Sparkly's Mk2 vRS (now sadly returning to stock)

Featured Replies

Just a thought. When I had my lowered springs fitted the garage misrouted the ABS cable on the wrong side of the brake cable and caused a knocking sound at near full lock on one side while parking. Rerouted the ABS cable and noise gone.

Thanks for the suggestion, but earlier in the thread you can see my brakes went on the car only this month and the photo's I believe show all is in the right place.

I believe it's the Redstuff.

Next port of call will be to do what I should have done from the start and buy a different performance pad, most likely Ferodo.

Redstuff pads don't have the best reputation.

That's why people often choose the yellow ones.

Personally I like my DS2500.

Been running them on the Yeti for a while now, stock 312mm discs but about 250kg more to slow down so should suffer more heat than in a mk2 Fabia.

I am known for a bit of late braking too.

Still using the same pads after four track days and 6,000 miles.

Only thing I can fault them on is a slight queak just before stopping if I have not used them hard for a week or so.

It's a shame, I allowed myself to be lead on by talk of improved formulas and low dusting, which in hindsight seems foolish, and officially the Reds are rated to 750 degrees C and the Yellows on 900 degrees C so not a lot more.  But I should have followed advice on here and gone for some Ferodo's/. But hey you live and you learn.

The red's for the four sessions I did performed admirably and gave zero fade only getting better as the day went on, I am looking forward to see what they look like coming out of the caliper.

Totally understand the comments on the Yeti and DS2500 (and late braking) I have read that the design of the LCR Brembo caliper doesnt facilitate heat escaping very well so can be coaxed to running very warm, this could have had an effect.

You live and you learn :)

jusr remember the ferodo's are NOT road legal, and the yellowstuff, are..... two track days on my yellowstuff so far without issue.....

I REALLY don't think its likely to be your brake pads causing a clunk..... unless they have been incorrectly fitted.

DS2500's are only legal on certain cars ;)  those are Ferodo's words.

I think as above Dave the 288's and 312's although they may not offer the ultimate clamping force on the disc, from my reading probably dissipate heat better than the Brembo's which will be in their favour.

But yes, road legality was a factor in my initial decision on the Reds.

part in bold above does concern me.

So here's the pads, who thinks they are goosed, who thinks they will be ok?

Not as bad as I was expecting, all the warping and bubbling was just powdercoat paint

Next to the pagids I put back in

Oh and my clonk looks to be a top mount and bearing

Mercifully simple

They are ok, I would rough them up and use them for road use.

As for low dust..... rubbish.   If a pad is going to stop effectively then it has to rub away against the disc, I run the DS3000 in the Golf and after a track day the alloys are black dusty but by christ do they stop you!  Even when cold they have a good grab.

As for road legal and not, I am of the opinion that I have never seen the brake pad police nor have I ever heard of anybody being asked about what pads you run, if you do use Ferodo's they are black and do not draw attention to your brakes.

BTW, did you declare your Brembo's to the insurance company?

  • Author

Yup, all my mods declared. I'm with CKI who are looking after me very well in that respect.

The brakes were declared ahead if me fitting them when I did my renewal.

Thanks for the help James

pmsl @ "brake pad police" ... wont be long I'm sure!

pads look ok to me sparkly ... no disintegration..... its when the material falls apart there is a problem!

Ok guys so speaking to Alex @ AKS tuning (who is only just still talking to me after having Matty/Slotty harassing him :) )

I have the choice of replacing top mount bush and bearings with OEM option, Seat LCR bushes and bearings or go adjustable top mounts.

I am also going to at least get the Vibratechnics dog bone mount done, maybe go the whole hog and get all of the engine mounts RHS/LHS and Dog bone done at once.

And if I am doing that, I really ought to consider just driving down to AKS in Bedford and getting him to do the lot alongside a full superpro suspension bush set and alignment.

W'uh oh! :o

At least its something you can upgrade rather than replace :)

Are you sure you want this Mark?

I remember a guy in the Forum fitting a dogbone mount on a MK 1 Fabia vRS

It drove him mad with the vibration..he took it off

You can get different ones, they do a 65, 70 and a 90. I have the 65 and no increased vibration but can feel a difference.

I'd have thought the mk2 Fabia is way better in terms of vibration so an upgraded mount is less essential and if needed the transmission of vibration would be noticably less.

Plus it's producing a lot less torque than a tuned mk1.

you will have a proper track weapon before you know it  Mark!

I hope my "Shakey Diesel" will be OK once my SuperPro bushes are fitted (inc. the Dogbone one)...

Read few bits about the SuperPro and been told they loosen up after 2,000-3,000 miles so fingers crossed.

Exactly this, the 1.4tsi and 1.8tsi do vibrate less so the downsides are negated compared to looking at the dogbone bush or replacement dogbone on diesels, Vibratechnics specifically state you shouldn't use their dogbone on diesel applications, however I have talked with Alex a couple of times on this and this isn't an upgrade to bring in more refinement he believes reducing the engine movement will help engine response and feel and with the other mounts will sharpen up gear change speed also.

Plus a simple fitting so no great additional cost there.

So, owe a big thanks to Alex again at AKS for putting me in touch with David at Sere Motors Parts in Belfast.

I now have some lovely Leon Cupra R bushes and bearings coming my way to fix the top mounts. Part code 1ML412331

David is a fantastic guy, very helpful and good knowledge on VAG parts cross compatibility etc, worth knowing Sere Motors have very good pricing compared to just calling the local dealer too.

Glad you'll be sorted. You getting the full set of bushes fitted then?

Sounds like a result, nice
