I've noticed recently that when driving my car from cold selecting gears can feel notchy/difficult/awkward, particularly the lower gears. Selecting 1st/2nd/3rd can be a bit unpleasant and feels like I am not depressing the clutch properly and the gears are reluctant to engage. Once I have travelled a few miles and got the gearbox (oil) warmed through things are much better with smooth, light changes just like it should normally be. 

 

Anyone got any ideas why selecting gears when the gearbox is cold is a problem? Because things are fine when the gearbox is warm it makes me think that it isn't the clutch that is the problem?

Both my Octavia's developed a stiff and obstructive gear change.  A change of oil worked wonders. 

This one needed the gear change cables being stripped, cleaned and lubed too - if yours has a cable change.

Make sure you use the correct oil.

Yes, the gear oil I got from the dealer was the wrong stuff. I contacted SUK and had to give the datestamp off the bottom of the gearbox which then told them which oil it should be. The dealer gave me the correct oil which I have now put in and all is well. They did say the other stuff should have been ok but there must be some difference with the different part number.
