I tend to think the midrange' date=' overtaking power, makes a car quick for me, if we are of course talking about 'average cars' and not sports cars.

0-60 aint that much use unless you need to nip out of a junction sharpish,

top speed is only of use on private roads ;)

so i go for the overtaking range to make driving backroads safer and more enjoyable.[/quote']

Pulling out from a side road onto a dual carriageway and accelerating flat our in TVR Chimera to 135MPH felt fast when I was 15 :eek: (I wasnt driving you'll be pleased to know).

Im sure we scared the person who we overtook - he had only just gone past us on the junction..! :rofl::rofl::rofl:

So I'd have to agree that the most fun, and what I deem fast is in gear acceleration... :thumbup:

I think "fast" should describe your driving skill rather than the car. As we say, "he is fast" mean "his driving skill is good and able to push the car to the limit". On the other hand, I think it is point less to say "that is a fast car" if the driver is crap (like me :) ).

had a go on a mates minimoto last night on an indoor karting curcuit, probably didnt crack 30mph but it felt waaaay faster!!

I'd say a high top speed is nice - and it makes it 'fast' imho.

The Rover 100 had an indicated top of around 3 digits. That's (too) fast for the car (and probably at least 15 mph overindicated, but never mind that). It feels like you're about to kill yourself, as the whole thing vibrates and the engine is revving its' little nutz off.

The Furby is quick at legal speeds - i.e. great for overtaking - without really having to do a lot. I'd say the same goes for most TD based vehicles, including the Octy versions that have that engine type. The petrol ones will be faster if kept on the boil and if they're able to stretch their (rev-range-)legs. Plus they'll pull away at FAST speeds, and usually have a higher top speed too :)

In fairness, most cars these days are reasonable capable. Engine technology has got a lot, lot better slowly but surely, and a 50 bhp engine is probably fine for a small car, 75 for a medium, probably around 90 for a larger one. If it's a torque-rich engine that will pull nicely, if it's a petrol perhaps add another 20 bhp or something to make it 'decent' performance.

Carting will feel fast as you're so close to the ground as well, much more sensation of speed (plus you can pull through corners faster than most things on the road).

As for bikes - different league as they have awesome power/weight ratios and as such it's like comparing a lorry with a mini-van. Both transport goods but it's a totally different beast.

Even a 50cc bike will pull away from many a car if tuned :)

With a 250cc+ it's just gonna disappear from I think all cars on this site.

A car that can do 170km/h to 200km/h in less than 3 seconds is very fast...645Ci tuned...

A car that can do 50-70 mph faster than any Ferrari in the world is very quick...535d.

For ME however, fast is a 0-60 sub-6 second car, quick is sub-10, like Mr. Devonutopia...

i would agree on the go karts.feels like 100 even though ur only doing maybe 15mph.the corsa 1.2 learner car feels slightly unstable :eek: above 55 which me made it feel fast.been in a octavia vRS up to 120(kph of course :rolleyes:;) )and it didnt feel all that fast even though i knew it was fast

I think what feels fast depends very much on what the car is capable of.

In my mum's Clio Automatic, going round a roundabout at 40 mph can be scary. Take the same roundabout in the FRP, and i can manage nearer 60 mph with no loss of feel or danger of losing the backend.... in the Octy, it'd maybe be a little over 50mph ;)

The Subaru website says 5 seconds (iirc) for a UK STi (Through the gears).

I timed just under 5.5 seconds in mine.

I beg to differ re: bikes... I've had quite a few friendly tussels with sports bikes and if I get into a situation on a nice A Road with a good balance of twisties and short straights, the only advantage the bikes have is being able to overtake in places where it would be suicidal for me to in the fabia.

If you take overtaking out of the picture, there's not a lot in it between my car and a decent sports bike on many of the roads around here (Peak District).

I'm not saying "My Fabia can keep up with a Sports Bike", because when you come across a decent straight, the Bike will leave me for dead, but round the bends (and there are lots of them around here), they don't get away from me in general.

