Polo Oil Consumption...

It was registered November 2010.

The third service was done by ford before I bought it as it was ford I purchased it off. From what I've been told brake fluid Ect was changed then.

Today my red warning light came on, so I've now put 7.5 litres of oil In after only 6600 miles. This definitely isn't right.

I don't know whether to ring skoda and ask if I can extend my warranty or simply go in and ask for an oil test! What would you Gus suggest?

Nightmare scenario mate. I really feel for all those unsuspecting people purchasing used Fabia vRS out of warranty and then discovering a major oil use issue.

Did it to straight to a red oil light without the amber one coming on first?! If so then that's not good.

I'd phone skoda ASAP and find out if there is any history of warranty work on the engine or excessive oil use.

You've then essentially got three options in my view:

1) complain to skoda uk and the selling dealer and try to get an oil consumption test done at a skoda dealer. Push for some goodwill remedial work to try and sort the issue. Going to be tough as the car is out of warranty and the ford dealer won't have a clue about Fabia vRS oil issues and probably won't care less either. Did the ford dealer give you any kind of warranty you could claim on?

2) Try to sell up and move on. Keep quiet on the oil issues and let the next unsuspecting owner deal with it!

3) just keep topping up with oil regularly and enjoy your car accepting the small cost of the regular top-ups.

No doubt others will be along with some suggestions for you. Hope you get it sorted let us know how you get on!

Nightmare.

 

No idea what to suggest for the best.   So i will try some choices,

 

1.  Honest choice,

is back to the supplying dealer, do you have some Warranty from them.

They were not to know,  But still must sell merchantable.

 

2. On to Skoda UK Customer Services, get the Warranty Information on the car,  Raise a case,

Out of Original Warranty, but Skoda know they have sold 1,800 vRS in the UK with many of them failing.

 

3. Take out an Extended Warranty, then later discover your car might be using too much oil.

(too risky, you are posting on an open forum)

 

4.  

CALL YOUR LOCAL TRADING STANDARDS, tell them the story.  TELL THEM ABOUT VW, SEAT, SKODA & VW

Tell them about the Twinchargers & the Various cars 2009-2012 and the Oil Users,

MAYBE THEY CAN GET A SPECIALIST ENGINEERS REPORT ORGANISED ON YOUR CAR.

***That is if Skoda UK Customer Services do not want to do the right thing, & Get your Car Repaired.***

 

CALL Skoda UK Customer Services.  TELL THEM YOU ARE GOING TO GET A SPECIALIST REPORT ON THE ENGINE.

That is if they are not very very helpful and get on with having your car repaired,

The orange warning light did come on first but it stayed on for about 200 miles then flashed red at me!

There was a meesly 3 months warranty however I'm sure that consumer rights could stand on my side of the playing field here.

Selling up isn't an option I'm considering at the moment but will look into extending my warranty, if that isn't an option then trading standards is the route I'll go. For skoda to know of these problems and not do a recall in the first place is ludacrise. I know the car is out of warranty however that is no reason for the problems I am getting.

Why did you not top up when the Orange Low Oil light was on, ASAP,

You had about only 2 litres oil in the engine?

 

Red light,

'Low Oil Pressure'.

 

SKODA MANUFACTURERS WARRANTY.

You need to observe Warning Lights, it says.

I was on a long journey of about 300 miles, the orange light come on at about 20 miles in and I just thought it's be fine for the rest of the journey then fill it up, then the red came on near the end so it stayed on orange for no more than 280 miles.

If I was at home at this time or on my usual shift pattern if have topped it up immediately, i never anticipated it to go from advisory to critical on such a short space of time! Anyway, booked in for an oil consumption test! Let's see what it shows.

I understand,  

Hardly any other car owner needs the 1 litre of oil that VAG Dealers sometimes put in cars.

 

If Skoda, Seat, VW, Audi had done a Owners Manuals that had the Information Twincharger Owners needed,

or just a 'Update Supplement' once owners were getting issues,

Giving info, on Fuel, Oil etc.,   That would have reduced issues for many.

Not overfilling or running low oil.

 

The Owners Manual covering all Fabia Engines, petrol & Diesel,44kw, Cold Dip,

to 60,69,75,86, 105, 180 ps etc Hot Check,

& the Translation to English reads different in the POLO or FABIA manual.

Maybe talk to the Dealership Principle.

Or Workshop Manager.

 

Ask, can they do the simple check between now and then.

 

You drive there, (or drive there now and ask them)

You open the bonnet,  they dip the oil, check the level,

top up as they do it.

 

Then Masking Tape over the filler cap, and the Dip Stick,

they note the mileage.

**You do not touch it,  you drive the car until the appointment.

No top ups by you, or draining the oil.**

 

Takes them 15 minutes max, now. (less than 10 mins actually)

& in 2 weeks they will see the 'Consumption Test', is not required.

 

Tell them KISS is sometimes the best way.

HARD TO GET WRONG REALLY.

The 'Official Consumption Test' is not just a Top Up. Or should not be.

 

The Engine Oil & Filter is Removed,  

New filter and 3.6 Litres of oil (Weighed) added.  

Brought up to temperature,  Dipped Hot, Level checked as correct.

 

Oil Dropped, & Weighed,

Oil Replaced, & Level checked, MIleage Checked.

 

You drive 300km, or 600 km. or what thay are now saying.

 

Oil is Dropped, in the same circumstances as when first weighed.

They calculate the usage as if you had covered 1000 km. (621 miles)

Actually doing 600 or better 1,200 miles would be real world.

But they do not want accuracy or fact, they want the result

" only using 0.3 litres per 1000km/621 miles.

*You car is within tolerance sir, no problems!*"

 

There are variations.

