RNS 510 update from 1164

Featured Replies

Thanks kbphoto. I'm sure there's a simple explanation but when when your Columbus flashes up error messages its a scary feeling.

The only thing I can think I maybe did wrong was using 7zip instead of winrar to unrar the files. Although, the second location I downloaded it from was the complete ISO not rar files. I burnt it at 1 speed on both CD and DVD using imgburn the same way I did 3810. I'll probably pluck up the courage to have another soon but for now I just need to get over the shock of almost breaking my Columbus

Newey: unmodified. Download it from the links on the 'My GTi' website. I know that's a good one.

Ashfan: I understand. I've been there as well but I still suspect that its the media or the burn process that the Columbus doesn't like. If you've already upgraded to 38xx then I don't see why you'll brick it going to 40xx.

Yes, I know you're right and I will give it another go soon. I think I've got some branded re-writeables somewhere, I'll try one of those.

It was lucky as well when the update failed that I didn't have to reload all my music to the hard drive. And even though I updated the maps to 7920 without a problem I didn't have to as my original map 7918 was also left untouched when I reloaded 3810, strange.

Thanks for the help guys, finally went to version 3810 with absolutely no problems.

Will maybe go to 40xx when the blood pressure subsides. Horrible 50 mins.

Achieved really what I needed, 7 digit postcode and speed limit display.

Thanks again - Chris

Newey: if you've got what you want, leave it at 38xx otherwise you'll have to reinstall your maps and music.

Ashfan: rewritable discs will almost certainly fail. Sorry. The Columbus is fussy, but several people I've helped have found cheap unbranded CD-R's have worked well.

Thanks Karl. I did try a cheap unbranded cd-r but with the same result, failure at 42%, but I will persevere and have another go soon.

How long did you leave it at 42%?

I had an issue with it 'sticking' at 14% and had to leave it for about 10-15 minutes before it sorted itself out. Full instal still too under an hour.

I left it until an error message popped up saying it had failed. I can`t remember the exact wording but eventually I got the green wording on a white screen (I think, I was panicking by this stage) with wording in red in two red bands across the top and bottom of the screen again, basically saying it had failed and to abandon the install and install another firmware using the set, eject, and microphone keys. This happened with both dvd-r and cd-r discs. The same ones I`d used to install 3810.

I will eventually download it again and unrar it using winrar rather than 7zip and use a different disc. Its just getting around to it.

Having said all that 3810 seems to work fine except for yesterday, when I tried to dial out using voice dial. It was coming up with all the wrong names from my phonebook or repeating nonsense back to me when previously it had worked flawlessly.

Hi Guys,

I've just bought a Columbus 1Z0 035 680 A model H05 fw 1024. To what version should I be able to upgrade to without the battery drain issue?

It's in an O2 pFL. CAN Gateway is a 1K0 907 530 L

Thanks!

Hi Verlaanac,

From what I've read, the latest firmware you can upgrade to with an "old" unit like this is 4120 and v9 maps. Upgrading your firmware will wipe the current maps you have installed.

Be careful as that could be an revision A unit which can go up to 4020 modified for older European units - see http://www.rnsfirmware.com/. 4120 is not recommended for revision A units.

To be absolutely sure is there a Radio HW value on the label?  If there is and it is 0003 it is a revision A.

Not sure whether v10 maps would work on a revision A but I have v8 working happily on one and there are some with v9 on them too I believe.

Thanks

Adam

Hi Adam,

Thanks for the notice, I'll have to pry it out and check for the HW revision number and will let you know!

Thanks,

Arjan

Get all the info off the label (take a photo) for future reference.

Hi Adam,

Just pulled it out:

1Z0 035 680 A

HW: H05

SW:1024

Manufactured on 01.10.2009

Thanks! Arjan

Sorry to poke you guys once more, but I really have an 'A' Version I guess?

Just looking for the best FW version to apply, and what to take into account!

Thanks!

Arjan

Sorry Arjan, I am really not sure as I have never seen your part number with an A suffix (which is not the same as the revision confusingly).  My guess, and it is a guess, is that given it was manufactured in late 2009, it is too new to be an A revision, and you can probably go for the 4120.  But I'd possibly wait for a few others to comment to be sure.  Getting the HW radio version (not the same as HW05 above) via VCDS is the only way you can be sure (0003 is version A).

Kb: what do you think?

Adam

Okay, so there will be a challenge here for the experts ;)

I have a cable and VCDS Says exactly the same, H05 / 1024.

Also on the tag there is another code: 000532850.

Maybe that helps decoding what this unit is? According to the seller it is a factory fit columbus on a pFL O2.

Thanks!! Arjan

I'm also confused over the 1Z0 prefix & A suffix as I've not seen that before.

1Z0 was factory fitted to Octavia;

3T0 was fitted to Superbs.

Same unit though AFAIK .

But this thread on VW Navi shows one person at least has used a modified 3810a firmware successfully: http://vwnavi.com/volkswagen-factory-fit-navigation-systems/rns-510-mfd3-navi-system/firmware/15095-firmware-38xx-39xx-columbus-1z0-035-680-a.html

If that turns out to be true, then 3810 will be as far as it will go. But that's far enough to get most functions (not radio text) and 7-digit postcodes working (with appropriate map CD).

Arjan

If you have VCDS, you can enable the test menu.  Go into module 37/56 and adaptations and enable the development mode channel by changing the value to 1.  If you press and hold setup for 20secs the detailed version info will be available (after 5secs one menu comes up and then after 20 the more detailed one does). Towards the bottom of the detailed version information you will find the HW radio value.

Also can it be factory fit if the manufacture date is 1.10.2009 - isn't that after your car was registered given it is pre FL?

Adam

Hi Adam,

So I upgraded to the 3810 FW yesterday and applied the maps.

Everything went pretty smooth, but when using the system this morning it was unable to find any GPS fix.

Is there a step I've missed? Should I be resetting something???

Also went into the test menu and voila: RADIO HW 003. SO I think we can say it's a Rev A.

Thanks! Arjan

It is a revision A and it is worth doing a reset by pressing eject and the two buttons at the top right simultaneously and for a few seconds, which will hopefully bring back the sat fix.  Did you use the 3810 firmware modified for revision A units?

Adam

It's normal after loading maps for the GPS to show a distant location for a few minutes until it sorts itself out. When I recently loaded v10 it initially showed a location in Germany but I live in SE England. However, after a few minutes it showed the correct location and has worked well since.

Hi Adam,

That little reset eventually did the trick! It was trying after for about 4 minutes, then it came up!!

Yes, it's the altered version so I should be solid :) This morning the car was still alive so....

And I think the HDD is being kept active for longer amount of times to decrease boot times?

Thanks!

Arjan

Good result well done.

Thanks for all the help :)
