1.6TDI CR 4x4 vs 2.0TDI CR 4x4

Featured Replies

I am looking to downsize from my Freelander, and have settled on the Octavia Estate 4x4.  My dealer has offered me more or less identical finance deals on the 1.6TDI and the 2.0TDI.  Are there any thoughts on which to choose?  I know about the different VED rates, and the slight difference in EU fuel economy figures.

Is the 1.6 powerful enough?  I'm not a boy racer, but do live in a town with many biggish hills.  I took a 63-plate 1.6 out for a test drive, today, and found it fine, if a little sluggish, but that was on the flat.

All advice gratefully received - and many thanks in advance.

2.0 absolutely 100%

2.0 unless you generally travel alone and don't plan on loading it up.

Personally the 1.6 may seem OK, but I;d regret not getting the 2.0 every time I got to a hill or stuck a bit of weight in it.

1.6 for better economy, 2.0 if you're a boy racer. Often wish my Scout was a 1.6, don't think it's ever got over 2k rpm in its life. But alas the Scout is not available in a 1.6, maybe they'll offer the option in the mk3?

I'm not a boy racer, (except for when I'm in my Merc!), but do wonder about tackling the Lincolnshire Wolds loaded up with a 1.6.  To be fair, most of the time, I probably would be travelling one up without a load, but there will be times when there will be 4 people on board, a keyboard, a heavy keyboard amp, various music stands and other accoutrements.

I'm OK with the 2.0 lump in the Scout but its still not a fast car: 10 sec 0 - 60 is fairly pedestrian. I only really want more on fast dual carriageways where some more acceleration out of roundabouts would be welcome. That said it never really struggles and will happily pull away in second etc if required. I also like its low first gear and ability to creep along on snow etc on tick-over. For me, plenty of torque suits the car as a really useful poor road load carrier - I wouldn't want less.

Boy racer lol, since when is a 140 Octavia a boy racers car. Anyway to answer ur question is obviously the 2.0

1.6 engine has a better economy, but the 2.0 engine is much more fun to drive ... So I vote for the bigger engine.

I dont see any 4x4 octavias on the Skoda website, price list or configurator :(

Its only available on the SE estate.

I would go for the 2.0 a less stressed engine is a happy engine, performance aside.

Yes, you have to choose SE estate and then spec the choice of engine with 4x4 after choosing the trim level.

I don't agree,to me the 1.6 is a myth. The difference between both on fuel is nothing.

have to agree - been discussed here many times. I am expected to get better mpg from my 2.0 when I get it on 20 Sept than the 1.6

Many thanks, all, much appreciated. Looks like the 2.0 is the way to go.

The 1.6 was sluggish on the flat without any load in it.  It'd be woeful on a hill with a load.

2.0 every time

Decision made: there's a 2.0 4x4 estate in some kind of Grey (not Steel Grey, but not in the brochure), somewhere in Britain with my name on it!

Many thanks: can't wait; it will be my first new car since 1991!

Absolutely the right decision! Mine is the same spec, waiting somewhere in Grimsby to get picked up by a transporter!

I'll be in Grimsby, tomorrow, and my dealer is within sight of the VAG storage compound!

Many thanks to all for their advice.  I went for the 2.0 TDI CR in the end, and picked it up yesterday.  Taking it onto the dual carriageway leaving the dealer (alongside various VAG cars waiting on Grimsby docks), the extra power of the 2.0 compared with the 1.6 that I test-drove was immediately apparent.  I'm happy with my choice!

I was at my dealer (Gordon Lamb) yesterday to buy/pick up a set of rubber floor mats for the car. They are great by the way for this weather. Even got 10% off. anyway, I mentioned to them that a few days after I picked up my car back in Sept, I saw an identical steel grey 4x4 as mine in the forecourt, un-plated. This would have been about 7th or 8th Sept. I was told that it was one of the two they had pre-ordered for demo in readiness for the winter. One was sold to me, this was the second one which, much to the annoyance for my sales chap, was sold/transferred to another dealership. I was just wondering if this became your car. The timing was about right

know of at least five 4x4 demo's currently for sale and three are 1.6tdi. Which now seem to have 6 speed gearboxes going by the photo's early ones had five according to SUK.
