Hi All

After a few years of great motoring in my Octavia 1.6TDi , I through in the towel and bought a Yeti 2.0TDI in Elegance trim leather heated seats etc . Absolutely love it after a month or so of motoring , I have taken it really easy and find i am returning around 40mpg on mixed runs and 20-30 mpg on short town runs. The Octavia used to return the same however i drove it , how about the Yeti do many of you give it a good thrashing does it really need one and how much notice do you all take of the gear change warnings  ?? Sometimes i wonder if its better to drive it at much higher revs to give the engine a bit of a work out ?

Thanks in advance

Andy

Hi Andy :hi:  First question: is your SM new, or what mileage?

Avoid cruising at 70+ to preserve mpg figures.

I rag mine when the roads/traffic permit - it's a hoot!

All those poor A4/BM 'execs' with crushed egos :)

It's the youngsters in their hot hatches that I enjoy surprising - especially if they manage to get beside me again and realise that I'm not quite in their age-range

Ours is DSG, AWD.  Mrs Gnomeface drives it frequently on short journeys round town;  I tend to drive the longer journeys when we use this car and normally set cruise to 80 or 85 on dual carriageways & motorways (true speed is a bit less than this, of course).  12,000 miles from new and overall average is 36.8 mpg (true figure, not from the car's computer).  Never been aware of the DPF.

What I find interesting is the comparison with 15-20 years ago.  I had a Mondeo 2.0 petrol and covered 80,000 miles in it, admittedly a higher proportion on fast roads but I rarely drove at less than 90 on them.  Overall mpg was 34.8 - not far below the Yeti.

Very good figures, If you have DSG.

My Yeti is the same as yours (2.0 liter dsg tdi AWD) and my true consumption over more than a year is 14.19 km per liter, which is about 40 mpg. Mixed runs.

I was sure my mpg would improve over time.

Wishful thinking.

But all must admit,40 mpg mixed runs for a 2.0 liter is not bad at all, dont you agree?

When at work I have a 96 mile round trip commute, on poor cross-country Welsh A roads. I drive "to make progress" but at the same time to be economical, so don't accelerate harshly, read the road so that I don't need to brake, and keep (roughly) to the speed limits. On average I can easily get the top end of the 40's, and occasionally just into the 50's.

I average my consumption on mileage/full fill and have kept a log over the 70k+ miles I've had my Yeti, which comes out at just under 46mpg. That does include several tows to France with the caravan and down to Cornwall several times, plus quite a lot of low gear work off-road doing radio on rallies.

On a long trip, solo, I rarely go above 70, more likely cruising on the motorway at around 65, and can easily get more than 50mpg then. I have found that 65 seems to be about the most economical speed.

My average is sitting at 53.1 at the moment, short runs to the station (9 miles) on freezing cold mornings it does about 45-48, runs up to Norwich on the A140 (30 miles) around 58-62. Long runs on the motorway are highly speed dependant, around 70 I get 50+, over 75 it drops to high 40s. I tend to short shift around 3000 - 3500 rpm. I get around 600-650 miles per tankful. It's much the same as I was getting out of my previous Scirocco 170 DSG, apart from the economy at motorway speeds which was better than the Yeti.

Same car as yours but 4x4. Over the 25000 miles the car has returned an exact 44.47mpg, accurately measured tank/tank. A best tank of  50.69 mpg and a worst of 36.63. Mixed motoring - short runs into and around town and longer A roads and motorways.  Not thrashed but not hanging about either!

Actual or from the Maxidot?

Is this the Maxidot reading?  If so, that almost corresponds to mine as its about 10% optimistic.  If its an actual calculation, then that is exceptional!

Is that a Revo'd 140 or 170 ?

Hi Andy,

  • My beastie is three and a half months old and has now done over 5000 miles.
  • Average mpg is a smidgin over 50mpg on a brim to brim basis.
  • Speed (set with cruise control) on continental motorways is 85mph and 75mph at home.
  • The maxidot reading is generous by 5% -10% depending on my average speed - it seems to be more accurate on longer higher speed journeys..

Shanco

Last year coming home from Wales Rally GB in mid Wales, roof bars on, dipole aerial and collapsible tower strapped on, all rear seats out, overnight camping stuff, cold box etc, poor weather - 100 miles at 65.2 mpg (on the screen)

Set the cruise control for 60 mph as mostly "A" roads - not hanging about though. My normal average is +/- 52 mpg.

I'm sure all the "boy racers" on here are responsible and don't really drive like they say :giggle: , but the fuel consumption can be very good.

It all changes a bit when on gravel/mud tracks, especially when in a hurry. No revving for me, I rely on the low speed torque and short shifts to get up to speed.

Currently those are Maxidot figures for a std 140 engine, the Revo map isn't on the car at the moment, I tend to base it on what I get out of a tank so 650 out of an average 55 litre refill gives me over 53mpg, which isn't bad. I usually get better mileage when the remap is installed, so that needs to go back on before I drive down to Italy in May.

My mpg is 'brim to brim' on a Revo mapped CR170. The Maxidot is way optimistic.....

Click on the mpg figure in my signature for more detail?

Just better than mine mate on sim'lar...

HI all to answer a couple of questions my Yeti is a 2010 I believe its a cr110hp and its a 4x4 has done about 25,000 . Notice a few people mentioning 50mpg + averages , dont seem to be able to get anywhere near to that driving it tame and keeping the revs down. Seems to be returning just around 450 per tank , though i am unsure on the actual reserve amount. Mind you that said 40mpg average in a 4x4 is still good , i was just spoilt a bit with the octavia ;)

Should i be adjusting my driving style in some way with it to get the 50+ figure , are there other tricks to it useage of things like heated seats air con etc etc ?

I currently tend to keep the revs below 2000 when changing up and stick to around 70-80 on motorways with occasional use of heated seats and small use of ac.

My last 110 was running about 47 average in the summer and 45 in the colder months, aircon on auto, SWMBO has the heated seats on all the time.

I tend to just drive it and push the revs up well over 2000 to get through the gears, once at the constant speed I use the gears to keep the revs at around 1500, any lower has a bad effect on mpg as the engine is working to keep you moving and out of its best power band, give it a try works for me.

Talking of torque, and going off topic slightly, are there any power/ torque graphs for the CR 110?

My 170 diesel 4x4 says it averages 53mpg, but in reality it's 47mpg.

Not bad, but I do have a fairly economical driving style.

Your surname isn't Winterbottom is it!!

There must be an interesting aroma of cooking flesh in there.

That's remapped ?

Encouraging to hear I might be able to coax some reasonable figures out of one then.

my 140 4x4 gets about 40mpg but it mostly crappy town driving, motorway runs it hit 45mpg (not really go above 80).

I was expecting better but it's not the end of the world

140 4 x 4  with 2000 on clock now settling down to around 43 - 46 mpg

Common sense driving but not holding back when necessary, live in a very hilly area so quite acceptable in my book.

Initial maxi dot reading about 7% too generous.
