VRS Spring Clean - what wax & sealer?

Featured Replies

I'm going to be giving my race blue VRS a good clean for the summer. Given that it had paint correction last year I don't think it needs a polish. I'm thinking of the following:

Rinse

Snow foam

Wash with 2BM & lambs wool mitt

Wax

Sealer

Question is, what wax and what sealer?

I'd suggest after the snowfoam you use farecla detox shampoo with a dolop of APC and a squirt of fairy to remove all the old wax, rinse, then use iron x to remove any ferrous contaminates, rinse again followed by some tardis tar remover and guess what's next....another rinse. Then shampoo with ag shampoo conditioner and then use a farecla clay mit well lubricated with more shampoo. Rinse and dry off and you should now be back to nice clean paintwork. According to the experts (ChrisRS) a wax works better on dark colours and a sealer on light ones. I use ag high dev and with regular top ups with sonax QD it is still beading very nicely nearly 6 months on. There's probably better options for wax/sealants but I've still got 3/4 of a pot left!

Oh and yes use the 2bm for each shampoo stage. I got a dooka wash pad after Chris said how good they are....he's not wrong.

As he said

Always sealer first, wax last if you want to use both

I would lightly polish the paintwork with some paint cleanser like Dodo Juice Lime Prime first, than add wax and top this up every 2 or 3 weeks with Sonax BSD

Thanks guys, that's a great help. Ade mentions AG High Def and says there may be better ones. What do you both recommend for wax as I need to go out and buy some anyway.

It largely depends on what you want your wax to do John. High dev is a hard wax that comes in a smallish pot and needs to be applied sparingly by hand with one of their applicator pads so is a bit old school and probably isn't suitable for anyone who wants to use a DA polisher to apply their LSP. They would use something more creamy I guess. Its then a case of buffing it off with some good quality mf cloths- don't get their perfect polishing cloth as its naff and when you cut some off the roll bits fall off it all over your car. AG do not recommend using high dev and a sealer. When I asked (because I've got some of their extra gloss protection left) they said if I wanted to use a sealer then their super resin polish was the one to use 1st. I remember Chris posting a long term test someone did on the major players and high dev came out as one of the longer lasting. There are other waxes and sealers you can use that give a deeper show shine, but some don't last as long as high dev so need reapplying more regularly. I think the really keen ones use this type in the summer and something more hard wearing to protect their car through the winter months.

I tend to wax mine twice a year and high dev works for me on this basis and I use it both in the winter and summer.

I think the general concensus amongst the detailing officianadoes who have far more experience than me is that in general there's nothing wrong with AG stuff but there's better stuff out there if you have specific needs. No doubt Chris will advise you further

Any wax or sealer John

Whatever your budget.

What have you got already?

I need to buy some wax Chris. I already have some AG stuff such such as SRP and EGP. I've also got Bilt Hamber QD. I'm planning on getting some Sonax BSD as per your recommendation.

Well, in your case I would buy some

Farecla Wax

or Megs Gold Class Wax

or AG Hi Def Wax ...

or Mer Hybrid from Halfords and top it with Sonax BSD (Its a sealer but works as well with a Wax LSP)

Many thanks Chris, I'll get myself one of those.
