Paint repair. How much? or could I do this myself?

Featured Replies

Some tw+t scraped my front bumper last week. I was meaning to get it fixed but I forgot... then I went to the car wash and it peeled even more paint off. Now it looks like this. Any idea's how much it would cost to repair? Or could I do it myself?

Being metallic silver it's very hard to get a good colour match.

Perhaps one of the smart repair companies could sort it for you?

If not a body shop would probably paint the whole bumper for ~£150 I'd imagine. By the time you've bought the materials personally I think you'd be better leaving it to the professionals. But it depends on how fussy you are with the finish.

That's not a diy job. I would say just pay some one to fix it. Chips away is a bit of a gamble but there probably the cheapest. I recon about £180. Or it might be a whole bumper re spray about £250

I was afriad it was going to be above or around the £150 mark. It's amazing that a mark the size of a 50p can cost in excess of £150!!! I wsih I was more like my mate, he says to leave it as it doesn't look that bad. It bugs me though, it looks scruffy!

I have a scrape on my rear bumper which I keep delaying to get done sinilar in size to yours. Chips away quoted me £140 and can be done in a half a day.

Local body shop wanted £120 to respray and blend in. Or £200 for the whole bumper which he'll remove for this job.

Its the colour unfortunately that makes it very hard to DIY

Its amazing what you can get away with though with cans, you can get away with much more with basic colours - much easier to work with

For the price of a decent match paint at somewhere like St Helens, assuming you already have decent abrasives + some primer kicking about, it would cost sub £20 if you fancied a cheaper go first (1 can should be enough) although I think it would be very, very difficult with silver to acquire a showroom quality finish without plenty of time and patience.

The important thing is blending in. Oh and also people don't realise that the paint needs to be rough when you are spraying, you actually need to buff it lightly with 400 grit before you spray on top of an area. Also all of us tend to be guilty of trying to lay too much too soon, not move the can about smoothtly, and spraying far too clos too - and thus end up making the paint lumpy like porridge

If you need any advice on materials let us know.....one of my parents is ex 3m

If you aren't confident and aren't bothered on trying to save cash and love for the car comes first, get a decent repair quote.

My local (very good) bodyshop would do a bumper for < £150 I suspect, so I'd just go with getting it done there if it were me. In fairness it's going to be pretty tricky to just repair that part.

Meh!!! Pikey repair FTW.

I had a bigger paint peel than that on my rear bumper caused lack of hairdryer when removing this Skoda decal after some 2 years.
