Looking to get a 300D

Featured Replies

Had a play with one at a wedding the other weekend and was mightly impressed. Certainly another league from my trusty 3yr old Coolpix 885!

Was just wondering, now it's been superceded by the 350D, if there would be any good-value stock left? Don't know how long the 350D's been out though, so maybe there would only be 2nd hand models available?

Can't really afford to spend

Just seen, Canon seem to be selling refurbed ones on eBay. People's views on refurbished stock?

They are a VERY nice bit of kit...

My friend from Holland has one and I was very jealous when we went on holiday...

Not sure on where to get one from at a good price, as I've not looked in to buying one yet lol.

I ended up with two refurbished Ericsson T68i's in succession a few years ago after my original one broke down, was replaced with a refurb, which also broke down and was replaced by a second refurb, and when that broke down, I argued the toss and got a completely different phone, which has been OK ever since.

I'm very much of the opinion that most refurb electronic stuff should be avoided. Seeing how most gadgets are not designed to be repaired if they break down (replaced instead), then you tend to find that even if the refurb thing you get is working OK when you buy it, the case tends to be damaged by the repair work, and/or the bits don't seem to fit together quite right. And refurb things always seem less reliable than brand new, which is a bu99er as they don't always come with a warranty...

But don't let my prejudices stand in the way of a bargain - I'm no expert after all!

Just seen from the page that they're either:

- ...it was used as demo product (at trade fairs etc.), or

- ...the outside carton box was slightly damaged during transportation (and then replaced by a neutral brown packaging), or

- ...it was sold and the box was opened. Then the item got returned to Canon.

So they don't seem to be 'fixed' then sold on. I'm very tempted!

I've had a 300D for about 6 months now and it's fantastic. Still learning how to use it. But the quality of the pics is fantastic.

The only trouble is that you'll want to keep on spending money on different lenses / filters :)

I use the 300D at work every day. its a great little camera' date=' would look into getting a slightly better lense if you are looking for massive quality (pro) but i think you can pick them up of the dixons website cheap now!

[url']http://www.dixons.co.uk/martprd/store/dix_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@1132715939.1116940291@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccciaddejlkfhdjcflgceggdhhmdgmk.0&page=Product&sku=974956&category_oid=-22104&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null[/url]

Suppose that's cheap for Dixons, but more than I want to pay. But thanks for the tip...

In Canada last year I bought loads`of stuff to bring home.Get them to knock off the local tax. You can also claim somthing back in the UK(I think) If you already knew this....Well I've just reminded you  Have a nice trip Who are you flying with?

Yeah, cheers, I did know about this, having been over a couple of times before (family over there) but this has served as a reminder :)

Flying with 'Fly Zoom', new carrier just doing Canadian routes apparently. Flying from Manchester, think they work out of Glasgow too.

Didn't think of them, thanks - only really use them for cheaper stuff!

They do actually sell the kit as well as the body only.

Dont forget the US labels the 300D as the Digital Rebel or DRebel, and comes in black I think.

I see quite a few good condition 300d/DRebel's going for bargain prices on a certain photo forum

Thanks Andy, I had spotted the slight name difference. Where have you seen these 2nd hand 300Ds? Not picking up the hint, PM if necessary :)

Steve

Hi Wardy,

I was in the same mind as you a while back 300D or 350D I had a play with them both in Jessops and I must admit the 350D did it for me it was just so much better to use plus 8 mega pixels against the 300D's 6.2 mega pixels is going to give better results. I bit the bullet and saved up to get the 350D.

Saying that if you can find a good 300D with a 17-85mm IS USM lens that would be a very good palce to start.

Some usefull info here... http://photography-on-the.net/forum/index.php? and here...http://www.dpreview.com/

A pic from the 350D with the kit 18-55mm lens (not the best lens)...

I got the 350D the day they were released here, and I even got Jessops to price match the net at

Nice Andy, when did they come out in the UK? And how much did the Tamron lens set you back?

I got my old 300D with 18-55 lens from 7day

personally I would save for a better camera. the 300D is ok but it lacks certain functions which should be there.

The 300D is quiet capable of excellent results with little knowledge. I used Monkeyhangers at Anglesey last year and got some good pics considering it was the 1st time I had used one. I would expect the 350 to better, after all it is the replacement model.

300D is a good camera, have over 5k pics from it now and still going strong.

Mind only about 6 worthy of printing out and sending anywhere.

basic lens is ok and more than enough to get you going. Personally I'd go for a duty free 350D, test before you leave. *borrow there battery* the lens is ok for landscape and close ups, nothing else, so you may wish to pick up a 28-200 for a little zoom. Remember that the 18-55 is more like 18x1.6 so the 28 is the traditional 50 (44 near enough)

buy a 1gb or 1gb + 512 card, leave on auto or P mode for point and shoot. If your handy then of course A and T modes are fine.

You'll have a good flight to learn and read the manual. Charge it up on landing in your hotel, go and enjoy the holiday :D
