to bring into a car. It's also a near perfect fit in the Yeti boot.

Hope that's of some help :)

I would have thought with three dogs to carry an Octavia Estate might be a better bet - more floor area in the boot than in the Yeti? - and also available in 4x4 or Scout spec as well...

I have only seen the yeti from a few yards awat and have not had the chance to see one at close quarters but i do like its appearance, my wife isnt so sure, one thing I would want if I did buy one is all wheels drive.

I cant really see the point in having a car that is designed to look like an off roader with just front wheel drive. This doesnt just go for the yeti either it goes for a number of other 4x4 pretenders.

Having said all that I cant afford one at the moment but even if I could I have come to the conclusion that all the Skoda dealers around here dont deserve my custom anyway.

Just to note I have the 4x4 110bhp and I can get 50-55 mpg on longer trips no bother and about 40 on shorter trips. I believe the system is 96% front wheel drive anyway and rears kick in when required so I don't think the fuel economy suffers that much, I'd personally sacrifice some mpg for the winter capability.

If I was buying one, which Im not, that would be my philosophy.
