Temperature sensor replacement

Featured Replies

Hi

I recently posted about the engine warning light on my dashboard, had a friend check it out for me and we are suspecting it is the temperature sensor in the car. Does anyone know how much it costs to repair this kind of thing? Whether it's from previous experience etc.. any help is appreciated.

Thanks

Dead easy to do it yourself. If its the 1.9 then it's on the right side of the engine by the air intake pipe. Unclip the cable (rotate it around so the catch faces you), remove the circlip, pull it out, you'll lose some coolant, quickly bung a finger in the hole to block it, get the new sensor, push it in, circlip and cable back on and top up the coolant.

It's a little 1.2, don't like risking repairs myself, not done one like that. Might get a mechanic friend to do it if available. Any idea how much it'll be at a private garage?

Thanks

From memory, the sensor was about £15 and labour should be no more than 30 mins and thats being pessimistic as it really is just unplug the old one and replug the new one. It needed about a cup full of coolant to top up.

There are videos floating about here on how to do it.

Thanks, just rediscovered it's the sensor 1 on the engine that's died not the temp sensor, any clue how much that is to replace? It looks around £70 on eBay :S

Sorry, I've only ever done the temp sender.

You must be meaning the Oxygen Sensor 1 Bank 1 - VAG tend to use NTK which is an NGK brand, maybe "buy cheap buy twice" - my advice would be, buy the correct NTK sensor, complete with cable and plug, for that application, or get VAG branded same part from local VAG parts place - all the VAG marques, well VW, Seat or Skoda will fit the same part to that model of engine. Find out prices, I found that buying on-line and with postage charges, it was just as cheap and quicker to get one ordered in from VAG. Price will be about £130.

Thank you that's really helpful. Also have heard that if bank 1 goes then bank 2 is likely to go soon as well, is it worth getting both replaced?

Thanks

Certainly not.  Who told you that the second sensor would be likely to die shortly? Someone who might make money from you changing it, by any chance?

If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
