Engine codes - cam sensor - any experience?

Featured Replies

hi there :) I've just acquired a fabia vrs 2005 (ASZ)

the exhaust management light has been coming on intermittently after the car has been driven, engine warmed, responding well it seems - not on 'limp home' mode I mean - plugging it into diagnostic gives the message 'cam position sensor g40 not a plausible signal p3008 unknown subcode'.

The only problem the vehicle seems to be having is starting from cold (!) - it will crank and crank and crank then eventually fire. Once it fires it is fine. It will start easily then after that and still start after being stood for hours afterwards. But the management light will come on after it has been driven for 15 miles or so... clear the display and it will return again.

Looking up online I found lots of references to poor running, misfiring etc from cam misalignment - this car doesn't seem to suffer from any of these symptoms.

Possible causes are listed as -

  • camshaft timing out of specification
  • wiring to sensor faulty
  • sensor faulty
  • engine control module faulty

could it be an airleak in the fuel line?

has anybody else had this warning light come on with similar symptoms..?

any advice on next steps to take to try and rectify. It's the difficulty starting from cold and then the light not coming on until after running for some time that is puzzling.

we put a new battery in hoping the starting difficulty was due to that (as a couple of cranks off a jump start would get it going with the old battery) but no joy!

Any advice or thoughts appreciated!

A whiff of 'EasyStart' up the air cleaner never fails.

Just an update in case it helps anybody searching for a similar issue.

Looked at the MAF sensor which was loose and dirty. Cleaned and refitted it and so far, the car has been starting on the first crank - although that management light came back on today after it had been out and about for a while. So no further forward with that - hopefully it will be a mucky crank sensor...

Found an oil leak under the rocker top which has been sorted with new seals as well.

Got an additional key fob which tried programming today with the original transponder key in the ignition. So now the key fob will central unlock on remote, but won't start the engine..??
