VRS Burning oil

Featured Replies

Lets hope once cracked open it will not be the same.

It should be fixed and it can be better than others that have not been cracked open.

'Tell' Skoda UK now and tell them to confirm in writing,

If they are choosing to do Remedial work on your engine now,

you expect a full 3 year warranty on the engine from the time the work is done.

Or to just get on and Get the New engine ordered and delivered, & it will still require a 3 year warranty on the engine.

They are having a laugh. Just demand a properly suitable for purpose vehicle that is not going to cost you when you sell it more than anyone elses.

Well finally our car is going in for the new rings treatment! I am not happy about this as any engine once cracked open is never the same!

However, after speaking to SUK they assure me that if the problem persists a new engine or car is the next step in the process.

I will post again when it comes back from surgery.....

No no no.They already know piston rings are not the solution, why did they still want to do it?

Hi! You may have already seen this but if not please take a look at posts #34 and #35 at VRS oil consumption solved now?

Just topped up again, thats now nearly 1 litre in 1958 miles, which is well below the handbook's 0.5/1000km (600miles)- makes me think it's not that bad really if that's what they consider normal.

OK, Fabia is in the dealers, I spoke about the breather system and I also mentioned the thoughts on the issue not being due to rings!

The reply I got was this, "Skoda UK have a procedure for this issue, it starts with an oil change, the replacement oil is weighed in to the engine, then a 240 km drive is under taken (probably at my expense as the car has a full tank of petrol!) Any way, after the journey the oil is dropped again and weighed, if the weight is below what VAG state then the rings will be replaced, if after that oil consumption is still high the engine will be replaced.

I have also spoken with the sales side of the dealership and if I am not happy at any time they will do there best to swap me into a new car or similar age similar mileage for a similar price.

I will go along with the procedure VAG have and we will see how things go, the service manager told me from all the cars they have sold only one has had rings replaced and it was a success.

I will keep you informed of what happens this week. On the whole service is very good and I am happy'ish so far.

Slightly off topic here, but wouldn't it be a good idea to merge all the various oil usage threads?

Evidence ? Didn't realise I was in court ?

Thought this was a forum which has opinions from everyone.

I've used Mobil oil for 25 years and always will.

It meets & exceeds the required spec.

If you want to use Castrol, go ahead. Skoda 'recommend' it because they're getting paid to do so.

I did not want to seem unfriendly, but you made a clear statement which was not an opinion the way you worded it.

So have you compared Mobil with other oils that gave you worse oil consumption; Castrol Edge 5w 30 for instance?

I would be genuinely interested to hear how you came to the conclusion that Mobil 1 ESP oils is the best because I would be pleased to use it; especially if it was cheaper.

Regards

Tony

Do you guys really think that all these different oil companies make their own variant of particular grade oils? I have a neighbour who works in the oil/fuel industry and basically there are only a few manufacturers of oils, therefore it would be a good possibility that mobil and castrol are one in the same but use different packaging!

I have used castrol in a Passat, I also used Rock Oil, Q8, Shell and possibly mobil too as the car used half a litre every 7,000 miles. In the Fabia I have used Rock oil and I have also used what ever free oil the dealer has given to me from a 210 litre drum in their work shop. I use this exact same oil in the diesel Yeti I have too.

I don't think the oil influences the how much disappears and how quickly it disappears.

I changed from 5w/30 to 5w/40 (both Castrol Edge) and noticed an immediate improvement in oil consumption. I keep a log of oil consumption/mileage and measure quantity used when topping up. Recently had a service and dealer used Quantum 5w/40. This seems to give the lowest consumption so far - 3000 miles since service and oil level still right at the top of the hatched area on the dipstick. Oil consumption before service was at a constant rate, but acceptable. Bought some Quantum for topping up but not had to use it yet. I would recommend giving 502 spec 5w/40 a go if you're on fixed servicing.

You are recommending the 5w/40 but shouldn't it be the 30? Is the 30/40 a temperature thingy so what you are saying seems to make sense as it would provide a higher temp threshold ?

Skoda specify VW 502 spec oil for petrol Fabias on fixed service intervals, so any grade that meets 502 spec is ok. Off the top of my head I think you can get 0W/30, 0W/40, 5W/30 and 5W/40 all to 502 spec. So personal preference I suppose. My oil consumption seems less with the slightly more viscous (at high temp.) 5W/40.

