VRS Burning oil

Featured Replies

I dont have a Fabia VRS but a 1.8TSi Octavia which is using around 1 litre every 6,000 miles.

I cant see why these modern petrol engines are using so much oil,

It seems tht things have come full circle over the last 15 years.

Go back 20 years.

Petrol cars used to burn very little oil and had a service every 6,000 miles.

Diesels use to burn loads of oil and got serviced every 4,500 miles.

Now a lot of petrol engines use a fair bit of oil and the Diesels use very little.

Both types can go 15-20,000 without a service.

But now as well as 20 years ago the manufacturers still say oil consumotion of 1lt per 1000 is ok.

  • Its never a good feeling when you plunge your dipstick into the hole and it comes out dry...... I can understand the frustrations of thos owners with an issue. When you bag yourself a new/low milea

  • I will ask about the oil breather system before they do any major mechanical works, I will post tomorrow afternoon when I am back from the dealer.

  • Actually there was an amusing (and shocking for me!) confession some time ago when I was repeatedly asking how come you post so much cr@p about the vRS if you've never had one? At least us, we're shar

mine using 2.25L/700 miles after new piston rings.

what?!?! mine was serviced at 20,000 miles (with syntium 5000xs) and has used NO OIL (I checked it today) at 25,500 miles....

I would accept maybe a litre in 500 miles.... no more. (I know the VW quoted acceptable levels) but honestly 2.25l/700 miles is a broken engine...

Used to be 1.5L/1000 miles before the piston rings replaced. Must be the dealer poor workmanship.

Sorry to see you guys having so much trouble, I must be lucky as my new VRS has hardly used any oil after 4,500 mls. Keep my fingers crossed Jamie hopefully they will sort it out mate.

i think its rubbish how some dont use oil and some use loads. instead of using my trip counter for miles in tank fill ups, i use it to work out how many miles ive done in between top ups.

That's what I use my 2nd setting for

Hi All

I've been using quite alot of oil but wasn't that concerned after seeing alot of similar stories on here. Last week I was trundling along at 40 ish, possibly in 7th gear and gently accelerated, I noticed in the rear view mirror a cloud exiting the rear of the car which is a worry. I'm on 18k miles and have the 2 year service due in May. Just not sure whether I should be reporting this behaviour ahead of the service.

I don't think I can face going through engine problems with the garage :-(

what sort of cloud? normal steam when cold, is of course normal..

they also tend to smoke a bit (you can even get soot deposits all over the back of the car) , I cant remember my tailpipes looking chrome! lol..

mine gives the odd puff of black smoke when hooning around... and mine doesn't use any oil... these engines just run a bit rich.

blue smoke? then seriously worry.

White smoke is bad too!

had to add oil today :( 508 miles from top of dip stick to the bottom of the cross hatched mark so half litre give or take, if it carries on lyk that its 1ml a mile :(

400 miles from top of dip stick to the bottom of the orange plastic . Will go to the dealer tomorrow.

3.5L/400 Miles??? You sure there ain't a hole down there? That's not typical at all...

3.75 L /1120 miles after piston rings replaced.

Just been told by dealer, skoda uk won't do any test until another 5000 miles .What a joke.

If you read in the handbook i think it states 0.5litres for every 1000km

Hi James, as the blokes are saying this is probably a bedding in issue to a large extent. If your wife has already done 1750 miles, and hasn't revved it past 3,000 rpm or has done so only rarely, and has driven it on mostly short trips, then the cylinder bores are probably already glazed and it may never run in. The problem is that a lacquer builds up on the cylinder bores, pistons and rings. This cannot be removed without a strip down. Also the cylinder bores become shiny glazed and cannot hold onto the oil film properly. The pistons and rings can't conform to each others shape so quite a bit of oil is being consumed. The same can happen if you drive it too hard in the first 1000 miles too. So going slowly or going too hard are two extremes to avoid to begin with.

If you drive it quite hard for a few trips this will help but let it warm up first before taking the revs up. You may just be lucky and recover the situation enough for it to be ok, but it probably won't be the best. I wouldn't worry about the blue smoke at the moment. Some of that smoke is from unburned oil in the catalytic converter and exhaust. But some of it will be from unburned oil in the cylinders which builds up if it's driven slowly all the time when the engine doesn't reach full working temperature. I'm afraid the Vrs is one of those cars that MUST be driven. You can't baby them around too much from new, but why would you anyway...they are such fun! Good luck to you both. emoticon-0144-nod.gif

I would certainly look at taking this advice.. couldn't have put it any better.. (do you want a job?)

Yep I agree with you 100%

That's good for me then just done 2000 miles and used 1lt of oil, and I was worried I was using too much.

Same here lol

Well, 0.5 litres per 1000 km is way more then any car I've ever owned in my life.

My vRS haven't been that tirsty, but I've never experienced something that drinks these amounts of oil!

Oh if its burning oil youll know about it ha, mine puffed smoke out of exhaust and burnt 750ml in 300mile

i first started to worry when mine came with a litre of oil ready and waiting in the boot. my old mk1 never came with any.

to be fair ive used that and the garage put some in when i went there after getting low oil light on ( after about 3000 miles id put 300 ml give or take, used the rest of the bottle and they filled it up too ) so prolly used 2 - 3 ltrs in all. i never did ask how much theyd put in as i was more concerned id fooked something. so i guess im less than average but still WAY more than my old vrs did in over 70000 miles, in fact apart from its services i NEVER used any extra oil in it

it wouldnt be so bad if the oil wasnt so bloody expensive i just hope it isnt a sign of things to come, nearly 6k now so maybe its sealed/bedded in, i do hope so
