Side Bulbs Disaster....

Featured Replies

Hi Guys

I purchased some LED side bulbs (501 size) for my car (paid bit more, £13.00 for pair, as I thought these will last longer) and fitted those Thursday last week. The manufacturer said the bulbs should last more than 50,000 hours but they didn't. Had to replace one of them today. I managed to get out the bulb holder quite easilly and within few mins but when I looked at it there was no bulb...!!!! The bulb stayed inside the headlight unit and when I tried to take it out it fall inside the headlight unit and I was unable to remove it. Luckily I have the Accident Repair Centre next to my office and one friend who works there and said he can remove it for me for no more than £20.00 (they had to take the bumper off, remove the headlight unit and shake it out). So my question is:

Does anyone know a very good, bright and well made LED bulbs that will last longer than 5 days...? I've already spent about £50.00 on the LEDs but none of these lasted as long as the manufacter said these should on the package....

Cheers, Matty

I didn't understand, are you referring to the headlights or the DRLs?

LED 501 size, side bulbs mate. I haven't got the DLRs.

Main issue with our cars is the CANBUS wiring.

Even if you get the canbus 'error free' bulbs ( I've spent god knows how many £s on them)

and they've failed or gone for the flashy disco effect.

Also, there is still a current present when the bulb is removed and they will flash or 'glow' even without being activated.

I've given up with LEDs. I do have 2 Philips W5W bulbs (@ £25 a pair) which have lasted for 3 years now.

My LEDs on my fabias no issues at all, drl py21 led no issues, reverse py21 no issues and all rest including internal and sidelights 501 no issues?

Lucky you Seb...:) I had to replace mine 3 times already. All LEDs 501 error free ones...

These are the ones I bought last week:

One of them lasted only for 5 days...

Not using LEDs but replaced my Fabia's sidelamp bulb and within days it blew again and when I removed the bulbholder the bulb wasn't in it. Fortunately I was able to grab it with long nose pliers BEFORE it fell into the headlamp! There was a slight clouding of the headlamp glass near where it had 'blown' though.

Been in the trade for years so I know I fitted it to the holder correctly - what did I do wrong?

Don't know what you did wrong but I've had absolutely no issues and been in a while you need the flat ones error free go to hq lighting on flebay

You probably pushed the led to far - it has happened to me once. I removed the led by using a magnet attached to a flexible metal cord my mechanic had. Then soon as it was in the socket I pulled with a set of pliers. It took me almost 30mins to get it right.

Hi Seb. Any chance for a link for some good quality ones which you have or recommend..? I really want to fit some good LEDs that will last for at least a year or maybe longer. Thanks in advance.

Matty

Wrong ones need the flat ones

That's good going ;) I'm sure the wiring on the Mk1 is different than the Mk2 though.

I sent a couple of emails to some LED suppliers and as soon as I mentioned the car was a new Skoda (VW group) they kind of ran for the hills :notme:
