Which is the best Bond film?

Hi folks,

Well as an avid Bond fan I had this debate whilst working the night shift this weekend.

I have my personal favourite. My decision is based mainly on the Bond who I grew up with and was my hero during the era of my youth during the 1980's.

That is Sir Roger Moore.

My favorite outing with Sir Rog has got to be: The Man With the Golden Gun.

Also featuring Christopher Lee and Britt Ekland. Talent and Talent.

There you go. Thats my choice.

And dare I say it, even though I'm an avid Bond fan, I do find the latest fella, Mr Craig, not too bad at the role. B)

Craig is creating a new era of talent and style for bond. Which I think it needed.

That being said... Live and Let Die for Mr Moore.

While GoldenEye still is one of the greatest Films period. For me anyway.

but with the pure velocity of Peter Sellers, the orignal Casino Royal. (unofficial bond #1)

Daniel Craig in 'Casino Royale' for me

For, amongst other things, the Aston Martin roll, and possibly one of the best ever Bond one-liners,

"Now the whole world's gonna know that you died scratching my balls!"

The 'definitive' portrayal of Bond as Ian Fleming intended him to be, has got to be Sir Sean Connery without a doubt. His laconic delivery, excellent one liners, unconscious style, insouciance and a superb sense of timing are the stuff of legend, for a whole generation or two of movie goers. I have been a Bond fan for absolutely ages and I would venture that Pierce Brosnan comes a very close second to Sean Connery in this race. The others are merely also rans in this particular context.

Incidentally the 'launch pad' for Sir Roger Moore to the 'Bond' persona was undoubtedly the 'Saint' series and so indeed was 'Remington Steele' for Pierce Brosnan.I have collected every single novel of Ian Fleming's including the rare ' Thrilling Cities' set, about his travels and experiences from which he has drawn a lot of inspiration for the Bond novels. I ' ve also been able to collect every single James Bond film and a great deal of other memorabilia including the scale models of his various cars. Excellent stuff indeed!

OHMSS - On Her Majesty's Secret Service.

Best film, best sound track.

Best defines Bond's reason why he is what he is.

Recent Casino Royale is virtual a remake of this film and Fleming book and a good job too, Quantum of Solice good but a bit too complex for most.

Apparently Skyfall not to be part 3 of Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace now.

Franchise a bit tired after 50 years and after Bourne films and with Albert gone and Barbara in charge.

Is Octypussy the worst one?

I find Roger Moore way too flippant for the role of JB. Also not sexy enough.

I do like Sean Connery, but find him a little too brooding. Pierce Brosban, for me, was the ultimate Bond. Just the right amount of one-liners, misogyny, charm and slapstick (I.e. smashing a cello over someone's head in Tomorrow Never Dies and taking out the dude on the boat with a towel in Goldeneye).

Timothy Dalton was also pretty good!

OHMSS is my personal favourite - only downside is George Lazenby - upside is Diana Rigg :p .

I watched From Russia With Love recently on ITV4 - objectively it's probably the best Bond film - before the gadgetry took over.

I also like Live And Let Die (best theme - an epic from Macca) and The Man With The Golden Gun (anything with Christopher Lee in it has to be worth watching).

My personal favourite is Licence to Kill with Timothy Dalton. It may not be very true to the literary origins of Bond, but I like it as a stand alone film rather than part of the wider Bond franchise, and despite some rather cheesy action scenes I like the overall theme of vengeance in a very personal sense. Plus it has Carey Lowell looking tremendous

It was also a refreshing change to have Dalton as Bond after the increasingly cringe-worthy antics of the geriatric Roger Moore. It was a shame he only made two films as it was rather good to have an actor attempt to bring a more serious and darker side to the character.

That said, as an out and out action film, Casino Royale was a splendid effort and it was great to see the Bond franchise re-invigorated and without an over-reliance on cheesy gags and improbable gadgets. The opening sequence has some truly impressive stunt work and set the scene for the remainder of the film very nicely.

I grew up with Sean Connery & Roger Moore and much prefer the older James Bond films to the newer ones although Pierce Brosnan does seem to carry off the 'I love myself' part to James Bond very well.

I don't have a favourite film

Pretty much like them all, however my least favourites are:

Moonraker - Bond in space fights Frankensteins monster!

Die Another Day - Surfing Bond drives an invisible car and meets Basil Fawlty on the Underground.

OHMSS - Who loves ya Bondy? Not me I'm going to poison the world!

Forgot to give Casino Royale (the Daniel Craig one) an honourable mention - the Richard gave me a loan of the DVD - highly enjoyable entertainment.

Daniel Craig's the first Bond since Sean Connery that actually looks as if he can handle himself.

I've never watched any of the films with Brosnan or Dalton - and never will.

I do like the modern ones with Daniel Craig in but Sean Connery in films like gold finger just sum up bond so well. I don't mind the early Rodger Moore films but some of the later ones just got so cheesy and seeing him trying to pull girls young enough to be his daughter was just cringe worthy. I did always like the way Timothy Dalton played Bond, was a very dark character. Pierce Brosnon was really let down by some terrible scripts cos he was a very good bond too. Goldeneye was great but die another day, invisible car, give us a break!

For me the latest films with Daniel Craig as Bond are really good as they're more gripping & I suppose realistic for the day. Sean Connery though is the iconic gentleman spy. Goldfinger stands out as being a memorable film for me.

We couldn't wait for Pierce Brosnan to play Bond but I think the films could have been better. B)

Agree on the Moore films. In the later ones some of the girls were probably young enough to be his granddaughter :giggle: .

Don't have a particular favourite, I liked them all. However, I do have one gripe. Having read all the books long before I ever saw a film, the plot of The Spy Who Loved Me was nothing to do with the book, the only similarities to the book were James was in it, and the title. Hugely disappointing. Still, the film was ok though.
