Yeah I couldn't believe I won them for that price either, it was August though so not many looking for winter wheels then. He even said when I picked them up he was happy as the scrappy only gives you £10 a wheel ! I was just lucky I think.

However they are on now and a quick review. Firstly the ride is so much better than the 18" Continental tyres it quite amazed me how much so in fact, the change to a 55 section tyre just smooths out the bumps. The tyres obviously need scrubbed in a bit but they grip really well, only minus so far is the 55 section tyre you can feel the tyre roll a bit as weight transfers only noticed it on a tight roundabout though and normal driving would be fine probably. Noise has increased a bit but big block tyres with all those sipes was never going to be quieter in reality.

The Mrs car has had winters for 3 years, I have never bothered normally until last years snow when I nearly took out a road sign ! Not risking it this year.

I asked them why they had put the price up

This was the reply:

Dear *********

Hi, this is because we are out of stock at the moment and will be getting some more in a week or so, then they will go back down to the normal price, this saves canceling the listing. Thanks

What utter rowlkks!!

Why does it still say, "More than 10 available" ?

I bought my current winters one July.  Our other car, bought them in August.

Supply and demand simples.

Best time to buy rock salt is April 2014 £ 1 a bag for what is £ 4 a bag now and will be £ 5 a bag once the white stuff is here.

16" black vw sourced steelies + Continental TS 830 on yesterday for 3rd winter. Probably warm up now! Running at 2.5 bar

Guy's anyone know what are the recommended tyre pressures 205/55/16 winter tyres, are they the same as the summer one's I.e about 33 in the front 37lbs in the rears..

Not sure about psi but you need to 0.2 bar to the pressure. I run 2.4 all the way round on my winters which is 0.3 extra on the back.

Typical, now my winters are on the temp is going up to 10c this week !!!

Welcome to Britain... ;)

12 degrees C today in balmy Newcastle.

don't say we weren't warned. the Met office had predicted average temperatures and not much hard frost and ice over 2 weeks ago in its long term trend forecast.

I'd suggested not changing to winters in south until end November but still changed mine in mid November in North. all of this gives the anti Winter campaigners more ammunition in the big debate of pro and anti cold weather tyres.

Its always warm in London ! large cities keep the heat in and it is usually 5 degrees warmer down south anyway . It can vary between -2 and  + 3  depending how isolated/ less sheltered  on the rural roads around here

It is part of the problem with selling the whole winter tyre setup, because we can have really variable temperatures. As well as fairly significant regional differences too.

Colder weather due Friday onwards by the looks, with a Northly/Northwesterly returning.

I live about 13 miles west of central london and it has been colder in the mornings on my commute to work, and then again on the evening commute home, i had to scrape frost of on one morning. Looking forward to cold weather and the opportunity to feel how different winters are..

Got my winter tyres put on last weekend, o7plate Octy vRS Mk2 TSI,  Pirelli Sottozerro on 18in Zenith wheels as I can't be bothered fitting smaller wheels. Starting to think that would be a better idea. However, today (admittedly temp was almost 10degrees) road surface slightly damp got wheelspin, traction control lamp flashing in 1st/2nd and 3rd pulling off a set of lights and I wasn't really trying. I experienced this last year in lower temperatures , is this normal behaviour for winter tyres? Would have never got any wheelspin from the summer Continental contacts, can't help feeling that with the limited amount of snow we get that all season tyres would be a better option? What's everyone else's experiences when the air temp is above 4-5 degrees?

How far have you gone on the new tyres? Could be they just need to bed in.

Already done 4-5k on last Winter so not that, did have some similar issues with wheelspin last year but now I'm starting to think that there is something not right with the tyres

Something sounds wrong there, what pressures are you running?

Will have to check pressure but should think the tyre place will have set them to recommended settings, if they have do you reckon I should reduce them?

I wouldn't be surprised if the pressures are all over the place and possibly way too high.

Cheers, will check them at the weekend

I'm yet to understand this concept. You buy new wheels, which cost actual money, to replace your existing wheels which are free, to use during winter?

Then when the 'cheap' tyres are done, replace for next year?

So probably costing more than wrecking your summer tyres over winter?

I use sealant on the wheel. Protection done.

The point of winter tyres is not to protect summer tyres. It is to protect your car (and it's occupants) by being safer in winter, along with enabling you to continue to drive when there is snow around and cars with summer tyres start floundering. For the more enthusiastic driver you could also see the improved grip as a performance improvement over summer tyres in winter.

The complication is that winter tyres aren't actually safer until temperatures drop below 7°C. While temperatures fluctuate you'll have a few days when summer tyres would be better, then others when winters would be better. Hence the various threads about when to make the switch.

I'll be fitting my winters on Saturday morning.

Edit: Oh, and not sure where the idea of having 'cheap' winter tyres came from? Plenty of people run 'good' winter tyres just as they use 'good' summer tyres. Also, the reason for buying a second set of wheels is that if you don't then you have to keep paying tyre fitters to swap tyres over for you (twice a year), and in the long run it works out cheaper to just buy a second set of wheels. Some also have different sized wheels for winter, allowing narrower tyres to be used.

I wouldn't say winters are less safe at the kind of temperatures we generally encounter between November and March.

I'll post some links when I'm on my laptop tomorrow but I've definitely seen one test showing braking distances are likely to be better for summer tyres even at 7 degrees, for both wet and dry conditions.

I have never used a winter tyre in my life. I have yet to encounter a problem on British roads, where the use of a winter tyre would have been better. Nor have I ever been in an accident where I was driving.

Improved grip in snow is important and I do understand that for those northerners this should be take into account. However, as a southerner, when we do get snow, no summer or winter tyre will stop me from skidding uncontrollably in the snow. In the rain? Probably, but British roads are laden with diesel spillages anyway.

Maybe I'm a bitter 26 year old going on 40, but it seems like an awful waste of money. Just drive safely in poor weather.

That's my 2p worth anyway.

Fine...Just don't drive too close behind someone with winter tyres on.

I'm glad you think that you don't need them personally though....

Many people who are against Winter Tyres try to argue and fail to believe experienced user.

Some even say they don't need them because they get no snow, even when the facts indicate that that is just one reason for fitting them.

Some even say that they can drive to the conditions without them!

Good luck...It must be nice in Somerset in the winter...

No snow...no temperatures below 7C...No wet, cold roads

I must cancel my annual Winter break holiday and book a Hotel in Taunton!!
