First Thoughts on my VRS Estate TSI

Featured Replies

Picked up our TSI manual on Friday. Excellent engine and gearbox but I am struggling with the feeling of lane assist. Also not that keen on the sound in sport mode it just sounds a bit false so I can see me unplugging it (where is the connector?) Other than that love it. I can get a better driving position than my Merc and the power delivery is great all across the rev range.

However wife got home today to tell my she had kerbed the alloy! Grrrrrrr not even done 200 miles in it and already needs a wheel repair.

What was your strategy regarding running in?  ;)

Haha. I don't have one.

I don't think i'd use lane assist other than on motorway. Today it was very windy and the lane assist really made the drive easier. Sure it is strange...

I like it lots, it looks great. However, may I take the opportunity to remind you that 70mph is the maximum permitted. To help you out, i'll swap it free of charge for my 09 plate Citroën which struggles to do 70. I know, it's a great offer so say yes before I change my mind.

It looks great enjoy

Picked ours up on Friday and had a lovely weekend trying to learn how to drive again! Having come from a 53 plate touran diesel to this its a BIG difference.

First impressions.

Pulls like a double headed train, quiet, fast (effing fast), rides better than the diesel I test drove, comfortable (really excellently), xenon headlights with the turning function are superb, Bluetooth is brilliant (standard), first run was 25mpg (hoofing a bit!) a more considered run yesterday 36mpg, boot is huge, kids are more than happy with the space in the rear seats oh and it looks awesome in the race blue (which is now dirty :o(......).

So far no down sides. The fuel economy is a bit of a come down from the 45-65 I was getting from the touran but as my brother in law pointed out the amount of money I saved on the car over the diesel plus the dpf worry (only do three miles to work and back most days) will outweigh that.

Mega happy.

The very reason my wife has her own car and has never driven mine, she has curbed her alloys a few times now.

Just out of curiosity - how hard does the ACC actually brake? Will it go from doing 70 to 20 if needed? And if yes, will the car with the fossile gearbox (read: manual) just stall or is there some kind of a assist for not stalling?

Good question. I have not tried it in that sort of situation yet. It will drive in 6th at 30 mph anyway. I've only used it between 50 and 90, so all the deceleration was quite smooth. I was very surprised how well it worked on the motorway. I came from a DSG, so was curious too.

Well it can't put the clutch down to if you go slow enough it can only either stall or switch off the ACC and force the driver to take over....

it will flash that you need to break then disengage leaving it up to you!

Good to see you're enjoying your new car Jake! We shall have to arrange our 'team skoda photo' once my vRS hatch turns up on Saturday ;)

Thing is the vRS is her car!

WIth the DSG the ACC will brake as hard as it is needed. I got slowed down quite quickly when I was doing 140 km/h down to 80 km/h when a complete idiot switched lanes without checking his mirrors. And it is capable of bringing the car to a complete stop as well.

I don't know about you guys, but my DSG is still in 4th at 30 mph. No way would it be able to keep the car in 6th. The rpms are quite low as it is.

Well I hope she has many enjoyable miles in her new car.

Had my vRS TSI a week, though it was a demonstrator registered in July and has now done 5k miles. No running in for me then. Lovely car compared to my old 1.8T 4x4 Mk1. One small thing I do find weird is the reflection of the chrome door pulls in the door mirrors. Makes it quite hard to see the mirror view through that reflection sometimes. (Must try the Eco mode myself as this might make the throttle pedal a bit less sensitive than Normal or Sport.)

I am assuming this is a humerous posting

Ho Ho Ho Merry Christmas

Thank you, when I saw your post Oldfellah I realized I was not the only one.

I have the same problem with my Rapid, a large shiny silver L shape tick appears in the both nearside and offside door windows exactly where you look at the door mirrors.  As looking in these mirrors is an action you do automatically it is quite a problem as you have to change focus to look through the silver reflection.

Experiment shows me that the reflection is actually from the chrome trim arround the air vents.  I'm still toying with options, the ideal would be to replace the chrome bezel with a black one found on other spec. cars, but I would not want the dashboard taken apart as there are no marks or squeaks as it is now.  Second is the carefull application of some black tape cut to shape but I suspect it would be difficult to do this without making it look a bodge.  It would be interesting to know if Oldfellah and I are the only ones to see this and especially if anybody has solved it.

I've noticed the same on my estate. Not much can be done about it, other than replacing the chrome trim from the air vent with something else.

You're absolutely right: it's the trim on the lower edge of the air vent. I had a passenger in the car this morning and she was able to do the experiment properly - which clearly I hadn't. Glad there are some black trims available if I get really paranoid about the reflection, but meanwhile I might just try the black tape and see whether I prefer that to the reflections. At least I now have choices eh?!

  • 2 weeks later...

Putting black tape on the vent surround certainly does the business. Not a very sophisticated addition to the dash of my new car, but better than annoying reflections and totally reversible if required. Chrome finisher on vent control "knob" still makes a very small appearance in the door mirror but hardly noticeable.
