Darkside EGR Delete

Featured Replies

There have been a lot of threads recently complaining of diesel engines that 'hiccup' or seem to have poor throttle response.

I have been considering for some time doing an EGR delete, as on a 160K engine it was only a matter of time before it started to give me grief.

Following a recommendation from Wardy I purchased the following

A trip to Ben@Shark yesterday and my Stage 1 map was tweaked to ignore the EGR valve.

Today I removed the EGR valve and replaced it with the pipe. I have blanked off the EGR take off at the EGR cooler for now, I'll get round to doing the cooler removal in a week or so as it will involve dropping the coolant to sort the hoses out properly.

Initial impressions were that the idle was smoother and quieter - I had noticed previously a little 'stutter' every now and then at idle. This has gone completely.

So, I have just been on a quick road test and the difference is immediately apparent - the throttle response is sharper and I am sure it feels more powerful overall (but that may be wishful thinking).

I would recommend this to anyone suffering from the odd stutter and hiccup, and my EGR valve was quite clean compared to some I have seen!

Does the coding to "ignore" the EGR ignore the fault being thrown (DTC), or does it tell the computer to stop opening the EGR? If it's the latter, then could the hardware be left alone?

Just asking, since that would be a good reason to get the new map.

It ignores the EGR flow values I believe, so you don't get the EML coming on. You just blank off the vac pipe going to the EGR after it has been removed. Ben would be the person to ask though.

It may be different for cars with a DPF as I think that when it is in regen it partially closes the ASV and opens the EGR more to get hotter intake and exhaust temps.

In theory you could have the map done and just disconnect and block the vac hose.

When you see the inside of a EGR it presents some restriction to air flow, so I am glad I removed mine.

What do Shark charge for this?

Usually it's the later. Basically the instructions to open the EGR are removed along with the flow adjustments that occur when EGR is open. The result is no error and no error light. You could leave all the EGR hardware in place and it would sit there forever doing nothing. But most people only get around to an EGR delete when something is wrong with the hardware.

Forgive my ignorance but what's the difference between fitting an EGR blanking plate and getting the EGR mapped out, which some people suggest, and fitting a race pipe and cooler delete pipe and getting it mapped out?

I may be being an idiot here, be cruel if you must

I think Shark charged me £30, on top of the map.  Plus I had other work done too.

Can we get some pics up of removing the cooler?

Mines got darkside delete and shark stage one with dpf removed. But wanna drop the cooler also as im blanked off at the turbo now.

I can take some photos of what it looks like with the EGR delete and cooler removed, if that helps?

I had mine done in 2011, so it's a bit late for 'how to' photos :D

yeah please, I wanna ditch my cooler but cant really see whats what and where etc lol

So Shark "disabled" mine, and fitted a blacking plate, if I remember.  What is the point of going further?  Is it just underbonnet aesthetics?

Not aesthetics for me. It's the removal of items that are no longer required.

The coolers can split and leak, and the replacement race pipes provide a better flow as nothing to restrict IMO.

Right so the race pipe and egr delete pipe basically replace the EGR, while the blanking plate is just simply stopping it from being used but leaving it there?

Yup you got it.

Thanks!

The more you know :)

Be careful with race pipes as I thought they replaced the EGR and the ASV.

Unless it is a track car, you don't want to be removing the ASV, it is there for a reason, to stop the engine running on when you turn the ignition off by shutting off the air supply.

Just get a Darkside EGR delete pipe and the adapter for the coolant hoses and then you can remove the EGR cooler as well, and all the pipework that goes with it. You do need to get it mapped out properly though, I have heard horror stories of cheap maps just disabling the EML, which turned it off for all kinds of other possible faults, not just EGR flow.

I can only completely agree with the above.

I went for a 'Motorsport' kit (as it was advertised) from another well-known company who sell EGR blanking kits.

It's not a good idea, and is effectively mis-sold in my opinion. When I found there was a far better solution available from Darkside, I swapped to that. To note, with this 'Motorsport' version in place, there were difficulties in mapping the vehicle correctly.

Mines the darkside developments race pipe, only replaces the EGR, the ASV stays in place.

I've had the shark stage one done,EGR mapped out.

So what is the difference between the Darkside race and non-race versions? I know another manufacturers race pipe replaces the ASV as well.

I have no idea on the differences, I just purchased the one I needed.

Just checked their website, they only do one version that I can see, and confusingly call it a EGR delete/race pipe. Allard have 2 versions, and the one they call a race pipe replaces the ASV as well.

Evening,

After seeing the state on my egr valve this weekend I looking at fitting the dark side replacement parts.

I am down near Oxford. Does anyone know of a reputable place that will sort out the EML after I fit the bits. I'm running a standard 105 1.9tdi.

Thanks

Is there a Shark Performance dealer down your way?
