Are fast drivers that hard to come across?

Featured Replies

Ah yes, there's a stretch of road on the a31 in Dorset where there is this really long brick wall that lasts for a mile or so and there is these statue stags on the gate houses... I can't remember the name of the place though

I know where you mean - that's the Charborough Estate.  Not being clever - we looked it up a while back out of curiosity as we're often going to Dorset.

[note to self:must try to type faster than Lee!  ]

  • Errm, because it's the law to stay under the speed limit

  • It's either fogies in cars doing 40mph in an easy 60mph limit or eejit lads doing 85 on the same road.   It's a rare pleasure to travel up the road behind a driver with the same mentality as yoursel

  • I've definitely slowed down a lot in recent years, I can't be bothered with any of it. It always amazes me how you get some complete tit sit 6 inches from your bumper in a 30 zone on a completely clea

Charborough House/ Park. That wall's a couple of miles at least in total. Used to drive that stretch twice a day when visiting my mum. Sharp left catches a few out as there's a junction on it and people pull out without looking. 60/ NSL IIRC.

Went past Oulton Park a couple of years ago when I'm assuming there was a classics show of some description on, there were a *lot* of classic British sports cars around that way, it was almost heart breaking to see an Austin Healey's arse sticking out of a hedge about half a mile south of Cotebrook :(

Speed is evil, all those who drive fast are dangerous drivers, YAWN

There is a time and a place and not everybody is bothered about mpg, there is some of use that still like to enjoy our cars,

My parents live on a NSL A road and its great straight out onto a 60 road and can go for miles before hitting a 30 and its great, i now do alot of town driving and it drives me insane, plus wakefield councils answer to crap roads is just to drop the speed limit instead of fixing them (they save there budget for traffic lights instead)

I will admit i haven't been no angel in past but i've done abit of advanced driving and i think more people should do it as it teaches you alot

I don't know why people jump to the conclusion that everyone who likes to keep at pace are automatically tailgaters either.

If I cant progress safely, I will just hang back and join in the convoy. My car is essentially a 1.9 litre sewing machine, so most of the time I don't really have a choice in the matter lol.

Indeed. Only a fool ignores the two second rule. :)

The thing is the zombie queue of monospeeders at 40 tailgate each other.

When i arrive i keep a decent distance (at least double of the zombie train) i am certainly no tailgaiter

At which point some git in a BMW/Merc/Audi business barge overtakes you and fills the gap.

Yes then you fall further down the zombie queue!

The aim of the game is momentum! Try not let the zombies hold you up

And if you know the road size an overtake up beforehand. At corner exit is best if there's enough straight but position the car so you can start the move as soon as possible, giving good visibility of the road ahead but abort if there's oncoming. Also means you are less stressed about being behind a slow driver since you know there's an overtake possible ahead (or not) so you relax and accept the situation.

Jane, get a motorbike :)

You'll have no trouble finding overtaking opportunities and there's

always room to go as fast the current road you are on allows.

Job done.

A well driven car going fast isn't dangerous. A badly driven car going slow is. And all the shades of grey between.

One upon a time I used to think if I didn't get flashed at least once a day on my 55mile commute (all single carriageway) I wasn't trying hard enough.

I'm a bit calmer now but I don't hang around.

Only 4 overtakes this morning on the single carriageway A road sections of my commute. It's normally a bit higher but it was quieter than normal and when I caught a slower vehicle I was lucky it was near an overtaking spot.

Yes I see this every other day.

The one at the front is doing 40. The one behind isn't confident to pass.

Then the next one isn't likely to do 2 cars so he backs up.

Then the next one isn't likely to do 3 cars so he backs up.

and on and on.

I have on occasion passed 6+ cars like this without having to break the speed limit. they just get set in the queue and don't even look to pass even on 2 mile long runway straight sections. Usually the go slow convoy will then encounter a tractor and get bunged up even more.

I also get irritated at the gits that use my proper gap to jam their p***s extension into it and therefore gain 2sec on me.

...The one behind isn't confident to pass ...

... and probably driving a bmw M3, who then proceeds to drive right up the backside of car no1 getting more & more annoyed ...

It's not a race to see how fast you can go.

I always make progress suitable for the conditions and that means in good conditions on NSL roads 60. This is to keep traffic flowing freely etc.

I don't have a problem with the drivers who feel they aren't confident in going faster than 50 or even 40. I don't have a problem with most HGV drivers who stick to their 40 limit in NSL sections.

I do have a problem with the queue of morons that develops behind slower vehicles who sit right up behind each other so close that they can't see a safe overtaking spot. Not that they ever would overtake they just sit there refusing to do so. Once you have a few of these it becomes almost impossible to overtake safely. Or you end up doing what a silly women did to me on the A17 the other week and almost have a head on with me because she pulled a dangerous over take past multiple vehicles and a lorry. I admit she got a good blast of full beam for that while I was standing on the brakes.

They usually suddenly feel confident doing 90 if it means preventing you overtaking them.

Especially if you've just woken them up from their daydream or seen them on the phone...

Have you even bothered to read though the thread and in fact the original post?!

No one has mentioned speeding, racing..well other then the ones who have the guilty conscience of doing 40mph when they could eaily be doing the speed limit

Sotonjoe is a monospeeder

Pays as much attention to the thread content as he does to driving

My vocabulary just gained a new word :)

Seen enough to know you're moaning about other people on the road not driving the same way 'fast' as you want them too. It's their road too and it's not a competition to be a fast driver. Don't start the thread if you're not happy to receive opinions that don't support yours.

Hardly. I just don't like people on the roads aggressively influencing the driving of others, whether that be trying to make others speed up or slow down. People will drive at a speed they feel comfortable with within the limit.

Taken from the highway code under the section using the road,

"169

Do not hold up a long queue of traffic, especially if you are driving a large or slow-moving vehicle. Check your mirrors frequently, and if necessary, pull in where it is safe and let traffic pass."

168

Being overtaken. If a driver is trying to overtake you, maintain a steady course and speed, slowing down if necessary to let the vehicle pass. Never obstruct drivers who wish to pass. Speeding up or driving unpredictably while someone is overtaking you is dangerous. Drop back to maintain a two-second gap if someone overtakes and pulls into the gap in front of you.
