Anyway to stop AC coming on AUTO setting?

Featured Replies

Hi all, just a minor niggle... Depending on the temperature/humidity, first drive in the morning I sometimes select max demist, then when it clears I press AUTO, usually set the temperature around 22 degrees and the Climatronic stupidly assumes I want AC on?

WHY? I know mainland Europe suffers much colder temperatures on average during winter, but do they seriously think I want AC to come on even though I've set it 15-20 degrees higher than the outside temperature? 'It's frickin' freezing in here, Mr Bigglesworth'

Manual doesn't seem to say much other than individual button settings:

Description of Climatronic system

The cooling operates only if the following conditions are met:

• engine running,

• outside temperature above approx. +2 °C, WTF? 2°C

• switched on.

I know it's easy to turn the AC off but should I really have to press 2 buttons when changing settings? Just wondered if there's a way to disable the AC until I want it...?

I often use the two rectangular buttons in the centre under the radio instead, one for face level, one for body level. That cuts out the auto, and feels warmer on these cold days. Also you can choose to use both levels or only one, say have warm legs but cooler face!

I am not sure about Facelifts but on my climatronic( normal M2) you can have auto and econ button pressed, ( no ac) then you push the screen symbol , ( rapid ac air to the screen) instead of then pushing auto on again, ( in which case econ will be cancelled) I repress the screen symbol and it reverts to its previous state , IE Auto with econ on, maybe yours will do the same

No econ button on mine (had it on my old Octy 1)...

On my pre FL Octy with dual zone i have mine on Econ with the two buttons on the right side out of the four under the stereo on all the time never 100% known how to use the system properly seems ok and does'nt steam up too bad if need quick windscreen clear i press the one above the heated rear window then after few mins switch that off and goes back to my normal settings , is my aircon off unless the auto button is on

the windscreen clearing buttons seem independent of the general system. Rear is just the usual electric wires heater, front a good blast of air, probably a/c.

But surely there is still an econ directly under the auto button? On mine the auto is the "top half" of the control knob and econ the lower half.

Same here, but is the aircon off in an economy mode or running as the button says economically, then if auto is pressed does this switch aircon on , and i just presumed that when i press the windscreen clear button it swiches aircon on automatically (the button on the rotating dial with rear window switch ) Sorry to sound thick but find this Aircon system complicated compared to other cars owned Just didn't want to have aircon all the time using extra fuel

As I said, there is no ECON button:

OctyClimatronic.jpg

This isn't mine, but is the same Climatronic unit as mine (Nov 2011 build).

Same as mine but I never put it on Auto and if it comes on then I just hit either the + or - button to get rid of it.

As I remember if I put mine on max it also turns the a/c on and blasts the fan at full speed but none of the direction buttons light up so I wonder where it's all going :D

I just use the + and - buttons and if I do whack it up to full fan speed I often want the a/c on to help clear the windscreen.

Not related but might be of interest, I've found leaving the temp dial at 24 works best for quick demisting and also turning off the screen button when parking up the night before helps to prevent the front window fogging up as soon as I start the car on a bitterly cold morning.

The aircon is off in economy mode

That's what I've been doing, just wondered if there was a way to stop it...

To the op, have you tried pressing the max symbol again to turn it off rather than pressing auto, by the way the aircon will only send cool air to the cabin if it is sett at a low temp, if you have at at 22 all it will do is de- humidify the air, even when it is cold you should run your air con for 20 mins a month, this stops the seals going and gas escaping, any fuel you may have saved is negated by a re-gas. Also the cabin is clear of moisture and you do not have to turn the blower up to demist

Hmmm, I'll try that, thanks for the info :)

Two lights on the Auto? What do they mean?

(I have a pre-FL)

Also the middle button looks like a picture of a butt!

AUTO left = Low setting, AUTO right = High setting...

The middle SET button is for resetting the TPM ie when you've just pumped the tyres up - it monitors deviation from the last setting, doesn't display the pressure (which I'd prefer :dull: )

Rainbow, we have the same button ( Tyre pressure sensor)in our cars, or have you never sett yours :dull:

I think the general idea is that in winter you still need the AC running as it will demist the car faster, as the air has been cooled and dried by the AC, and then passed through the heater matrix to warm it up.

If you have a temperature set that it is higher than the ambient outside air temperature I am sure I have read somewhere that the AC is only running at about 10% to dry the air to help demisting.

I leave mine on AUTO 90% of the time and seems to work for me, with the temperature set at 21 or 22.

Mine is a pre FL though, so no doubt the system behaves completely differently.

Right, just been out for a drive cos I've not been out in it today, and yes, pressing the MAX button again makes the system go back to what it was before... All good!

I will also in future make sure it runs once a week or so for a few mins...

Cheers all! :D

Glad you are a happy bunny

Not a button I've got on the Elegance :-(

As an aside though: I have been told there is a company that does, er, 'alternative' labels for the switches....."rockets" "oil" "smoke" etc :giggle: :giggle: :giggle:

Just leave it in auto, AC in winter is a good thing as its not all about cooling. AC when its cold or damp outside removes moisture from the air, resulting in windows demisting faster and not having a tendency to mist up when its damp and a lot of people in the car.

Ooooo. Ok. Not trying to be thick (comes naturally sometimes): I thought Auto was an "on/off" feature. When on it uses the A/C to keep the temperature as close to your desired setting as possible (i.e. adjusts the temperature and air-flow as required.) When off, no 'active adjustment' takes place. (At least that's what I understand from the Pre-FL and my Flawed Focus handbook)

What's the difference between Low and High on the FL? :S

If I had the TPM I'd want the pressure displayed too. ;)

Exactly!

What's the difference between Low and High on the FL? :S

Quote from the manual:

If the warning light in the top right corner of the 'AUTO' button lights up, the

Climatronic operates in “HIGH†mode. The “HIGH†mode is the standard setting of

the Climatronic.

When pressing again the button , the Climatronic changes into the “LOWâ€

mode and the warning light in the top left corner lights up. The Climatronic uses only

in this mode the lower blower speed. However taking into account the noise level,

this is more comfortable, yet be aware that the effectiveness of the air conditioning

system is reduced particularly if the vehicle is fully occupied.
