Are fast drivers that hard to come across?

Featured Replies

I dont know why after 7 years of doing the road in question (A171 Whitby to Middlesbrough) its suddenly hit to me today, why am i always the quickest moving thing on there, regardless of what car im in.

Today especially, i must of overtaken a good 8-9 cars all putterling along, big beamers, Merc's, Audi's ect ect ive even overtaken Aston's, Porshes, M- power BMW's...why bother wasting your money on something with a big engine and not bother taking it over 3,000 RPM? I don't tear along it like there's no tomorrow but i enjoy my car.

I do the road around 3-4 times a week and some times more so yes i do know the road well and admittedly some people might not know it at all but i think i can count on one hand over the 7 years how many times iv actually had a challenge. The UK's attitude to driving is so dull..you should all be in G-wizz'es. Appreciate maybe at time they want to have a steady drive but it seems everyone wants to do this..all day every day :/

My first time in Germany we got challenged by a pensioner in an mid sized A4..this is what i like! Make the roads enjoyable!

I dont think theres any point to this thread other then a good moan but it made me feel better :D

  • It's either fogies in cars doing 40mph in an easy 60mph limit or eejit lads doing 85 on the same road.   It's a rare pleasure to travel up the road behind a driver with the same mentality as yoursel

  • I've definitely slowed down a lot in recent years, I can't be bothered with any of it. It always amazes me how you get some complete tit sit 6 inches from your bumper in a 30 zone on a completely clea

Are they always driving below the National Speed Limit for the road they are on,

maybe just driving to the conditions and at a speed they are comfortable at.

Some type of sticker should be approved on UK cars, saying the likes of.

'I am on 9 points and need to keep my licence, please overtake if you want, i will not be upset'.

or

'I have a car that can go fast because i want to have one. it does not mean i must always drive fast'

2,500 rpm on my car equates to 10 mph or more over the UK national Motorway Speed limit.

2,400 rpm gives the best economy and is still over the same speed limit, and it goes to 6,200 rpm

and is still 800 rpm below the red line.

PS.

I have the sound on my TV at 14, but it can go all the way up to 30.

Who said anything about breaking the speed limit?

After nearer 47 years on the road I can see what you are getting at, I'm more comfortable travelling quickly it helps me keep up my concentration. I often think that people who are ambling along are often talking, daydreaming or doing other non driving activities.

Anyway what I set out was to say thar the IAM suggest that you should, taking account of the conditions, "make good progress" and not hold up other Road users

I often wonder if my Fuelly figures are a result of my spirited progress, the figures are only for a couple of thousand miles thre trip shows 42 overall.

You will find as you get older it is easier to leave a little earlier and have a relaxing drive than to be on it everywhere, I too used to be like you, looking for next gap to get past the slow car in front, however I tend to sit behind the slower car now and watch the mpg get higher and higher unless they are really slow, I pass the really slow ones.

Remember better late than never, or arrive a live or a few minutes late are better than a lifetime dead and so on.

Be safe and drive to the conditions.

My dear i have always managed to sell my car intact and in not in bits.

I do get your point and like i said dont jump to the conclusion im a tear away, far from it..like i said no matter what car im in the fastest thing moving..including the i10 and anyone who has ever driven one of those will know its about 4 weeks to 60mph.

.40mph everywhere takes the ****

How slow are we talking? I've found myself slowing up a fair bit in recent years. Still like a good hoon but can chill and cruise along now, if I'm on a road that I'm not use to and it's challenging then I'd be a bit slower

Im talking 40mph on 60mph on open roads and less on country roads, no one just seems to enjoy driving over here

Some of the very best driving roads in the UK that i know are the ones that might also have cyclists, walkers, parked cars or sheep on them.

Locals usually know that.

Visitors or those out to enjoy that trip might well slow down as there is no need to hurry.

Just because you have a big flash/fast motor on paper doesn't mean you have to drive it like an idiot everywhere.

Quite regularly me and my mate go out in his TT supra, we both know its a quick car and will wipe the floor with many cars before the second turbo even begins to spool up, but the pair of us just tootle about in the car keeping on/slightly below the speed limit. Its always idiots in smaller cars who try and 'race' you or try make you drive fast in it and simply put, we don't even bother because its just not worth it.

In the summer ive seen lots of tourists in foreign cars sitting at 40 out on the open road, think most of them are mistaken in thinking the speed limit is 60 km/h.....

Have to say I'm with you on this one Jane.

My journey home from work includes the main A road between Bexhill and Pevensey.  It's a big road you could easily speed on.

I can guarantee I'll do 40mph across it on my way home (It's NSL), no matter what the conditions.  No point in even worrying about trying to overtake coz there'll be way too much oncoming traffic.  Some people are happy at 30mph on it.  I really don't get it.  My 17 mile journey can often take an hour.

