Ashamed to buy a Skoda?

Featured Replies

I don't feel I should be....but the guys at work just scoffed that I choose to spend £28,000 on a new vRS loaded with options over something more 'upmarket'.

I feel I've bought an amazing car - certainly the most high tech I've ever owned.

Terms like 'value for money' or 'more car for your cash' just don't seem to cut it for bragging rights. Ignorant people just hear Skoda and write it off as a boring budget car.

I believe a new vRS *is* something brag about but clearly I'm having difficulty articulating that. Sticks and stones and all that but you know what guys are like.

Is it just me or is there still a stigma with Skodas?

  • Skoda isn't a car brand to brag about -if it were, the cars would cost more. Owing a Skoda is something you should feel quietly smug about.

Ignore them,,,  I went from a 5 series to a Yeti, I also got the comments like you have but I gave them the keys to go and look. Even our MD with his A6 was miffed as I have touch screen telephone, leather, xenons, 170 tdi and all wheel drive with a lower taxable value than him.

So who is laughing now? Skoda all the way for me, another will be ordered next summer too.  Enjoy your VRS and don't worry about what others think as they are not driving it and do not know what they are missing.

When I told my wife I was looking at Skodas for us she scoffed - and she's not even a car person!

I think the stigma certainly exists but once she got in one and we test drive a number of other "upmarket" ones, she was convinced that this was the best choice.

Lol

exactly the same as my wife! IT seems to be a 'women thing' that they dont like the word 'Skoda'! since driving our Octavia and now our Monte and she loves it.

the number of people who see my car (the Monte estate) and stunned by it.

the name 'SKoda' still has that tarnish against it from years ago. but when people stop and look they soon realise there worth every penny!

No doubt Skodas are very good cars nowadays; well cut price VW's are always going to be half decent.

the problem is they are not so cut price anymore. 28k does buy a heck of alot of nearly new premium metal now; you could debate nicer cars than a new Octavia vRS.

When you think the most expensive standard vRS Mk2 could be had for 20k it does make the new one look expensive 0% or not.

im nor sure ill buy another unless theres value for money to be had.

My 12 year daughter calls it a granny car and broke down in tears when I told her we were getting a VRS Estate. My 9 year son likes it, and the shape is growing on my wife (but it has to be Race Blue or else it does not meet her approval).

When I went into the bank to transfer money around in order to buy my skoda, the young teller was very interested that I was spending so much on a car until I told her it was a skoda and after a wide eyed stare in disbelief, she said "I didn't think they made any cars that cost that much"

I smiled and waited for the transaction to complete before telling her she had not even transferred the full amount it will cost.

Quite satisfying but if I had said an audi I wonder if she would have given me her number,,, haha

So what would they spend £28k on?

You usually find those that scoff at Skoda's are uneducated where cars are concerned. I have had it in the past and concluded that these kind of people believe that a BMW or Mercedes is all that because they read it somewhere, or their mate's got one, and their mate is just so cool!

You have bought a great car, you are pleased with it, that's all that matters.

It is your pride and joy and enjoy it as much as you can!

Well, to be fair that kind of money is not in either "value for money" or "more car for your cash" ballpark in my opinion.

Yes, it's a VRS, but it's a tweaked large family car from a mainstream manufacturer... For nearly thirty grand!

Good car, but not cheap any more.

Funny to see how subjective people can be and how marketing "inception" techniques can so easily works. Here in algeria, all VAG brands share the same showroom: VW and Skoda in the middle, Audi in the right wing, Seat and... Porsche in the left wing. From the beginning the algerian VAG importer positioned all his models as upmarket in terms of prices and equipment vs. French and Asian cars. Seat or Skoda are really not a kind of shame badges mainly because they started to be imported here in early 2000', far later after VW has put all their "German" influence in their design. In algeria we don't have Skoda jokes although we know a lot about Lada, Yugo or Dacia

I've come across this from friends and colleagues but I just plan on getting the car, let them look and then listen for the back tracking. A guy I work with said "oh don't get one of them, their s***, you may as well get a Lada" when I retorted that he only drives a Ford and an 8 year old one at that (Mondeo ST) he said "well it might have a Ford badge but it's really a Jaguar" this from a man that can't accept Skoda is a VAG brand.

I think my VRS is well equipped (with my extras as well) compared to just about any other model from any other brand. At just under £27k less discount taking it to just over £24k, plus 0%, plus free servicing, I think it's a bargain, compared to any similar size and spec car, including BMW's, Merc's, Jags and of course it's VAG cousins. I'm sure when I looked at Peugeot 508's about 2 years ago for the same spec (not even as much kit) I've of had to buy the GT at some where around £32k

Once people see it I truly believe that if they pick fault with anything it'll be something that doesn't matter, i.e. the false exhaust (mines a TDI).

I discussed getting this car with a friend of mine and it was actually funny how defensive he got over his BMW :-)

a 27k one at 24k is more like it

Greenstripe's on the mark here, especially with the vRS.

I've just done my IAM and both my observer (who has a 3 series petrol BM) and the examiner (ex Motorway cop) were both seriously impressed with the old gal, even with an worn out old nut behind the wheel.

A ride in the passenger seat would soon shut them up (well those that knew anything about cars) the rest arn't worth bothering with TBH. Let them carry on in their own biggoted little world.

My only reservation with the mkIII vRS is the price which starts to get expensive once a few 'extras' are added that will be worth little or nothing come trade in, so what might seem good value now compared to other new cars might not be in the long run.

Some of the posts above yours, Richard, have some merits but you're right. The VAG groups 'budget brand' is now not as 'budget' as it was. IMO people have cottoned on to the truth; it's a VW inside. And VAG know that we know, so have begun to price accordingly.

In the '70s, people who flew Concorde were asked how much they thought their flight from London to New York cost. They all overestimated as the flights were booked by their P.A.'s. BA put the price up accordingly.

Not sure I'd pay £28,000 for a Skoda, but then again I can't see myself spending that sort of money on any car.

the same BMW spec'd the same was 43K. Had cash for both, got treated like **** by BMW had some of the best customer service so far from my skoda dealer. I got a speculative call last thursday saying your cars 10 days late but dont worry come and collect a loan car to tide you over until then. Need to say anymore?

Basically I don't give a monkey what other people think. Let them bathe in their ignorance. If anything, it's attitude like this that will help keep the price of Skodas "reasonable"!

The Skoda is the smart petrol heads car, you're getting the quality of a VAG car at a price that is still cheaper than the equivalent Volkswagen.

End of the day, apart from the body and few other things the MQB cars are virtually the same underneath. Why pay more for a badge?

The Skoda is the smart petroldirty diesel heads car,

FTFY :)

I have occassionally amused myself by visiting the very sumptous BMW and MB showrooms in my seriously scruffy everyday cloths and looking at suitable cars, enjoying the coffee, and remaining quietly amused at the distaining looks.

I got better things to do with my money than flaunt it seeking others admiration

I always do the same thing and turn up in joggers and t shirt. I never get bothered by them unless I want to be and I get to find out what they're really like, will they still treat me well even if I look like I can't afford a bag of crisps. I once went to the Rolex shop in Carlisle in the same attire to get my watch serviced and they ignored me even when I was speaking to them trying to get some attention, "sorry we are busy". As soon as I put the nice green leather case on the counter they were all over me, sorry for the wait sir, what can we help you with sir, sir, sir, sir, thought I'd just been knighted. I've never been back there since.
