So it would seem that my oil saga is coming to a swift end (hopefully). After reading some of the horrific experiances some people have had with dealers on here, i was expecting i would just have to live with the fact it uses a monumental amount of oil.

However............

Took my car in complaining about a misfiring problem, they ran a consumption test, and hey presto new engine being fitted.

I just hope that i dont have any problems after this, and i hope that the "oiloholic" VRS is now cured.

Good.

How old a car and how many miles on it?

In Todays 'Auto Express' No. 1278, Page 82, Buying Used cars. 'Pocket Rockets.'

They just continues to talk rubbish on the subject of Twinchargers.

They say. about the vRS

'Reliability isn't a big worry-Skoda has not had to recall the vRS-but some owners have reported high oil use and some cars required new piston rings, as on the Polo.

I have Emailed the Editor in Chief to ask when they are going to get the story correct, tell the full story on VAG dragging their heals.

Taking 2 years and engines now being replaced, and a bigger problem than they keep making out and that its possible on any of the 4 cars fitted with 1.4tsi Twinchargers.

PS.

The article is about 3 cars, vRS, GTI & DS3 DSport.

They say about the Citroen.

'Citroen has recalled this car 14 times so far, so potential owners need to make sure all necessary work

has been done before buying a DS3.'

What makes you say it's a "bigger problem than they keep making out"?  Do you have figures to demonstrate it's anything other than a "few" cars?  I don't...

edit - for example, my vRS has used <500ml in 7800 miles.

Sorry, only got,

3 years of reading on Briskoda, and other world wide forums on Twinchargers, and following Twinchargers in the trade & at auctions.

Following the stories and posts online

So no idea on total CAVE engines rebuilt and replaced since 2009 when the Ibizas Twinchargers had the problem,

but it is quite a few.

(percentages would have to come from VAG.)

VAG could easily tell us just how many though if they were to publicly admit that there were problems with 'Some' engines.

Hopefully  Auto Express might push them for actual facts and figures.

I have sent them the links.

But it is the nature of getting an issue with a car to go looking for help.  That means that forums such as this get populated with people having issues to an unrepresentative amount.

So it is.

(another member on here is keeping count from this forum of Oil Consumption tests, Breather Mods, and engines out.)

So there are faulty engines,

some rebuilt now some being replaced and some cars now out of Warranty.

No need to make a crisis out of a small problem.

Those on here that have rejected cars, sold on after having Warranty Repairs, sold incase they have problems will be the minority of owners.

But there is a problem and magazines like EVO, Autocar, Auto Express only mention High Oil use and Piston Rings,

That is my point about the 'Full Story', not being told by the Motoring Press.

'Honest John', seems to be the only one with a grasp of the extent of the problem.

Not that many CAVE engine cars registered in the UK from (2009 Seat) 2010-2012/13

http://www.howmanyleft.co.uk

(it looks like a little over 2000 vRS including ones with CTHE Engines)

So say there are only 20 on here that have been seriously faulty, and another say 40 that have never heard of or been on

this forum. that would be a good few.

But that would be conservative for the UK engine rebuilds and replacements out of 2000 cars registered in the UK.

Then there are the faulty Twincharger SEATs, VW's and Audis.

We don't really know the extent of the problem and certainly Skoda UK are not prepared to reveal any figures to the public. However, oil consumption issues have led to a huge number of posts on both this forum and the Polo GTI users forum. Here alone we have at least 76 Briskoda members reporting high oil usage with the vRS and reports of 37 engine replacements to date. I'm not sure how many Briskoda members own a Fabia vRS II. If someone can find out we can calculate the percentage reporting high oil consumption. People reporting low oil usage are certainly in a minority (I would have expected more people to have reacted with positive feedback if the percentage 'failure' rate was better than we suspect).

Honest John knows about the history of my car. He won't know about other Briskoda cases unless members have individually contacted him (he goes by actual user reports he receives rather than forum say so). However as George reports, he has picked up on the extent of the problem from his many contacts and is a more reliable source of information than many other quarters in the motoring media. The encouraging news for us is that the replacement engines appear to be resolving the issue.

Honest John's summary of the car on his website is as follows: -

Good: Great performance from buzzy 1.4 TSI engine. Very precise in corners. Firm but forgiving ride. Nicely weighted steering. Impressively economical.
Bad: Not available with a manual gearbox. Interior nothing special considering it's a vRS. Too many worrying reports of high oil consumption led to demotion to 3 stars.

I'd be interested in a survey of members who joined up BEFORE getting their vRS to rule out the joined-up-after-getting-a-problem factor.

For the record, my car has used 3L of oil in 13,000km, which is probably too high, though technically within VAG tolerance. The breather mod has done little, if anything, to change that approx 1L/4000km usage.

I forgot to add that in my count up of members reporting high oil usage I have only included UK cases (in the interest of statistics).
