remapped car insurance

I'm sure there must be loads of remapped cars out there where the insurance company have not been notified and out of interest how could they ever find out?

Admiral covered ours, PD140 increased to 170, via Shark. Cost extra £66 (160 excess) and cost nowt for changing to winter wheels

BTW, no joy with adrian flux, higher premium and 300 excess :wonder:

Yes you're right, and they all run the risk of not being covered in the event of a crash. If insurers want to, they can easily find if a car has been remapped, regardless of what you may read.

Graham Sykes also really good, as are Bell Direct.

It's becoming more and more common now, and many of the main stream insurers and even the comparison sites let you plug in your modifications online for a quote rather than having to speak to someone for a 'specialised' price.

As remapping becomes more common I wonder what the insurance situation is if you buy a used car, remapped by a previous owner, without knowing its been remapped?

My old Xsara HDi for example had been remapped by me, was part-exed for my current Octy, then sold on by the Skoda dealer to another dealer, who then sold it to yet another dealer, who presumably eventually sold it to a private buyer who I guess is now driving it around with no idea it had been remapped.

  • 4 weeks later...

I'm with Skoda Insurance and they wanted an extra £110 or so for a Shark Stage one.

This tips the balance away from a remap for me for now.

Will wait for renewal time & shop around.

From what I've been reading, insurance premiums are rising steeply to cover the companies' costs and I'm guessing charging more for remapped cars will also result.

Pity, especially with a very tempting Shark Group Buy on at the moment!

I believe that the insurance company will charge you the extra insurance that you should have paid for the mod before they pay out for any claim, and if you don't pay your insurance may be delcared invalid. So if you have been with them for 5 years and the extra cost of insurance for the remapping would have been £100 per year then yiou will need to pay them £500. I have seen this applied with other mods. Not sure what happens if they would not have insured a remapped car though.

Admiral will cover remapped vehicles.

I'd just like to point out that admiral do NOT cover remapped cars, as i've had a long and lengthy conversation with them / their underwriters. They cover "chipped" cars only, and acc to the bloke I spoke to, a remap would invalidate the policy. This was the same info that I got from all the companies under the admiral group (elephant / bell)

I sold my previous cars with remaps, I advised the Private purchasor and the Dealer of both cars that they had been remapped and the receipt for the remap was also in the documentation. Providing the next person in the chain doesn't throw away the receipts/service history then the next buyer should be aware when checking the paperwork.

I renewed my insurance with Admiral last week and they covered my ECU Remap.

My renewal with admiral was also cheaper than last years policy although it wasn't modded last year and with all my mods only put my policy up by £70 B)

Admiral have just covered my 1.8TSI with Shark Stage 1. They have 3 levels of cover:- 0-10% power increase, 11-25% power increase and 26% and above.

As I said in the other thread - Admiral were also more than prepared to cover my "potential remap" when I called them up a few months ago.

I think the person who was told no needs to give them a call back - that's three known people who were told no problem and I've heard of others.

I would appear to be wrong, I called them again on your advice, and lo and behold the bloke today said they do cover remaps, they put it down as being "chipped" but then they make a note that it is remapped, and they confirmed this with the underwriters. Clearly the first person I spoke to at admiral knew nothing !

Edited for spelling.

Excellent news - you'll be able to get the map done now :)

i was told an interesting story the other day by someone in the motor trade whom i hold in high regards. He said that in the near future your car will be checked for re-mapping/chipping at MOT time and if the mapping causes an emission rise into the next tax bracket you will be billed for the back-dated tax from when you took ownership of the car and your insurance co will be informed!this could also hurt company car drivers whos payments are directly linked to the co2 output of the car.Wouldnt put it past the government to give this a go!.

Skoda Insurance...........tdi remapped

Likewise, when I asked them they said for an economy map (with no BHP increase) there is no charge, a 10% increase will incure a 10% premium increase etc.

Very easily if they wanted to, as can a dealer.

Insurance companies do not like paying out and if there is a way out they will look for it.

More so in total loss situations as the pay-out can be quite substantial.

It really wouldn't take much for the "wreck" to be taken by the insurance company to Skoda and to ask for the ECU to be scanned.

Any remap will be found.

Even if you have one of the systems where the remap can be installed and removed at will, the ECU will still show that it has been "played with" by the customer.

Non-disclosure could mean that the insurance company decide not to pay out on the damage to your own vehicle.

They cannot dismiss their third-party requirements, so if you hit somebody they get repaired.

However you could end up with your own vehicle written off and no money from the insurance company.

Really not worth the risk.

Just renewing my insurance in Ireland and I was a bit worried about a new tow bar never mind a remap. The company website gave options to come clean about maps and other modifications such as "Rally/spot lamps" and non-standard air filters.

Out of curiosity, (car's unmodified), I played around with different check boxes.

I discovered that fitting a set of spot lights would cost me an extra €125, same again for the air filter.

For remaps, I selected the lowest option: a 10% increase in BHP for a remap and computer says no. :'(

So as far as I can see FBD, one of the biggest in Ireland, don't do remaps.

However, I rang up and I was informed that my towbar and occasional towing of livestock trailers was just fine! Go figure.

I'd like to map my car to suit the towing and release a little extra from the engine. But I wouldn't take the risk of not owning up and if they would cover the modification I'm guessing from the reaction to a non-standard air filter the cost would be prohibitive.
