VRS Burning oil

Featured Replies

Sounds like pinking from the sudden oil consumption (its probably sitting in the intercooler, then being sucked through when you open the throttle again). Pinking is bad on any forced induction engine - doesn't take long before its bye-bye piston (been there..).

Yeh thats the impression I got from the noise and coinciding loss of power. I did think initially it might be timing chain but it makes no noise at startup and a rattle shouldnt affect the power like that. I just hope they confirm its using oil, and that its already had the new oil recirc solution done so new engine time. Either that or when they are driving it to test for consumption it goes BANG! Then its definitely new engine time :giggle::rock:

  • I will ask about the oil breather system before they do any major mechanical works, I will post tomorrow afternoon when I am back from the dealer.

Blue is bad.

Have any of you looked at the mobil 1 newlife?

It's slightly thicker when up to temp, so as long as it meets spec, might not p*ss out as much.

Considered it but I wasn't sure if it would be much benefit to the engine itself. If the usage problem gets fixed 5w30 would be better IMO, although you may be right with regards pouring oil out the exhaust with the thicker oil. I will consider the different oil approach if the worst happens and I get no fix.

I am with you Paddy, if the car keeps loosing oil the 10/50 is the way forward

I'm sure someone is running the thicker oil and the oil issue has gone ?

This is getting silly now.

I use 10w/50 classic oil in old RR V8 engines that run on LPG,

i need twin battery power to start them in the winter.

The car is under warrant. 5w/30 fully synthetic is correct for UK weather and temp ranges.

The engine does not need to burn oil.

or throw oil out an exhaust or any other terms people care to use JMO obviously

It is not a Worn Piston ring thing or bore on a vRS.

Just best get Skoda UK to get it fixed.

Many were correctly repaired after just 4000 miles or so.

Many of them were early demonstrators at Dealerships that got sold to customers.

They are great after new rings, if they need new rings.

Push for that, then if faulty get a new engine. Its your right to a 'vehicle fit for purpose'.

Skoda must know what component supplier that supplied poorly manufactured or tolerance parts.

They know the engine number range.

Consumer rights

& get legal advice if they keep messing.

Hi George,

Mine has already had the rings replaced, when it was with the previous owner. Still drinking the gold stuff like no tomorrow, but obviously they have to "confirm" this first again before they look at doing anything else. I just hope they don't try tell me its fine. Not sure if the oil recirculation mod will fix mine, it seems pretty bad. With regards oil, I would never put any thicker than 0w40 in it anyway dont worry :whew:

Paddy, if more work is carried out I was advised to ask for the CAT to be replaced also as this could possibly be damaged also.

My oil consumption is bang on the handbook limit (500ml per 1000km) if averaged over the first 9,000 miles. I'm therefore reluctant to go through the oil consumption test only to be told I don't qualify for a fix. I'm interested in the oil breather modification but have been told that the consumption test has to be carried out first and I would have no say which fix, if any, is applied. I would be happy to buy the modified pipe work and fit myself but that would have implications on the warranty. Therefore I will carefully monitor oil usage over the next six months to see if it has improved. By then there should be more evidence if the latest oil breather fix is actually a solution.

Are you saying that in 9,000 miles you have put in 7.2 litres of Oil.?

*That is like the Engine Oil Capacity of 3.6 litre having been changed twice already*

Has it had its 1 year or 10,000 miles service yet?

How much oil has gone in to top up since then?

(i would be tempted to change the filter & keep the nice oil you have paid for already,

semi serious there)

I would get it checked out.

Get Skoda to pay for the New Oil & Filter & get the 'Consumption test' done, if you are paying out already for 7 litres in 9,000 miles IMHO

That 500 ml per 1000km (620 miles or so) is something said in the book up to 5000km (3100 miles)

A bit much if it went on the same for another 10,000 km at the same Oil Consumption.

george

Yes, 7 litres in 9,000 miles. Can't say yet if consumption is reducing as I haven't so far kept records of the dates of top ups. It had its 10,000 mile service two weeks ago. Oil fill was just over maximum (when hot) after the service. Already dropping. I'm now going to keep accurate figures. The last thing I want is piston ring replacement. My engine number is after the batch originally implicated. It would be good to think that a relatively simple oil breather modification is the solution, but who knows?

Skoda UK have offered to pay for my oil.

Keep pushing with your dealer as paying for your oil is ok and if you are happy then SUK have got away without repairing another oil user.

SUK will authorise your dealer to give you oil for free if the issue is confirmed on your car.

Mine went back in last weekend, it is confirmed that a new breather system is to be fitted, I got a phone call on Wednesday to collect the car as the breather replacement is on back order with no confirmed date of arrival.......

I was given a 1.2 turbo dsg fabia as a courtesy car, it was the base model with plastic wheel trims, no glove box lid and no paint on the door handles, but I must say for 1.2 it was very nippy. (didn't use any oil either...)

I will make the call in the morning, thanks for the info.

Have you noticed a difference in oil usage or is it too early to notice?

New breathwer system fitted yesterday and they also replaced the contaminate manifold.

Too early to notice but should have a better view next week...

Only got it back Monday night and have done about 150 miles since... Will keep you informed though. :)

Do you know what level of oil consumption in the oil consumption test has to be reached before they will consider the breather replacement? (either in terms of oil weight loss or litres per 1000km). My oil consumption is high but marginal in terms of handbook limits. SUK have already agreed to giving me free oil without conducting any tests.

My car used 5 litres of oil to cover 4,000 miles, if you insist the dealer will carry out a consumption test where they weigh the oil, drive the car for 200 miles and then weigh the oil, mine used 124 grams on the drive out, I was offered free oil after that and my reply was "I want new car not free oil"

A rant at SUK worked wonders too, just don't let it lie, good luck.

Thanks for the information. It will be very interesting to see if the oil breather modification makes a difference once you've had it done. Let us know in a month or two's time!

Car has 4000 miles on and I did make a point of oil use three months after buying the car, it was Skoda who said keep the car to see if it gets better when it runs in.

So by complying to the suggestion I am now out of pocket. I do have gap insurance, that might work in my favour.

Might want to have a read of this on rejecting & refunds: http://www.oft.gov.uk/business-advice/treating-customers-fairly/sogahome/sogaexplained. Partial refund if you've had the benefit of use of the item for some time before it went faulty, full refund if it was iffy from the off, normally.
