Dash Cams

Adrian Flux specifically say they offer a discount for Blackvue cameras. So, given I have one, I phoned them up and got a discount on my quote of exactly £0.00.

I don't have one to get cheaper insurance, I have it for my own protection. The saving is from changing a 50/50 or at-fault to a non-fault.

  • It's funny. Before I found this site, I would never have dreamt of doing mods or even considered buying a dash cam! A bad influence you lot are!!

  • This picture should sum up what I got around to today and what element to this task went wrong after I returned from an extended test drive for a comparison video v the Blackvue.........     chrisw

  • Because you'll have a dead phone after a while from it constantly writing to the flash memory, unless you use a replaceable card.   Because you can leave the camera in the car when parked up to catc

I would be making sure they know I no longer have a camera in case they now would require it to be on and working. I have been running cameras for almost 5 years now for the exact same reasons. If the day ever comes when someone causes an accident and then decided to lie threw their teeth, I will let them dig a big hole for themselves, before I pull out the camera card :D

Hi all great post.

Quick question I am thinking of buying one of these camera's,and have been following this post.

This will be my first camera and do not know which one to buy!

I like Blackvue 400 v2 and Mobius, but is worth spending the extra money for the Blackvue what do you think?

Fubar

I know that you have both, and i know the Blackvue comes with more features which I like.

But is the picture good enough to justify the extra money? Can you read number plates?

Thanks for any help.

I went through a couple of BlackVue DR500GW's (GPS & Wifi) features wise it was great but I had the same issue with both that when I drove down any road with trees the picture went to absolute rubbish (be lucky to work out what make of car let alone model). But it was when they first came out and while searching around others had the same problem (inc on this forum), others again have had no issues. The DR400 V2 is essentially the same camera minus the WiFi and seems to be the fairly bullet proof by all accounts.

The difference between the BlackVue and Mobius aside from price is that the Mobius will display date / time on the video where the Blackvue will additionally display speed. The quality of video (when my DR500 was working perfectly in open) is IMO slightly better on the Mobius for pausing a video and reading a registration going the other way, I find the Mobius better. The build quality of the cameras and long term reliability, the BlackVue is more tried and tested, for the Mobius only time will tell (seems well made).

Mobius is mounted with either a self adhesive mount (like my pics) or a similar shaped suction one (slightly bigger requires it to be fitted a bot lower). The BlackVue is more compact and able to be fitted closer to screen and completely hidden from drivers view behind rear view mirror.

Final note I make between the two is that I prefer the picture recorded on the Mobius as it's less fish eye / distant a capture. If the DR400 V2 dropped to the same price today as the Mobius I would still go for a Mobius personally. I had full GPS data logging on my old DoD GS600 dash cam which I have run for years and don't really miss the speed on video. For serious accident stuff this can be worked out between 2 fixed points on video if it was serious enough to need to.

Thanks for your quick reply.

This is what I thought that the Mobius is the better picture, the only thing is that it dose not have parking mode.

Lets hope with any luck it will get a software update that puts that in.

It seem to be a tough little camera as it is used on model aircraft, check out the RC forums

Anyway thank you very much.

Strangely my one flashes red when its recording and not blue as stated in the destructions!!! Anyone else's do this?

k:)

Mine flashes red too kit although it didn't this morning and I had to unplug it and replug it in

Are there not different colours it flashes on bottom of unit (side with heat sink) and the back (where plug goes in) with the red one being the indicator at back? I am sure mine are different colours but I leave the flashing recording indicator option off as its set to go straight to record I can't be doing with a flashing light at night. To be sure it is on and recording I touch the heat sink and I know its doing it's thing from the heat :D

I really wouldn't hold out hope for a F/W update to add this feature, more likely to be in a later model down the line than upgrading the existing one, as it would help them sell the next model in future.

You can leave it plugged in or wired in permanently to record, I have accidentally left my old camera on for 3 or 4 days with no problems starting car. In that sense you could turn off the auto record when powered on so that it starts and stops recording when you power it up from the unit itself instead, so you still have the ability to turn it off. Or you could just leave it set to record all time and permanently wired in and just pull plug out of it when you want it to stop (not bad for camera).

This is a problem I have been having and in my case it is not recording and won't unless I fiddle with buttons, or try charging it again. I've raised a question with the supplier who thinks it may be the battery not properly holding charge. Will report back.

I think mine might be down to being hard wired in, but will keep an eye on it.

I think maybe the light at the back only flashes red! Its the only one i can see from the drivers seat, so perhaps the other light is flashing the right colour, i'll do some investigating later :)

K:)

I've seen blue, but I think that is on the underside and when it was connected to my PC but I could be wrong.

Oh and my suction mount is still attached in the black dotted area

Just an update on my issue.

I am still having problems with the camera recording on start up and sometimes even turning it on at all.

I have contacted the seller on ebay I used, eletoponline365 who have been excellent. They have now sent a new battery free of charge to try and eliminate that as a fault (I have my doubts it is the fault mind) and they are keen to help. I have to say when it works it is excellent, and if anyone is thinking of one of these cameras, you could do worse than use my seller.

A note to those hard wiring their mobius in. Don't do what I did and run the cable near the radio arial, I am struggling for reception on Radio 2 especially so until I can re-route it, my camera is switched off

Adam hope yours gets sorted mate, mine has been great bar 2 occasions where it didn't auto start

Will keep you posted.  Not sure why hard wiring has caused that issue for you, doesn't seem logical unless it is a frequency interference thing with the camera on...

New Firmware for the Mobius v0.45 or 4.5 or whatever is out now. Plugged it in to adjust some settings and saw it so quickly did it. If you update F/W don't forget this will reset all your preferences and you should go back in and put them back the way you want to.

Update said it was to get rid of some glitch which caused card to be wiped when full or something.

Yeah I'd already updated mine before this issue, but thanks for the suggestion.

Not updated mine for a while, need to find a spare usb cable as I cannot get to the installed one as its hidden behind the dash

Had the pleasure of this visually impaired eejit earlier today, when I passed him he stopped completely for a couple of seconds presumably in shock?! I probably didn't need to horn him but hey ho.

So, I've yet to even try mine in the car (which I only got back yesterday, so forgiveable I reckon ;) )

Anyways, on reading the instructions, it says that:

The current clip can be write-protected by pressing the Mode button while recording.

However having set my Mobius to do 5 minute 'clips', what I'm unclear of is whether the incident I want to keep is still in the current clip... or will it retain the last 5 minutes from when I press the Mode button as a 'clip' of its own?

Hope that makes sense - basically, as my clips are all set as 5 minutes long, there is a danger that if I press the mode button '2 seconds' into a new clip, then i'm not keeping what I think I am keeping (for example)

I wondered the same, but so far anything I have saved has been the clip I wanted

Pete I know its none of my business, but you are saying the driver pulling on to the road is in the wrong, however IMHO I think you are in the wrong. Again IMHO the right thing to to do would have been to slow down. just sayin like.

It only saves the clip that's currently recording, but a 32gb card has about four hours at best quality so plenty of time to stop it being recorded over.