I drove a modded Audi RS6 whilst at AmD, dont think ive felt that kind of senseless speed since The Kumba at Busch Gardens, Florida.

Just kept on going, god I loved that car.

Sub 6 seconds is BREAK NECK FAST! :cool::D:thumbup:

Sub 10 seconds is a good performing car IMO. I would say sub 8 seconds for me feels really nice (i.e boss' Saab Turbo / My car once finished :o) but 10 seconds is adequate (such as the Jag I'm using in sport mode ;))

edit: But IN gear is where it is at. ;) Forget the Saab doing 60 in 8 seconds, I like the way you can plant it in 2nd at 3000 and be at the redline bloomin' quick. :eek: But I love the diesels more for they pull that sort of power out the bag from much lower down in the rev range, but still to the redline. :cool:

Mate has a MKII Polo with around 400HP (No Joke !) But Engine is knackered at the moment, which happens min. twice a year to him. :D

I also disagree regarding bikes, especially as you say 250cc+

Any road with corners and the bike is at a big disadvantage even on straights it takes a 600cc in-line 4 sports bike to pull away. Stuff like 650 v-twins I can pass. Even 600cc in line 4's can be kept with on straights though once you get the wrong side 120.

Also you say all cars on this site, what about the JBS Octavia? 0-100 in 10s and 0-150 in 32s. Yeah not a worry for a litre bike on the straights but will give anything less a good run.

BTW I'm a biker myself and have been on the recieving end of a whooping from an Evo whilst riding a sports 600.

To me, speed and the feeling of speed is all relative. The example of airfield versus country lane earlier in the thread is a good example to me. I also find it differs depending on how far off the ground you are, how much information about the road is coming through the steering and suspension, and if the car has an open roof or not. Lotus Elise along the same stretch of road as you've just driven in a Lexus, for example :)

Another good one for me was my Uncle asking me to try and touch the dash of his '96 993 911 turbo while accelerating on a quiet stretch of German autobahen. Found it impossible from being pushed into the seat due to the force of acceleration so gave up :D You could argue that's much more to do with acceleration than speed, but with that car the two went hand in hand :thumbup:

The fabia vRS feels pretty fast for a modern car due to the thrust from the engine. In accelerative terms, the Golf often feels less impressive initally, but the sensation of actual velocity it gives is greater - lower to the ground, noisier, and bumpier :D

"speed" is a perception thing for sure - NOT what the speedo and / or stopwatch is telling you.

Take this Jag I'm using at the moment. Its pretty sluggish(ish) to 60, probably getting there in 10 seconds with it booted, soon creeps up though once the rev band reaches 5000rpm with the foot floored. However its on private roads it keeps that same acceleration down right through to 110+ (not been any quicker yet) - Whether thats the auto box and the fact the revs don't actually drop for any reason as would happen with a clutch? I know its "speed" yet I;m sat there in this quiet car, surrounded by leather and wood, classic FM [cough! :D] on the radio. And I'm not feeling any "speed" at all. :confused: ;)

yet when I went karting, 35mph with your ar5e only 2cm off the deck, felt bloomin' quick indeed! :rofl:

As I mentioned (I think) it really occured to me as I tried to compare the new Skoda with the old Rover; the Skoda feels very fast by comparison, but I doubt most people would class it as "a fast car" - it is all down to perception.

Perception indeed - like coming off the motorway into a downhill 50 zone and couldn't believe what the speedo said when I looked down :eek:

"Fast" though to me is having enough under the bonnet to overtake as required at midrange speed and anything less, by the converse, is scarily slow.

yep, all about perception, dont we move at a constant 67,000 mph anyway! :D

Fastest thing I've driven was my Scooby which did 60 in under 5 seconds and went on to around 150mph (allegedly). I realised it wasn't actually that fast when a Tuscan S overtook me and made me feel like I was going backwards, although had it been wet, and we'd been in the "twisties", I would have had him ;):rofl:

For me I thinks its acceleration not top speed.

Ride Rite is fast to me (acceleration). Well it was the first time after the third I'd got use to it. The day after my body felt like ****.
