M13 has just uploaded some footage of his crash 6 months ago, that he is still recovering from minus some body parts. :(

One suggestion he makes as to why/how it happened was he may have fallen asleep! :o :O :o

Not a nice thing to watch, but may be worth it in some way.

Blimey. Must of fallen to sleep surely. It was a straight road wasnt it. :s

Tbf, i dont find falling to sleep on the bike a problem, i can see how people do it in the car, but find the bike a lot more involving and engaging.

Although, tired is tired i guess. If you get to a certain stage some people can fall asleep standing up cant they

Isn't that what Goldwings are for?

Horlicks in the cupholder, stereo on easy listening, heated seat and grips on, set the nav and cruise control and off you go....wake me up when we're there.

Now theres a good point!

Now theres a good point!

Getting old now, so that seems appealing...!

My R1200RT was good for this, as you could heat the seat and grips, stick the music on, lift the electric screen to the top, set the ESA to comfort, set nav to "easy" and just eat the miles.

Then, when the boring motorway was over, lower the screen, set the ESA to sport/dynamic and attack the bends, fresh as a daisy.

If only it had been better built and designed....mine fell to bits.

What about lower the electronic stabilizers :D

The thought of a RT started to appeal to me intil I read the last sentance....seems beemers are not what they used to be?

They arent as good as they used to be no.

Dads had them got years n years, days the finish isnt as good as it used to be. Used to be able to ride through winter and just wash the salt off whenever, says the 2012 GS adventure hes got now isnt built as well as that, but still loves it

I keep finding myself looking at bikes on ebay/biketrader  Urgh, I use to think a 10 car garage would be fun, 10 bike garage? Even better, plus I could fit them in my current garage lol.

I never stop looking :(

I know what you mean. My 1150r was built like a brick sh1thoose with the quality being more car like. I was looking at getting a beemer again last year but decided to wait. I'm now thinking about a Triumph Explorer (not the xc) rather than a beemer as I quite like the look of it and by all accounts the engine is a peachy 136ps grunty bu88er. It's substancially cheaper than anything other than a bog standard gs which no one buys, the TE gs does have the semi active suspension but it's around 3 grand dearer than the Trumpet plus they're adding heated seat and grips together with panniers free on the TEX at the mo...... I'm going on a jolly day next month with the Triumph experience place by Malvern for a days gentle off roading on a Tiger 800 so that just might tip me over the edge and 'force' me to get another bike.

Yeah. Dad had a 1150GS in the early 2000's (cant remember exactly what year) which sadly got written off, so had a 2004GS after that and now a 2012 one. Had them all since brand new and reckons the 1150 was by far the most solid bike, although the twin cam engine in the 2012 is far better.

He test rode the new water cooled GS and loved that engine, but hated the clunky horrible gearbox.

Did have bmw's right back from the 80's n loved em then too.

Dont know much about the triumph tbf, but it does look a nice bike!

Apart from the expense of the BMW bikes I just cannot abide the engine.  OK I know they have refined it over the years but you still have a torque reaction when you blip the throttle and it still vibrates more than the VFR00 I had and my Triumph Tiger Explorer.  Plus the Tiger will rev for another 4000 revs and makes a fantastic sound.  To be fair to the BM they do handle very well and the Explorer is the same.  Great big wide bars make the cornering so easy and although it is hardly ever likely to go off road the extra height is great for views over cars.

Some dont like it i know, but some love it and its a big selling point to those.

Id have one over an inline 4, but still prefer a vtwin and the v4 in the vfr isnt bad, although more peaky than a vtwin or boxer.

Yes you are right of course and those that like it seem to stick with it for years.  Not for me but then it wouldn't do for us all to be the same.

Mine was an early 2005 initial production model, I had it new and rode it for 6 months and around 15,000 miles, keeping it uncovered outside when not in use.

Warranty claims:

2x gearbox (jumping out of gears)

Clocks set, steaming up

Left switchgear, cruise not working

Bolts and fittings corroded

Pannier lock broke

Flashers full of water

Fork and wheel corrosion

etc

The R1150 and R1100RTs it replaced were utterly bomb-proof, corrosion proof and better made; things like the clocks were domed to avoid reflections from sun behind you whereas on the early 1200s (now changed) they had a huge plastic panel which reflected the sun badly, plus they had knee-pads on the tank, the 1200 got marked, etc.

Simply ook at a used 50,000 mile 90s RT compared to a 10 year old 50,000 mile RT and see which is in better nick!

Make no mistake though, the 1200 was a revelation in handling, weight, slickness etc over the older models, but felt like a cheaper Japanese bike.

I'd have another, but would have to have the ESA, heated seat/grips on it and have a bullet-proof warranty as when they do break they cost loads to fix. The ESA electronic suspension adjust makes the bike as it transforms from luxo-barge to scratcher as needed.  Looking at later models, the clocks have changed and the issues seemed to have been ironed out with gearboxes (Bike mag editor was on his third box at the time).

A client has the K1600 and that it a 61 plate and corroded already though....

I couldn't have a GS now as they are too trendy, but I like the BMW "use it and jet wash it" idea, rather than spending hours detailing a bike and never using it.  Their Euro warranty package with hotel cover was good too IIRC but compared with my single days when buying new was easy, I'd now need to look at older stuff to fit in with a budget and then the unloved/out fo fashion used touring stuff makes better sense than paying the BMW premium.

Really?

My R1150R was abysmal, with fasteners rotting quicker than you could look at them and paint jumping off of the engine and suspension parts to be quickly replaced by ally rot

Horrid, horrid thing

Strange your experience was so different to mine, though I did pamper mine and for a beemer owner I did low milage and avoided the worst of the weather and kept it clean, so that might explain things. Mine was a 52 plate and the chap that bought it paid what I was asking without any quibbling at all. I really liked mine especially with the laser exhaust, no cat and ecu chip. Even then it wasn't what you'd call fast but it had a character my jap bikes never had.

Cant value character enough tbf

A department the VFR is lacking abit tbf.

SV engine had more character.

Have to agree about the VFR.  Good to ride but nothing to get excited about.  I find the Tiger has far more all round.

Handling isnt bad at all and it does shift well when its in vtec, headlights are brilliant for a bike, but its just lacking something.

Hmm yeah. Do like a triple

I often ride with other Tiger owners.  Some have the 800 with the Scorpion? exhaust.  They sound really good with or without the baffle that falls out incredibly easily apparently. :dull:   For some reason the Triumphs pop and bang a bit on the over run but that certainly does add character and even with ear plugs in the engine sounds really good and far better than a V4 or twin.  Not owned or ridden an across the frame 4 for years but they all sound the same really and are only changed by exhaust choice.

HA!

i went to a meet a few weeks ago, primarily a car meet but a few bikes there too. Just went to view some nice vehicles tbh

A lad approached me when i was browsing around and said 'WHAT BIKE YOU GOT?!' So i told him, n he genuinly said 'WANNA BE BURN OUT BUDDIES?'

I just laughed. Never heard anything like it since i was in primer school.

Then he redlined his old Kawasaki with no exhaust on. It genuinely hurt my ears, wasnt even nice, just a high pitched horrible screaming noise. Couldnt hear for about 10 minutes afterwards.

Wasnt best pleased lol
