Dash Cams

Pete I know its none of my business, but you are saying the driver pulling on to the road is in the wrong, however IMHO I think you are in the wrong. Again IMHO the right thing to to do would have been to slow down. just sayin like.

You're quite entitled to that opinion.

Yes I could have braked, but I was doing 40mph (it's a 40 area) and I would have had to scrub off the best part of 25mph (the Honda driver was clearly not in any rush and judging by his reaction he wasn't even aware of my presence) then not have the opportunity of overtaking for another mile due to double white lines, so I decided to go around as it was safe to do so.

  • It's funny. Before I found this site, I would never have dreamt of doing mods or even considered buying a dash cam! A bad influence you lot are!!

  • This picture should sum up what I got around to today and what element to this task went wrong after I returned from an extended test drive for a comparison video v the Blackvue.........     chrisw

  • Because you'll have a dead phone after a while from it constantly writing to the flash memory, unless you use a replaceable card.   Because you can leave the camera in the car when parked up to catc

It's a split second decision and I've done the same myself.

Im gonna be ordering mine soon....but question is, is it worth getting a rear camera or not.....then again, rear shunts happen alot.....either way, how have people connected there rear cameras..

It only saves the clip that's currently recording, but a 32gb card has about four hours at best quality so plenty of time to stop it being recorded over.

Ah, ok, I only have an 8gb in mine (so around 1 hour) - it was just one I had lying around so I'll probably get a bigger card and keep this one in the car just in case i'm doing a trip to Scotland, and something happens that i'm unsure is gonna be retained (so I can swap the card out just to be certain)! :) I'm guessing most stuff I'll want to retain though will mean the end of a journey for me anyways ;)

Has anyone specifically bought a 32gb card for this device? - If so, can you post a link of what you bought (I'd rather go for something that is known to work with the device... and also be legit as I know places like ebay are a minefield for memory cards!)

I bought a 32gb class 6 one for mine from mymemory.co.uk, think it was about £20. Works fine. I'll try and find a link :)

kit :)

Just a quick question for the Blackvue owners out there.

I have moved mine to the 12v fuse, so it's always live. With the autopark feature is this always on? Is there a risk of battery drain?

I bought this but from their ebay shop which was cheaper.

They don't have it listed on ebay at the moment.

Have been using it since I bought the mobius camera in July without any problems.

Didnt go for a class ten one even though it was cheaper as the manufacturer said there might be problems. Good to see it works ok though :)

Yes, plus it puts out enough heat that in winter there is a very obvious 'look at me' melted patch in the frost on your windscreen.

Cheers for the info re: memory cards chaps - appreciate it :)

Just so you are aware, the manual I have for my Mobius states:

To avoid card compatibility problems, always use quality cards with a speed rating of Class 4 or greater.
:) doesn't mention sticking to just Class 4 - do you have old documentation perhaps? :)

I'm surprised to not find any mention of people using their smartphone as a dash cam.

Considering it has camera, gps, accelerometers pretty much everything required for a dash cam.

I have had a search and found an app for Android called AG (search for dash cam)

I've been giving it a try and it seems to tick all the boxes.

Any thoughts?

Tried it with mine but my holder is not quite high enough and it tends to focus on the dash, might give a specific app a try though and see.

Turning my phone holder horizontal works perfectly. Just need to address the power supply issue, stupid position of cig lighter!

Its mostly due to the convenience. When you jump in your car to pop 2 minutes round the corner to pop to the shops I would never bother doing it defeating the point of the whole exercise as it will be sods law that its that journey you have the accident. The main benefit of the cam is its just there doing its stuff without you having to anything - also when the wife jumps in its also there as I know she would not bother to put the phone in the bracket (which would also need changing as she has a different phone

also have a look at "daily roads voyager"

The big advantage of a 'proper dash cam' is that most now have a wide angle lens - 120 degrees or better - where a standard lens on a phone is about half of this.

I got one of these http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261160842398 (might not be that seller) permanently stuck to the black area behind the mirror in a 'dark sock' (to hide / blur the shape), Having a rear camera - it will also record the guy who runs in the back then fails to stop.

OOO I like that one, front and rear camera in one package.

Got any example footage?

Does it trigger on power, or is it motion only?

There have been loads of dual camera setups on ebay for years now. Be sure to try to find good in depth reviews and footage examples.

It says it does motion detection, but I have it start recording on power on ... currently by plugging into lighter socket but will put an accessory lighter socket in the drivers glove box that comes on with ignition. You have to use the power adaptor that comes with the cam ... the mini usb on the camera is often not wired as you'd expect it.

I wanted gps so the cam time - recorded on the video - would be correct and not drift or reset itself to be months or years out.

In middle of installing Mobius No.2 in rear of car......... decisions decisions!!!!!! Where to put it to be least annoying to me..... how to route wiring from hatch to inside of car allowing for it to open uninterrupted.........

I put a DAB aerial on the top-right of the tail-gate, routed the cable under the trim, through the gap and into the roof-lining and to the front of the car. The beauty of this is that you really can't get the length "wrong" over the gap, and there's not much of a loop of cable (right in the corner) to cause a distraction either. I'll be fitting the rear camera on mine next week and will probably put the camera beside the brake light and take the cable along the same route as the aerial.

I have it all in now I went the low route but do like the roof lining idea sounds spot on! My cable is fairly thick but put it from driver side storage compartment through fuse box under sill trim where it meets fuse box cover. Then I went under that basically all way to rear seat up under rear seat side bolster and excess cable stored in there at cavity at top. Then Plugged camera into it there. looking out rear window I put it to left of middle brake light as the least obstructive position after a lot of humming and haaaaaaaaaaaing. Gets good view from there too. Need to think of going up into headlining from bolster and see what happens that way. Sounds like an ideal spot.

I have to admit the roof lining route does offer very little in the way of rseing around. ;)

I think it took me about 20/30 mins to do (at the most), which included working out how to get access. My excess cable is above the driver, as that's where the 1st part of the cable stopped.

Good to see another job done :)

For those who have them with rear screen, is it useful?

I see the mobius does not, anyone got confused to be like a radar detector?

I would like one, anyone recomend below de mobius or bottom line mobius is the way to go.

50€ tops

Mobius is spot on, best value I have seen against quality. I have one in front and one in rear of car now. I have had a few cameras with rear screen and it's useful for the lining it up side of things, but I only do that when I install as it stays in the car after that, making it redundant! You could use screen for showing someone what just happened in the event of a collision where some moron is lying through their teeth to hopefully avoid them bothering and just holding their hands up. I would rather let them dig a massive pit for themselves then drop my footage bomb on them. On that side most smart phones these days have a micro SD card slot (unless you have an apple or some HTC's) I could easily take card out of camera fire into phone and show someone on a better sized and quality screen should the urge be there. But overall screen IMO is pointless and just adds to the size. In fact I gave away my last inbuilt screen one the other week.

With the budget it's hard to find one with a screen that actually is any good, certainly not seen one half as good as the Mobius's quality.
