New vRS owner, tyre advice needed

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I've just got a new Octavia vRS TDi and it's got some god awful budget tyres on the front. I'm going to get some new ones and was thinking about getting some Michelin Pilot Sport 3 but wondered what peoples experience with them were. I know on the Fabia's people go with the Uniroyals and Toyos but not sure about the Octaivas. Thanks

They have an offer on until the 31st July (because of slow sales they need to do offer's) so be quick if you want some, they are designed more for comfort than sport through, they snap out without warning & reqiure many weight's, if you want feel to let you know when your on the limit then these are not for you. .

Im due for some new tyres on the front of my vrs, I was thinking about the michelin ps3's but there are too many mixed reviews about the wear rate, so I've gone for Goodyear f1's because I'm getting a bit of discount as my neighbour works at a local tyre garage !

Otherwise my money would have been spent on a pair of hankook evo12's.....they have really good reviews and for the money they seem like good value, infact they must be pretty good, because most places I have rang, have been sold out !

Buy either of these, and your have one of the best all round tyre's, they are both at the top of many tyre test site's . .

Check out some Hankook tyres.

Great value all round

Thanks for the help guys, I looked at some Hankook tyres but the good ones only seem to be summer tyres and I'm looking for some all year round ones, will probably give the Michelin PS3 ones a go

PS3 are a summer tyre too, most are really unless you compromise and go for an "all season" which is a compromise in both summer and winter. I've just replaced the god-awful Evergreens on my vRS with the latest Goodyear F1's and they seem excellent so far.

Those PS3's are summer tyres as well as far as I know

People buy Skoda because they are the best bang for your buck out there

The same could be said for Hankook tyres.

Give it a shot.. Team them up for a perfect partnership.

I did and have no regrets

+1 for PS3 £513 all round from my local slo-fit. The fronts are vanishing faster than my '84 sud in the rain, but to be fair 297lb/ft of twist action is probably the culprit.

Have had Toyo T1-R's and Falken 452's on my vRS, before I sold it. Had no problems with either, despite giving them some spirited use at times. Falkens had good wet weather grip and both were good for wear on the rear, as it can chew up the inside edge, especially if the geometry is out a fraction.

At all cost though avoid Dunlop lol.

Falken 452's all the way. Good priced and good all round performance, wear etc

Thanks, I saw the falkens but wasn't sure as I hadn't heard anything about them

Falken's trading name is:- Dunlop Falken Tires Ltd. .

But they're not called Dunlop 452's are they. I've had 2 different styles of Dunlop and neither were impressive, however I really like the Falkens.

Out of interest, when was the last time you had some Dunlop's?

It was July 2009 when I swapped what was left of the Dunlops for a nice new set of Toyo T1-R's. Not had Dunlops since after they got trashed on the rear. Toyo's stood up much better to inside edge wear. Love the Falkens and had several pairs since and for the money I'll have a few more sets.

To be fair, Dunlop have made many improvement's since then, that's not to say they will suit you still. .

I've also got Ps'3 s on mine I've run hankooks a few times on many differant cars. Found them superb value and pretty sure they r made by Michelin group anyway.

Hankook has no ties with Michelin. .

I have just replaced the Dunlop sport maxx gt's on my Vrs and replaced them with Toyo proxies 4. Two of the Dunlops still had 6 mm of tread left.

I've gone against the grain as I swear by Uniroyals rain sports but thought I'd give these a trye

I have a Octavia vRs cr with 9k miles but have had the car reported by the dealer that rears have worn on inside such that they need replacement.

Skoda have authorised replacement at a 75% cost to them as a fault but will not replace them with original Dunlop maxx but offer Continental 5 as a cure plus a four wheel alignment. Buyer beware they identify the block pattern as part of the problem.

I will now have 4 new continentals fitted watch this space as shall watch them like a hawk for the same problem.

Not had my Vrs long but the tyres are looking very close to the TWIs for my liking.

Previous car has Bridgestone Turanzas which had great traction (in both wet & dry conditions) the wear rate was acceptable too.

Has anyone used Bridgestone Potenza RE050s ?

RE050s get a great reputation, particularly with Jap stuff - Impreza and Integra Type-R particularly. Don't know of anyone running them on an Octy though.

What price have you seen them at?

My vRS came with RE050s on it.To be honest I found them very noisy.

Good grip wet and dry when new but when they were past 1/2 worn It was very easy to light up the fronts in the wet.

Rotated them twice and got 19k kms out of the fronts.

Have Hankook Ventus Prime 2 on it now and am very happy with them.

As it happens, my rears are close to the TWI (swapped from fronts at 10k), its going for servicing on Saturday and they'll put Nankang NS2s on which were great on my old skud...

Maybe they'll slow me down so last longer than 18k...

But I doubt it! ;)