Gaz

Got stuck behind a queue on an A road today

Must have been about 20-30 cars long

Sitting at between 35-40mph (road is nsl)

Nobody would overtake and were sitting on each others bumpers so had to do one of those mad 10 car overtakes that you have to do. Then try and squeeze back in as there is no room as its the zombie queue and then get flashed off mr road captain behind!

I absolutely hate driving through the day as ppl take the pi55! Id much rather drive at night when its quiet

I get this every day on the A5 going to and from work.  It annoys me immensly people doing 35-40mph and not overtaking.  I have overtaken 10 cars in one go once I got that annoyed.  It must have been a mile straight and they all just sit there like sheep.  If people actually overtook slower cars instead of sitting there like morons then things would move quicker and I could overtake just one car every now and then instead of having to find a big enough gap to overtake multiple cars.

...And don't get me started on people that flash you if you overtake them or if you have to pull back in after overtaking a couple of cars....

I love the sitting on bumper traffic,  20 cars in front,

i like to hold back waiting to see all the tail lights show as i just slow down naturally.

Obviously if you leave just the right safety space,. someone comes behind you, jumps in and then you follow 21 cars.

I feel your pain.  Living in Scarborough means I travel the A64 a lot and the 40mph brigade seem to be growing in numbers.  The nearest motorway is a good 60/70 miles away and getting anywhere is becoming more frustrating.  I'm not talking about breaking any laws, merely making good progress as Huwcymru mentioned.

Part of the issue on the A64 is when you've got a slow moving vehicle with a queue behind and the first few cars aren't willing to overtake, so you get a build up of frustrated drivers.  We went to Huddersfield yesterday and it took a good 40 minutes longer than it should because of dawdlers.  This in turn caused some people in underpowered cars to commit to ridiculous manoeuvres in their desperation to get round

I know that the fun police on here will tell me that I should sit back and chill out, but with three young children in the back our window of opportunity is limited.  If they are capable of convincing our screaming 2 year old that at least the MPG is better than it would otherwise be - feel free.

edit : I've just worked out that sitting at 40mph in a national speed limit is the equivalent to sitting at 46mph on the motorway.  Does this help our argument?

And it's people like these that are the cause of accidents, because you have someone that wants to make progress gets behind them and either there is nowhere good to overtake or a car coming so they can't and they get more and more frustrated until the point where there is a slight gap and they go, then bang. Because they were sat behind a slow car for the last 10 miles.

I stopped doing that road for that very reason..its a flaming nightmare!

To lad with TT Supra..my point exactly...why have it?! if your completely comfortable doing under the speed limit let someone have the car who will enjoy it.

BTW the smaller cars are always more fun FYI 172 cup :P

Now i regularly nip on, almost always, except where Average Speed cameras restrict that..

But 60 miles @ 60 mph takes an Hour,  30 miles would be 30 minutes,

& 60 miles at 50 mph takes 1 hour and and a bit more than 10 minutes, if you can have that average.

But we all know that.!!

I often have fun doing the fast trip, a good few miles,  then get held up in the last few miles and as i arrive, there is a vehicle or several i passed 30 miles before.

Ok, 40mph is too slow in good conditions and the road allows.

Why does he have to drive it fast everywhere? Who says if your car is fast you have to fly about all the time? When I'm on my way home from work I'm often in no rush so just poodle along the A5D at 55-60mph happily. Sometimes me and some mates will go for a cruise about in the evenings checking out the sights. Does this mean I should sell the Fabia/Octavia vRS' and buy some slow **** box? Even though I like sunday morning blasts and track days at other times?

Also keeping in mind i treat this road as a pick me up, i drive for a living, lots of urban driving which is completely and utterly mind numbing so yes i do enjoy a good blast everynow and then.

The A171 is a nice easy road, no real black spots and smooth enough surface..no reason to do 40mph in my opinion.

Fair enough not everyone knows the road i recently went away to newcastle and hit a few country roads on the way to the hotel..rather twisty and kept me on my toes but still managed not to hold anyone up

I thought you did Home Care and drive between jobs,

that is not driving for a Living,

but if you loose your licence it is a problem.   How many miles a week do you drive while working?

Ok im giving you an inch your taking a mile, im not saying drive like an idiot but jesus why spend all that money and not bother enjoy what the car has to offer?

BTW single turbo Supra's are the superior..apparently!

For work i have an i10, not exciting in the slightest hence why it stays on the tame side of things but the 172 Cup is for my after work blast and i use everyone of them French donkeys. All im getting at if people have no desire to progress in a quick fashion then dont have something that your going to let down.
