Are fast drivers that hard to come across?

Featured Replies

Oh sweet jesus. Don't get me started on the 40mph everywhere crew.

Worst part is, if you dare question it, you're automatically a psychopathic speeder with a death wish...

I think that the relentless message that speed kills is finally brainwashing the mindless masses and they truly believe that they are saving lives by doing 40 in a 60 zone.  The flashes and gestures towards anyone that dare drive in a confident yet considerate manner are part of daily life. They are probably the same people that think that their DFS sofa really was half price.

By the way Emma, if there's a Whitby meet you can have a go in the Ignis.

Driving for work I've stopped racing everywhere/between jobs.

More and more speed cameras and vans about it just isn't worth it.

Surely if there are other motorists driving like the OP does you won't meet them because they drive like you do. The only time you do meet them is when they are completely stuck and thus indiscernible from the 40mph club.

I have a relative in the 40mph club who finds that "there are too many road signs and its too hard to constantly work out what the speed limit is", therefore 40 is a good guess. I suggested that said relative may be at fault and needs to pay more attention - it didn't go down well at all.

Finally someone has posted about a couple of my biggest driving peeves!

First of all the "45 mph club" tootle along a nsl A road at 45 mph, get to the village and keep on driving at 45 mph even though the signs are clearly 30. :@ (I'm not even going to mention the ones that SPEED UP through the village)

Then, the "flashing cause I've over taken you crew". FFS, I'm either in a 80bhp 3 cylinder diesel Fabia or a 64bhp Felicia, if you're holding me up on a 60mph road I should be flashing you to get out of the way. :wall:, if I'm able to overtake you safely in either of my cars then should you even have a licence?

If you're in a big people carrier, fully loaded with kids I can understand you don't want to, or possibly can't, drive a twistyish road at 60, but don't complain if I go past you.

lorry drivers are the worst for this. Just because they can't do 60 they think everyone else should be stuck at the same speed as them. Had one the other day in the outside lane of the m5 overtaking a lorry that was overtaking a lorry. Sat there for about 2miles with my main beam on to be greeted with a load of abuse when I went past him. Yet he was the one breaking the law.

I do very rarely though get the odd lorry driver who will put his left indicator on letting me know the road ahead is clear. If only they were all like that.

Another thing whilst I'm on a rant, ignorant tractor drivers who also seem to think they own the road and simply waft past pull in after pull in. They get my horn when I overtake (usually after overtaking every other moron who blindly sits behind the tractor without overtaking him)

You can't beat overtaking a couple of cars sitting behind a tractor!

I personally at the time think they will feel stupid!

But in reality they are probably calling me a dangerous driving ****!

You have to be carefull when overtaking these numpties as they very rarely check their side view mirror and are likely to pull out on you!

This thread is making me mad...... Argh

The thing is it is literally 40mph everywhere!

Even in a 30 its 40

I know, it's mind boggling.

I had a Peugeot do this (isn't it always?) last year. I overtook 4 cars and was about to overtake said Peugeot and one last van which was doing 40 in a 60 and out pulled this Peugeot. Forced me to clip the grass and luckily I kept it under control. Peugeot had boot full tot he top of the window, lights obscured with dirt, completely oblivious to what he'd done.

Another thing i've noticed!!

A roads that have overtaking oportunities. Dual carriageway on one side for say 1/2 mile....

Anybody notice the car at the front of the queue and the other 5 behind it accelerate :o

Mind boggling.

I've been following some of these numbskulls at 40mph. As soon as the section of dual carriageway appears they are upto 60mph!

Every single time

Well the road is bigger and so less scary. Also as it's a dual carriageway you must be able to go faster, it's like a motorway init.

I had it happen to me too. But it was extremely close. Slammed on the brakes. Locked up. Fishtailed and just managed to avoid a crash.

Car that pulled out carried on. Im guessing probably completely oblivious to it all as they don't look in their mirrors

It's a hard one to call without knowing the weather conditions, the amount of speed cameras or plod traps in the area and the amount of safe overtaking opportunities that are available on the stretch of road available.

I am all for enjoying myself in good conditions on a decent road where I know there are no police and heavy traffic. Somethimes though I just want to relax and listen to Radio 2!Just because you have a car with a deent amount of speed, it does not mean that you have to hoon around like a nutter all the time. It is just nice to know you have the power there in reserve when you need it.

Several people during similar discussions previously have told me that "mirrors are for reversing! Why would you look in them when you're driving along?"

