Strange Coolant Temp reading - seen it before?

Featured Replies

My temp gauge should read 90 degrees Celcius once the engine has warmed up. (say 20 minutes of driving).

But the problem I have is that when I coast it, the temp will drop to say 70 then once I start to accelerate, it will slowly come back up again. This is only peceivable if I coast it for more than a minute as the needle moves slowly.

Checked with Torque App and (obviously) get the same readings.

I can imagine that the sender is on its way out, but was wondering what the ECU uses this reading for and whether it had an impact on other components, mechanisms depending on this reading. (Which margins are we talking about?)

Or would it be that the mix is too lean/rich and therefore the temp drops too fast????

Also, Do you know of any checklist I should go through in reduce the goose hunt to a minimum.

thanks in advance

mine is same, if i drive gentle it stays around 80 degrees, only hits 90 in mine if im pushing on. 70 on a long coast. It matches up with what i would expect temp to be under these condition

Sounds more like the stat is knackerd to me and is sticking open

mmmm maybe but mine never exceeds 90 deg, would that still be thermostat?

Yup its not closing fully had mine replaced a couple of months ago due to it. It started off when the temp would drop if I was driving really fast in cold weather but then it started taking ages to warm up. If yours is keeping the engine cold you will start using more fuel

Same as mine, stat was kaput.

right well for £10 or so ill swap it out. Out for a run tonight i was driving gently at 50 mph and temp wouldnt go above 70 degrees, she was left idling while i was stopping place to place and i didnt see her above 85 degrees, where my other car got up to temp in 5 minutes and doesnt budge from there.

Next job on the cards then. Where is this item located on my alh lump?

Usually they're somewhere in the engine bay, with atleast one coolant pipe going to it. Other than that I ain't a clue lol

found it, its directly below the fuel pump, behind a plastic pipe that holds it in.

See I was right! lol

interesting so not necessarily the sensor, but rather the thermostatic valve. (rather handy for track days...)

think there's a guide on here, by Bowders, explaining how to change the stat?

thanks for replies so far

Sounds like a thermostat problem, mine reaches 90 and stays put

I would expect a constant temp is better with regards to expansion of fluids and "block vs head".

still not sure what the ECU uses this for and whether it treats anything between 70 and 90 as the same

sorted now anyway new stat and coolant. Bang on 90 degrees, problem solved
