Busy Weekend (Wheel Refurb and 256 Rear Brakes)

Featured Replies

Picked up a set of Octavia Alloys this week (Cheers Cliff). I've been looking for a spare set for a while

Needed a refurb, its dry weekend so I thought I'd get started (and also ended up finishing !)

A few quick pics that I took

Original Wheels

So a quick going over with some scotch bright pads, then some filler primer and some black paint left me with this

Then some masking tape
Wheels2.jpg

Then some Race Blue paint

Peeled off the masking tape and

Then a quick coat or two of Clear lacquer and the finished result

The complete set

Done very quickly but was not going to spent too much time on a set of wheels which will only be on the car a few days a year. From a distance they don't look too bad.

But while I was waiting for the paint to dry in between coats had time to change my rear brakes from this

To this

Fair play a bit bigger

Need sleep now knacked !!!!

Karl

Those wheels look awesome korban

So how long out of the weekend did the brakes take you to do? I've got a set of 256s that need fitting at some point, but I just keep putting it off as it seems like it'll be a pain in the ass...

What rubber you going for on those rims? Looking good btw

Shouldn't take anymore than an hour and half.

Nice work Karl

A weekend well spent

Looking superb ( so your not just an electrical wizard) lol

Regards Whoosh

love the look of the new wheels, thay're brilliant!

what are the rear brakes off of?

The 256mm rear setup comes on the Mk1 Octavia vRS, the Mk1 Leon Cupra R, some Mk4 Golf GTIs and the Mk1 S3 (although this is 4WD and needs spacers).

The 4wd ones don't fit at all afaik

Ah, maybe. I thought they did with a 6mm shim of some sort, but that was too much like hard work so I just made sure I bought 2WD ones...

Yeah I think that was theory, when someone tried to do it there was no joy

Even with the shim as used on the MK4 Golf the disc hits the centre of the carrier.

Top work Karl

I had my doubt wen you said race blue but I think they look great.... on their own.

I'll withhold judgement about how they look on the car until i see it - It could be race blue oveload :D

That said Mrs Pasty loves them and i reckon they'd look awesome on our black car - i'll buy them back off you now if you like.... ;)

Stunning, top work. Looks the dogs

I'll be interested to see what they look like on the car. If I ever get mine done (i.e. they're in good nick now but if my other half kerbs them) I'm thinking of going for a mid grey. Just a little lighter than anthracite.

Fabulous Karl, good work!

About 2- 2 1/2 hours, spent half hour working out what to do with the stone guard !

Thanks Davy, I am a bit of a DIYer the only work on the car that I haven't done myself was changing the console bushes (bad back at the time)

Will get some pictures up in a few weeks they need to be on for the 8th Sept. My every day ones are Gunmetal Grey which I think really suits the car.

Fabulous Karl, good work!

Cheers Joe, you gave me the idea !!

Well done Karl, wheels look bloody awesome! Make sure you put some pics up once fitted to your car.

They look really good mate. Really impressed. Would look good the other way round too with black spokes and blue lip :-)

About 2- 2 1/2 hours, spent half hour working out what to do with the stone guard !

Did you remove them in the end? That's one thing I am missing, the splashguards had already been sold so the "kit" I bought is just calipers, carriers and a set of discs. Haven't decided whether to remove it, buy new splashguards, or just notch the guards that are already on to make them flat and just bend them to shape so they cover the back of the bigger discs but not the edges.

Cheers guys

Will get some photos up in the beginning of September, driving her down to the South of France this weekend !!

I did consider the colour the other way around and I might regret my choice, have to wait until they are on the car.

Did consider removing them, requires you to take the hub off to remove the 4 bolts holding them on. In the end notched them in about 5 or 6 places and tried flattening them out, but suddenly realised that they would be larger than the disc's and you would see the cut edges, so ended up bending them over about a cm on it's self to make them smaller. Easily done with a pliers and mole grips. took about 10 mins each splash guard and you can't see them when looking through the wheel.

Karl

Ah, so you notched them and folded them forwards rather than backwards. That sounds like a good solution, it was the removal that concerned me, having to remove hub nuts etc, which makes it a bit more complicated. I'm hoping to be able to get access to some ramps (and a friendly mechanic) to make the job a lot easier, but it could end up having to be a driveway job so the more I can get away with missing out the better.

Cheers Joe, you gave me the idea !!

And Cliff gave me the idea and then sold you the wheels!!

Cant wait to see it at Combe!

That's a better way of describing it, can't be seen behind the disc's and you still have a splash guard. The job is easy to do, just remember to slacken off the handbrake adjuster first !

Only special tools required are a caliper wind back tool (can be done with out it) and a brake bleeding kit.

Yes Cliff told me he had spoken to you about your wheels.

See you at Combe

Karl