I have done just over of 5000 miles since 1st May and just recently had to start topping off with oil. The car had 9056 miles on her and now its sitting at 14228. Looking through this thread It doesn't seam not to bad but just wondering if this is the start of things to come...

OK, car has been in the dealer for the two weeks I have been away, it is agreed that oil consumption is excessive BUT I have been presented with a further dilemma.

It is clear that oil usage is high, changing the rings was the norm in the past however this is not the case anymore, as stated above in this thread a modified oil breather system is VAG's new fix for the problem and is the recommendation by SUK to the dealer who has been authorised to do the work. BUT this is the twist, the dealer has told me that this fix does not work either and they will not do the work as in their opinion it is a waste of time! I have been assured that a new fix is about to be released (before Christmas anyway) in the meantime I will be given free oil until the fix is released, I have also been told the catalytic converter will be changed when the modification work is carried out as the oil will have damaged the cat.

So to cut a long story short, I can collect my car on tuesday which I will do, I will collect my free oil and see how things go leading up to Christmas, if the fix is no good I will reject the car in the new year.

When going and performing correctly the engine is fantastic.

Just done 2 tank full of Momentum.

Some at 42-61 mpg & some at 25-32 mpg.

so 600 miles of fun. & Mobile 1 from 88 Degrees celcius to 98 celcius & zero oil used.

10,500 miles since engine re-build. 14500 on the clock.

I am now in discussion on how we proceed from here, I can trade the car in for todays value and put more money in for a new one, that is the offer on the table.

I was of the impression if I rejected the car I would get the purchase value back or am I incorrect?

Or should I push for a new engine?

if you reject it, you should get the purchess price back as its "not fit for purpose" ....

if you reject it, you should get the purchess price back as its "not fit for purpose" ....

Skoda refused to give me the full purchase price as my car had 8000miles on it so depends on age to whether they will give full refund

Car has 4000 miles on and I did make a point of oil use three months after buying the car, it was Skoda who said keep the car to see if it gets better when it runs in.

So by complying to the suggestion I am now out of pocket. I do have gap insurance, that might work in my favour.

Only other outcome is to insist on a new engine and keep the car.

I had issues with mine from 700miles due oil usage, i told the dealer the was to have a new engine which it had which solved that particular problem with the car and i was going to leave at that however with persisting issues of all nature i had no choice but to reject the car due to it being so unreliable and me not being able to use it with trust. However škoda uk believe even though i had 8000miles of troublesome motoring that i should still take the hit of depreciation. TOTALLY WRONG if you ask me. So now i have the octavia which was the only option they really left me with although even this they led me along with a nice cheque then day before i got my car refused it, so all i say is good luck be persistent, demand a new engine (it solved my oil consumption issue).

I have now booked the car back in for the revised breather pipe, crank case breather and other bits of pipe fix. (not convinced personally) however if this does not work then the next step is a new short engine, so I think we have light at the end of the tunnel (hope it is not a train coming down the track!)

Just to confirm that the Dealer has been exceptional in the way they have dealt with my woes. SUK could do better

Just finished sorting out mine to be take back to the dealer where I bought it for oil usage investigation. By my conservative readings it has used 1.5l in just shy of 1300km which is around 1.2l/1000km so a fair chunk uotside of the limits. It has already had the rings replaced when the previous owner had it which obviously didnt fix the problem. Not sure if it got the revised breather system, but has been leaving hefty blue smoke clouds behind after coasting with no throttle on. Will keep pressure on for new engine if I can. Interstingly I was informed by my local Skoda dealer that they cannot order just the short block alone for the TSI so it would be a new engine or nothing.

On a side note, mine has also been making nasty clattering noises which I think are related to the oil issue but not sure. Only happens when coming back on the throttle (and as such with oil tin the combusiotn chamber) and lasts a few seconds till the engine clears and then norml running and power resumes. Seems to be getting worse too which is not a good sign, so just as well it is being collected on a flatbed. Fingers crossed for a fix!

Sounds like pinking from the sudden oil consumption (its probably sitting in the intercooler, then being sucked through when you open the throttle again). Pinking is bad on any forced induction engine - doesn't take long before its bye-bye piston (been there..).
