Cracked lacquer on my spolier (:

Featured Replies

Hi

After some advice

A piece of lacquer has cracked off my spoiler (about a 50p size) and wondered if anyone had any great tips for a fix (outside of re-spraying it). I have the lacquer already from Skoda.

Found this kit online

https://www.paints4u.com/ProductDetails.aspx?productID=8761&Mainselection=22

Any tips would be gratefully received

Thanks

Is it still in Warranty?

Car was registered in 2007 in November so I reckon not (:

Trust me I would be straight down there is I could lol

Mine started with two small bubbles then a crack and look where its at now! I plan to leave it until it all flakes off, remove the spoiler and pay a body shop to re-lacquer it.ytyqe3a9.jpg

Blimey

That is something to look forward to then...hope mine does not get that bad

Will try a fix to stop it spreading but reckon a re-spray is the only way forward?

Thanks for posting the pic

I got my 57 plate one done last month by Skoda on the paint Warranty.

if you can get it done under Skoda warrenty then go for it, sadly I cant as I service the car myself so the service book hasnt been stamped since I bought it. I dont know what the mechanical history has got to do with the paint and body condition though it just seems to be another way to fob off a very disapointed Skoda driver.

Is there not a paint warranty?

Yes 10 years paint and body covering corrosion from the inside out. I was refused a claim when I took it to the dealer for bubbling sills just because the service book was missing a few stamps.

The paint warranty is only valid if the car has a full service history, since part of that is supposed to include a body inspection.

Ok

So I have a full history and the car was only serviced last week so might try and give them a call

I did look online and the paint warranty only seemed to be for 3 years?

I will let you know how I get on

Just checked and paint/lacquer is only 3 years

Oh well DIY it is and then when that fails I will get it re-painted

Cheers

The kit you showed is for repairing a scratch in the lacquer, Im guessing it will loook a bodge on a bigger area.

A quick fix might be a sticker of some sort over it.

If its peeling lacquer its going to continue to peel so the only proper fix is to get the lot off & repaint / lacquer it. If you have a friendly local body shop you may be pleasantly suprised how little cash is needed.

Personally because its pretty rare it has to be a defect in the cars production so I would act inocent on your knowledge of detail in the paint warranty & go to a skoda dealer with your " extreemly anoyed head on" Skoda have been known to pay out for things out af warranty so theres a chance as it isnt a lot to fix it. To my mind a paint warranty is just that, your lacquer has failed through nothing anyones done, just poor production

Poor quality lacquer on the vRS spoilers is a common issue.

Skoda UK are aware of it and have paid for resprays on car's out of warranty (mine included).

Give them a call, it costs nothing to ask and will save you £100 or a Saturday afternoon.

Good luck.

Hi

Thanks for the reply

Have tried Skoda HQ and they said they would not cover it. Guess I am not that annoyed based on the age and mileage.

Looks like I am loosing a Saturday afternoon and then when that goes wrong £100 lol

Cheers

Just had my 2007 VRS rear spoiler done. A complete body mop and respray quote was £150. I had half of the panels and rear spoiler re-sprayed and whole car mopped for £600. It looks like new again. So perhaps £100 would be a decent price. Annoying it may be but maybe you could think of it as similar to the cost of a

tank of fuel with a lasting effect.

At least you tried, it's annoying though that they won't put right a well documented manufacturing defect that they are well aware of.

I had mine paid for but it was only a few months out of warranty.

Mine did exactly the same, surprising how fast it does spread as well. Especially as water gets under it, and considering the winter months are approaching. Ended up getting a lad I work with to repray and lacquer it for me, as he does bodywork and mot preparations as his primary job for the last 20+ years. Total cost £60. Result.

Interesting: mine has gone exactly as the one in above picture,so i took it to local dealer and informed them that this is a known problem,to which they replied it was new to them.

They took and photcopied my service book, took photos of spoiler and said they would contact Skoda UK.After 3 weeks I rang them and was told they were getting a price to respray it,a week later I rang again and was told they are still waiting to hear from Skoda UK.I think it might be time for another phone call.

Went out and checked this morning and it is spreading like wild fire...so gonna get the quotes in before winter

Once the water gets in you are stuffed!

If you want I will put up how much I paid for it?

Still love the car :)

I was told a few years ago that the Paint Warranty doesn't include Plastic painted parts.

Don't ask why

In other words another Skoda get out clause

  • 5 weeks later...

No help from my local dealer Sparshatts at Fareham(where I have bought my last two cars). They stated the 3 year warranty period and have washed their hands of the problem.Have been advised that this should fall under the "Sale of goods act" and will be following this up with Skoda UK as well as the poor customer service at Sparsh*tts.

  • 3 months later...

Just bumping this as, much to my dismay, noticed a 50p size piece of lacquer peel on the spoiler of my 2006 Octavia VRS estate. It is still under warranty but I presumed it was just some back luck on my part.. however doing a search bought be back to Briskoda and many threads on this very subject.

I think I might try my luck with a warranty claim in the next week or two - the car is still under a warranty agreement with Skoda - but somehow I doubt they'll be interested.

Hi I hope you have better luck than me

The cold weather and ice really made it 100 times worse...now have a car without a spoiler as the dpf went as well and got a l&k estate instead
