Cigarette lighter /power socket

Featured Replies

Hello all

I have noticed the power to the cigarette lighter socket between the driver and passenger seats does not shut off when the engine is switched off , key pulled out and vehicle locked from the outside. Is this the way it should be? I dont recall the power staying on in my previously owned cars.Is it not a fire hazard ? I left my bluetooth speaker plugged in to charge the other day,and to tell you the truth I was a bit uneasy about it,should anything catch fire. What do you think?

It does remain live, it is designed to do so. The other socket, in the boot, is also live. No worries, situation normal, I have had this feature on other cars and it doesn't bother me at all.

Hi Oriki,

I recall all my previous cars were the same, you don't even need to put the key. In fact, it is very useful in case you connect a lighter torch to look under the bonnet without risk of getting the engine started or something else, or during a bulb change inside a dark garage without electric-shock risk :whew:

I should not reccomend to let anything plugged to the lighter, such as GPS or mobile charger, not only for the minimal risk of fire but also for possible theft if they note the connected wire :bandit:

Kind regards.

They are pretty much safe to leave connected, the lighter socket is only 10 amps max and most USB devices are only pulling 5v @ 500mA max.

The point Transfesa made about theft is more relevant if the device or cable is on show.

And another thumbs up from me.

And some of us don't have this "theft" problem.

I've had cars both ways; some stay live, others shut down. My Volvo V50 switched off the front one but left the one in the boot live.

I think I would prefer it to shut down TBH, but knowing how it is is enough to be able to manage it.

And another thumbs up from me.

That's why your insurance is cheaper!

No, Graham, don't stick your thumb or any digit in fact, into the cigarette socket.

Didn't your Mother warn you?

The electricity will make your hairs stand on end.

Thank you all for your opinions

Advantage of a live socket you can use a solar powered panel trickle

charger to keep battery topped up if car not used for extended periods.

A winter question now... how about getting 2 x front car seat heaters from Amazon, rated 10A each?

Is this guaranteed to blow fuses or damage the battery, or do you have to forget to plug them out when you stop the engine?

What for?

My car has heated seats anyway.

What about the problem of the attached item flattening the battery. I attached my Fridge in the boot but I doubt the battery will last long without the engine running. My fridge has a low voltage disconnect so it will turn off under a certain voltage but it would run the battery down to that voltage every night.

Any suggestions? Other than opening the boot and unpluging it every night.

Happy Days.

Wire them into a switched live in the fuse box.

Ignition off = device off.

Job done.

What is the maximum power for cigarette socket?

What is the maximum power for cigarette socket?

Currently, no idea on the max. I'll look into it.

The manual for my fridge says 46w at 12v. That's just under 4 amp.

Manual says 180w so 15 amp.

Happy Days.

I use 'em both for rapid charging of model battery packs , the chargers pull 5-6 amps each, I have installed a double socket in the arm rest box the supply to which is piggy backed off the central socket, no probs so far and is used regularly!

I just read in manual. The maximum power is 120 W.

Page 98? Mine says 180w

What??? No. The pages are 76-77. The manual is in english , from new. skoda-auto.

What can i say? Very interesting... What year is your manual?

That page came from a 2009 manual I had down loaded. I just checked the one from my vehicle and it says 120w, as you have said. Interesting, the differences?

Happy Days.
