Octavia 4wheel alignment - SAVE YOUR NEW TYRES.

Featured Replies

Having owned my 56 plate Octavia vRS for just a week it comes as a bit of a kick in the ass that I have had to put 4 new tyres on it - especially as the current ones have between 5 and 7mm of tread on them.

They are completely knackered on the inner rim of the tyre.

I believe the term is sawtoothed.

They looked great parked up, the rear ones even passed a tyre inspection THIS MORNING at a tyre outlet, before I took the car to Skoda to have it aligned - refused it due to rear tyre !

So a warning to you all - get the alignment done before it ruins over £500 quids worth of tyres within 3 months !

I collect it again tomorrow morning - after many, many phone calls back and forth.

I will post pics asap after I get all the tyres back.

Alot of modern cars munch there rear tyres like this,

4 wheel alignments do sometimes improve things, bigger the wheels and less sidewall they have the worse it is

And it isn't 4 wheel alignment you need, it is a geometry check.

A BIG difference between the two.

Hmmm, geometry check ?

I really hope that the Skoda dealer does put this right.

Do they even do geometry checks ?

advice on what skoda will do appreciated, i collect it tomorrow and dont want this happening again

thanks

What is in spec for the dealer will still ruin your tyres. You will need to find a competent specialist with good kit to get the wheels right.

i very much doubt dealers carry out geometry checks or have the equipment for this, They normally only have 4 wheel laser equipment.

I would love to have all my geometry setup but unfortunately is all seized up solid, and to top it off the sills are rusting now!

thumbs up for getting the right people on the job. had mine done twice at place I thought were ok just to get car back handling pretty crap and scrubbing the frt tyres

trucklord, I notice you're in Retford which may lead you choose Autodynamics in Sheffield. A word of advice, stay well clear of that place. They left my car with all the screws on one side of the undertray loose, 3 bolts in the sub frame loose, and they told me a bottom ball joint was nackered, which simply wasn't true, at 15000 miles it's still like new. The only reason I found all the loose items is because I went and got the ball joint checked, otherwise it could have been nasty.

I would agree with this. Got the dealer to do our twice and it just wasnt right - miles per tank dropped immediately from 480 to 400. Got the specialist to do the 4 wheels - been getting 480 to 500 consistently for many months now and the tyres are still fine.

Who did yours Fatbloke?

On this subject, does anyone know anywhere near Sheffield / Rotherham / Workshop or even a bit further away that have the proper equipment to do this, and actually know how to use it properly, and know what they doing when making adjustments to the car?

Most of the places that have the equipment tend to be tyre places, so you end up with tyre fitters doing the job and in most cases I'd feel more comfortable letting a chimp do it.

Cheers. Did they adjust the front camber on yours?

Yes, they do the full deal; castor, camber, toe.

Yes but did they actually make any adjustments to the camber?

The camber was the main thing I went in for, yes. It was so bad I could see it just by looking at it. I have a printout somewhere showing before and after castor, camber, toe and thrust and possible other things too.

Nice one, cheers.

Thanks JB - will avoid them.

My story is very long and arduous. So will leave for another day.

I have however had this done today - what on earth does it mean.

I can say the rear has NOT been adjusted because its seized up and ive been told i need new control arms and lower arms ( rear )

I have been charged the full price for the job even though the rears were not altered ? - is this normal.

Is the data target current ?

Some things in red - no doubt this is still going to shag my rear tyres ( and maybe front )

So 500 quid on tyres, 70 quid on alignment ( or not )

and still in the same position...

What does it all mean ?

HELP

Your rear toe and camber are still out, so yes, it will ruin your rear tyres.

Take it to an indie with a Hunter rig or similar and ask for an opinion in regards to seized components and if you do need to replace the arms.

According to the last main dealer I went to I needed to replace all kinds of suspension bushes, it has passed 2 mots since without an advisory.

Usually a good soak with wd40 and then some heat applied gets the nuts and bolts free so they can be adjusted.

Depending on the cars age & history the rusting may be covered under the Skoda anti corrosion warranty

Well they've sorted the front although is wasn't all that bad before. Had the fronts worn on the inner edges too? It didn't look all that bad to do that excessively Maybe the front and rears had been swapped over at some point.

At the rear the camber is a bit out. the wheels are leaning in at the top a bit too far. This is why it's worn the inner edges. The left toe is also a bit out so the wheel is turning inwards a bit at the front.

Thanks, The front tyres were " absolutely knackered "

I have never seen tyres worn on the inner shoulder so badly - completely distorted " saw toothing " I am told. I can get pictures tomorrow. The front off side was also torn , with big tears in the inner shoulder where you can see the wires inside.

The front tyres had 7mm and 6mm still left on them across the tyres except for the inner shoulder. They were a couple of months old.

The rear off side was saw toothed as well - I was told this was also illegal - even though there was also 6mm of tread across the tyre apart from the saw toothed area.

ALSO worrying is the fact that yesterday morning I had two new tyres put on the front by a reputable tyre firm, and they " checked " the rear tyres as well. I have the inspection sheet showing the rear tyres as " Green " and ticked OK.

They knew I was taking the car straight to Skoda , - Skoda refused to align the car at first because the rear offside tyre was ILLEGAL as well ! Wtf ! - So cost me another 250 quid for two new rear tyres as well.

So here I am , spend 600 quid and still have a car with knackered alignment, and four new tyres that are gonna be scrubbed to bits by the time I can get the tracking sorted out properly.

I am not a happy Bunny. :@