Oil Empty, & Filter Out, and All Oil Weighed etc.

 

Then some Plonker has no idea that oil is 857 grams a litre (think its 1000 grams a litre so 3600 grams)

3.6 litres weighs 3085.2 grams at the start of the test.

But that sort of error seems common.

Like some putting in 3.9 Litres of Oil instead of 3.6. Not noticing they had a Weight of 3408 grams

It's a little too late so I'll give them a ring first thing! He tried saying it's cause of the bank holiday and all that jazz but I'll make sure I get it done tomorrow!

Hmmmmm, have a feeling I'm going to be going down this road. Bought a 2011 VRS estate with 11,000 on her, for 3 months needed nothing (Am wondering now if the dealer overfilled her?) Now on 16,000 seem to be using quite a lot, the yellow oil light came on a few weeks ago, 1.2L took it back to the top of the cross hatch, but a hot-check today showed that 400 miles later it's in the bottom half of the cross hatch. Will try a cold dip tomorrow, but the fact that the yellow light came on last time doesn't fill me with confidence. At least I have the warranty from the Skoda dealer. Don't want to pay for anything myself though, is it best to contact a dealer first or a garage. My nearest dealer is relatively new on the scene, and whilst they've done brilliantly with a couple of Toyotas my wife has owned, I've only set foot in their Skoda dealership to purchase oil. Maybe a trip back to the the supplying dealer would be worthwhile. Any thoughts from people who've been down this route would be gratefully received.

Sorry to hear this.

 

Do the cold dip. car totally on the flat.    

 

You can go to any Skoda Dealership.

But since this is so hit and miss even nearly 4 years after the first vRS went on sale, and 4 years since the first Twinchargers 

showed problems with SEAT,

best contact

Skoda UK Customer Services on Monday,  Phone and then Email.

 

Tell them where you are, and whats happening and raise a case, and arrange for them to arrange a Courtesy Car 

& any Actions they want to take.

 

They have so many cases now, that you going for a Consumption test,  then a Fail, & a Breather Mod, ECU Update,

Another Consumption Test and then a new engine,

Is just them wasting your time.

 

Maybe tell them to cut to the chase.

They know the problem, and they know what needs doing.

All interesting advice for using oil lol! however, just so you know, I drive mine very hard most of the time, do numerous track days, and go quickly from cold, ....

 

my last top up was 3,000 miles ago, and its still 3/4 full......

 

I believe these engines love to be driven hard, and if they are they dont use oil!

I made the decision to drive mine hard with only 7 miles on clock. Just clocked up 3500 miles now and not used a drop. I might use the next few thousand miles driving sensibly and see if that changes...

He's looking at getting me a sooner appointment and actually asked a few questions rather than say 'we'll have a look when it comes in' we checked that the correct oil had been put in at the previous service.

Next is the consumption test! I know the car is out of warranty but knowing there was a problem, surely that would work in my favour given I was to take it further? There's so many problems I actually think it would be insulting for them to do anything other than put this right for anyone who comes forward with or without warranty. They know there's problems with the engines but for some people the problems are after the warranty.

The most insulting part has to be the fact they won't admit there's problems...

He's looking at getting me a sooner appointment and actually asked a few questions rather than say 'we'll have a look when it comes in' we checked that the correct oil had been put in at the previous service.

Next is the consumption test! I know the car is out of warranty but knowing there was a problem, surely that would work in my favour given I was to take it further? There's so many problems I actually think it would be insulting for them to do anything other than put this right for anyone who comes forward with or without warranty. They know there's problems with the engines but for some people the problems are after the warranty.

Your certainly right there. They need to hold their hands up and be accountable. Dont see that happening though. On a different note. Glad youve had a bit more of a positive outcome/answer.

There is a problem with 1.4TSI CAVE engines. I've had Black Fabia VRS on 62 plate since may last year, had 3 oil consumption tests and 2 replacement engines. Just rejected the car as had enough as now reached 9500 miles

Mate you are abit late to the party. Have a search- there are literally dozens of oil use problem threads on here, it's very well documented. The outrageous thing is that Skoda UK refuse to acknowledge there is an issue despite all he people with replacement engines.

Sorry to hear you are having problems tho, hope you get it sorted and skoda do the decent thing!

So, had the test results today. Worked out as 2.9 litres/1000 miles which is even worst than I expected. Rung skoda back with the results and the guy asked 'have you had a quote for a new engine and how much are you willing to pay towards it?' To which I replied with 'for an engine with less than 20,000 miles on I'm offended that you'd even ask me that' he then said he wasn't trying to put words In my mouth just wanted to know what I'm expecting. Just have to wait until early next week for a call back now!

Was this a call to a Skoda Dealership who did the test,  

 

or to 'Skoda UK' who you will be looking to pay the cost of a new Engine and the Labour?

Skoda UK or SKODA are the ones you are going to have to talk with if the car was out of the original Warranty,

unless you have an Extended Warranty where you bought it from.

My partners was straight forward,just in warranty dealership ordered replacement engine that day.

Yours is obviously more complex-but the end result should be (even with your bit of negligence) the engine was not fit for purpose-replace in my view

Okay so a brief update...

 

I dropped the car in this morning for the results phase of the test. The upshot is VW have quoted the figure as 0.5l in 1000km, and mine is a touch over that. Their first port of call for them I've been told is to change the air filter and see if that cures it (really cant see how). For me this means putting the stock system back on as I'm running the VWR induction kit. I'm booked in again for a couple of weeks time to get this done, I'm then assuming it will be another 600 miles and go back to test again. Time will tell how this plays out....

 

Personally if an induction kit is having any effect on the oil consumption I will be shocked, and I will be quite prepared to look for an independent engineer's investigation through AA or RAC or the like.
