October Track day @ Oulton Park Tuesday 8th October

Featured Replies

Some in car footage, last session of the day and the ABS fuse was in my pocket too, car went well, just have a few little jobs to do now it is home, like coding out the ESP and seeing why we have an engine management light on, probably a lambda sensor.

Federal 595 RS-R tyres were a great addition to the car and the GAZ suspension combined with the Eibach R32 FARB & RARB worked well, brakes were standard Pagid disks with Ferodo D2500 pads, these also worked very well and no fade at all.

With the ESP why waste time and money getting it coded out / reprogrammed, just take the fuse out when you track it, or if it's track only car, just put the fuse in for mot :D

Could do Cossie, but I have this thing about lights on the dash, I can handle one or two but with the fuse pulled I had 4 lights on and one flashed!

 Traction Control

 ABS

 Engine Management

Brake warning light flashing and bleeping.

I have found on vw vortex a guy has coded out the ESP with a few digits changed in the controller, MK60, I am going to try the same thing, I ran a scan this morning after having the fuse out and has logged all sorts of un-clearable fault codes, so a battery disconnection is in order.

It may well end up as a fuse pull if I can't fathom out VCDS

Yeh my mates cupra was the same, a million fault codes for a poxy fuse, he was the same, said it did his head in with all the lights on, but he soon got used to it lol :D

Have to say though, with the fuse out and zero interference, the Golf was a pleasure to throw into the corners, slightly tail light but controllable, once we have another 100 bhp on tap it should be a pleasure on track.

Yeh I was worried with the octy that the abs would be trying to cut in all the time.

But so far on R888's and A048's it's not bothered me at all.

On the Kuhmo's on the action day, I did have a couple of pulses from the pedal, but nothing that interfered too much, otherwise I would have ripped the fuse out on mine :D

Might consider removing ABS and ESP modules over winter, they are heavy and not needed on track.  I did not get 888 tyres because the were out of my budget, I went for 595 federals, these were half the price but were definitely not half the tyre, I would buy these again, good value for money.

My mate started with R888's on his cupra, and then changed to the 595 RSR's, he said there good, but he was never as happy with them as he was the R888's and advised me not to bother with them as he doesn't think they will standup to the way I drive (no idea what he means by that tbh).

So i'm unsure about trying them.

I am lucky you see, never had 888's so obviously don't know what I am missing     My car has to fit a budget and it aint £200 a corner for 888's.

Same as that, which is why I bought a pair of used rears for £75 with around 3mm tread left on them, these are as good now as the day I bought them.

I did buy a cheap(er) pair of new fronts (£300 the pair delivered), but these wore out on the first warm track day I did :(

Since then I have gone through a pair of part worn A048's (£150 for the 4 with a set of S3 rims), and now a pair of new v70a's that got ruined on the action day (paid £156 for the pair delivered, they were 2nd hand, but never fitted).

This made me Chuckle  :giggle:

Oi!  I do both, and I am equally bad at each too! :D

so i have, quite obviously, had my worst fuelly fill up ever!

The maths seem a little off though....

I filled up in Birmingham on the way up on Monday afternoon

from there to crewe on the motorway - 55 miles

a few miles around crewe looking for some food - 3 miles

Crewe to Oulton Tuesday morning - 19 miles

All day at Oulton - ?????

All the way home - 120 miles

so the only missing number is the track mileage

My odometer shows a 350 mile difference between filling up in birmingham and filling up again in Cheltenham

350 - 55 - 5 - 19 - 120 = 156miles....

Oulton Park International Circuit is 2.7 miles

I did 156 miles on track?! 57 odd laps?!

Either they flew by and i was going a lot longer than i realised or something is wrong

That said the maths give a total mpg of 31.1mpg, including a 70mph cruise up and 65mph cruise home.

terrible no? :D

I dunno how i survive.

Does make me smile when i consider that drivers of 99% of the stuff that was on track yesterday will dream of 30+mpg!

looks like you had fun on the track, watched the vid's, defo more corners and bends. maybe next year might venture on this track, glad you all enjoyed.

My trip computer told me this, so it's not going to be accurate, but...

I did 268 miles in total of which about 168 was traveling.

100 miles on track, 2.7miles is roughly 37 laps.

I'm not sure I did that many... but maybe I did.

Average cruising on the way there was 40odd, days average was not far north of 20. Petrol burning day!

so i have, quite obviously, had my worst fuelly fill up ever!

I didn't go as far into detail as you but for comparison, the Golf did 186 miles, 22 to and from the circuit = 44 and on track 142 miles, in fuel this means 12 mpg according to MFD and one full tank of petrol used at £80  so about 52 laps, this could be plausible.

I managed 120 track miles yesterday.

Was a great day glad Jason managed to limp home.

Wowzers - maybe it was that many then, I'd have never guessed that high.

Was a top day and until I find a better hobby that delivers the same adrenalin hit the costs are an acceptable part of it

now excuse me while I head off to eBay and autotrader search for Westfields and Caterhams

cheaper than a day at the Golf course as long as everything behaves on the car

great day! thanks for pete and lianne for putting me up, really enjoyed it, thanks to Richard for letting me have his booking!

this is me pete and jonathan in the pits!

I enjoyed the passenger ride in the mongrel before it broke, very quick, huge grip and great brakes! proper track car ;)

and thanks to james for letting me drive the golf 4motion, had to be one of the easiest cars to drive fast ever! even if he did have to keep reming me to change gears ;)

now I need to save hard or find a charity that will buy me some uprated pads and brake fluid... (oh and 4 track tyres!)

Your welcome Dave, but really, did you have to type that, my secret is out now, I feel like Nigel Mansell when he won the world championship and the first thing he said was, anybody could have won it in that car.!!

"thanks to james for letting me drive the golf 4motion, had to be one of the easiest cars to drive fast ever! even if he did have to keep reminding me to change gears  ;)"

lol.. you were still faster than me one you removed that fuse ;) (if not before! lol)

Your Fabia was still quicker than me.... given what we discovered through the use of Pete's OBD app.

I reckon some better brakes and I'd have been right behind you. I had to stand on them so early.

I have been to a few of these track days now and I have always changed my brake pads, Yellow stuff on the Fabia and Ferodo 2500 on the Golf, at the start of the day at Oulton discs were brand new, now they are rather grooved up, pads are aggressive but make a massive difference.

Ive just checked them out, i could buy a whole set of front AND rear discs AND pads for the price of front ferodo 2500 pads :(

Yes Dave, £150 for fronts only on the Golf, rears are standard Pagid pads, as are the front and rear discs, standard Pagid.

I will sell you my Yellow stuff fronts for the Fabia if you are interested? They have done, Oulton Park and Bedford How Fast open to offers.

But well worth it :)