The A road i was on today i can honestly say i was the fastest car on it, sat at 55-60mph for 51miles i think. I was catching up the 40mph crew like i was a red bull catching a marussia.

Anyways enough of my ranting and raving its not going to change anything is it! Roll on my next A road jaunt :/

Probably trying to conserve fuel given how expensive it is :P (the 40 mph mob). I know what you mean though. I was coming back to Kent from Devon the other week and the A303 is full of them. I normally do 60-70 on that if quiet but it is full of dawdlers and a lot of cams and speed traps now :(

Because the Supra is saved for being driven silly when on track or down the 1/4mile strip in a controlled enviroment. Your talking about a car putting 400bhp to the rear wheels with no traction control and no ABS, why drive it in a silly manner on the main roads and risk endangering your own let alone other road users lives just because you want other drivers to 'drive fast' and give you some competition?

Sitting a few mph under the limit isn't a crime, if you wanna put your own life in your hands by over taking in a stupid manner then that's your own choice. I've seen people do it many times on my commute to work and it gets them nowhere, 2 miles down the road and I'm sat right behind them once again

Rarely see anyone from the 40mph club with their ass sticking out of a hedge either to be fair.

Nothing upsets me more than people driving aggressively up the chuff of the elderly, young families, inexperienced drivers and anyone else with good reason to take it easy.

If it's clear have at it, if the road is busy, suck it up! Courtesy and patience are worth a lot and May one day save you from a misjudged multicar overtake that ends very badly.

Best comment on the thread IMO. Most of my driving is commuting to/from work but I reasonably regularly drive to/from my sister's place in south wales (with a subsequent round-trip a week or so later if I've brought her back to spend time at mum & dads) and the A49/41 is bloody awful for the kinds of drivers mentioned on here ... Most of that route between Whitchurch and Hereford is a reasonably well maintained road but passing places are scarce and there's almost always some sod doing 40mph slowing down to 30 for the bends... They're also the people who seem to insist on still doing 40/45 mph through 30 zones, only to continue doing 40 when they get back to a NSL stretch of road.

Rarely see anyone from the 40mph club with their ass sticking out of a hedge either to be fair.

Ah yes, there's a stretch of road on the a31 in Dorset where there is this really long brick wall that lasts for a mile or so and there is these statue stags on the gate houses, I think it's a big stately home or something, I can't remember the name of the place though, anyways there was a pair of idiots in an old mbg midget doing what big jase describes, doing multi car overtakes, and generally driving quite recklessly, he went past loads of cars, then there is a sharp bend to the left, and his luck ran out that day because an artic coming the other way made him swerve back in and he went through the wall a few hundred yards up from there after he nearly regained control. It must happen quite a lot there because there is often car sized holes in the wall or flowers laid out along that stretch, these geezers was lucky, they didn't die. But they did deserve to crash however.

Those that drive very slow can be a danger, or a perceived danger to those that want them to drive faster,

but they have a licence that allows them on the road.

So whats the point of wanting them to go faster, if they are thinking every corners needs brakes on, god help others if they did

go faster.

It is often said that Driving tests should include Motorways, yet lots of the UK is not near a Motorway.

Too many tests are In Town or City Test. Urban.

Maybe time it was done at a In Town Test Centre,

then an Away Day Drive in the Countryside Test,

it is not only the Elderly that can not proceed safely in the Countryside.

Your speaking to converted, i do Nurburgring a few times a year, UK tracks, my partner has a 997 GT3 RS, cars have been passion for many years and even more so my driving.

Yes we do track days but that doesnt say i do 40mph all day long on pubic roads.

A few people are getting the wrong end of the stick here (although many have got the right idea) its not about driving like a loon its about enjoying the road and not holding people up.

No word of a lie i came across someone on this particular road doing 25MPH!! This is what im on about, other then his car been broken (to which a set of hazard lights would of been nice) there is no reason he should of been doing this speed. Although many people will most likely tell me what the law on the use of the horn is as i passed him i blasted my horn at him to purely inform him of my rage

They are more likely to be in the local paper having driven into a bus stop or through a wall. Their cars often have broken/missing wing mirrors and lots scratches/dents on the bumpers and the wheels will look like someone has taken an angle grinder to them.

That said I agree about driving along 6 inches behind someone, there is absolutely no need for it.

Sums up the whole thread really.

Charborough House/ Park. That wall's a couple of miles at least in total. Used to drive that stretch twice a day when visiting my mum. Sharp left catches a few out as there's a junction on it and people pull out without looking. 60/ NSL IIRC.
