Con fan not working at 1 and 2

Featured Replies

Hi

I have a Skoda Fabia 2003 model, and the fan is not working at stage 1 and 2.

The fan works perfectly fine at 3 and 4.

Earlier this year, the fan started making weird noises on 1 and 2.

I have already tried replacing the fan, but it didn't have any effect

Any solutions?

Regards

Have you tried the green resistor behind the glove box?

  • 2 years later...

Mines the same now, never noticed how long it's been like it though :D

I assume it's the fan speed resister but that's usually when 1, 2 and 3 stop working. I've never had just 1 and 2 before.

Anyone els had 1 and 2 stop and fixed it with the fan speed resister?

I had position 1 stop and it was the resistor.

Here's how it works. Switch shown up the top, speeds marked in red. V2 is the fan motor itself, which is directly driven in switch position 4, will work without the resistor pack even being plugged in.

N24 is the green resistor pack. It has a thermal fuse and three series resistors. Any of these four things can fail.

If the thermal fuse blows, only speed 4 can work. If  R3 blows, only speed 4 can work.

If R2 blows, speeds 4 and 3 will still work.

If R1 blows, speeds 4, 3 and 2 will still work.

^ So it looks like R2 has blown on his then?

Yep. Or R1 and R2. :)

Changing the resistor pack is usually a good time to check/change the pollen filter too. Lack of cooling airflow due to a clogged filter possibly being a contributory factor to the fan resistors failing.

^ Yeah, I think that's a big cause of resistor failure as they need a good flow of air to cool them.

I changed the pollen filter a few month back, it was awful then so it possibly didnt help overall?

ive orderd a new fan speed resister for £8 from ebay, if it works, great, if not... im not sure! seemed worth a try for £8 anyway

^ Mine was from ebay and it's been fine.

Def the resistor, got mine off Amazon...had a strange smell from it for a day or two and it needed a bit of adjustment to make it fit (did a post on it)

But worked fine since!

Got a link by any chance?

Down to £6 on Amazon now, not bad.

I bought mine from eBay around 3pm yesterday as my previous post above.

It's landed on my floor mat at 9:15am this morning, I'm amazed :D

If it works they will get some good feedback! Hah

That is pretty decent delivery time! i've noticed Amazon does seem to be cheaper than ebay these days (saved 7 quid on a kids slide the other week).

as per the post i linked you too, check the old part vs the new regarding that clip. I was messing around for ages with it, especially as there isnt much room to work in (and i have tiny girl hands), where as an original 2nd hand part went straight in ( But being second hand it failed after around a year/18mth)

Yeah I'll be sure to check them before fitting. Picked up the pollen filter before as well so will change them both at the same time then move onto the leaking rear doors.

Wow, that's amazing! :o

Not even a local business either, over 150 mile away according to google maps...

Will update Friday with a few pictures probably providing the weather isn't really bad.

Fitted and fixed :)

Mines been the same, I took this on board so had all the doors and windows open when I first put it on, left it on each of the settings for five minutes so the smell would go, was clear by the time I'd cleaned my tools up and took it for a test drive.

Noticed it very slightly again this morning but again left it on each setting for about 10 minutes with the windows wide open.

I'm hoping that's the smell all gone. It's not a bad smell as such either btw :D
