Stop Start - Power Consumption is High

Featured Replies

Just had this back from dealers after having intermittent issues with the Stop Start.  It will not engage the stop mechanism and the info on the HU says "Power Consumption Is High".

I sent it in last Friday and it came back but the issue persists - I asked for a call back from the Service Manager but heard nothing back yet.

The power usage on the car is minimal - nothing plugged into cigarette socket, USB, etc, Window heater off, AirCon and heating off, Heated Mirrors off.

The only thing being used is the DRL's and the head unit.

Engine Temp is around 90 degrees.

Tried switching driving modes through ECO, Normal, Sport - nothing fixes this.  It will just suddenly display the eco tip about putting it in neutral when it starts working.

Am at a loss on this one.

So you've got an fault that also displays an error message on screen which the dealers have seen and they've just given the car back and said they can't fix it?

Fills me with confidence

Speak to SUK.

Is "power consumption too high" an error, or the reason shown for stop/start not activating. From my reading of the manual, I would take it to be low battery charge.

Isn't there a way of displaying the battery charge status from the maxidot?

Yes with the ignition off hold the trip reset button until "Battery Status" is displayed and let go.

Just phoned dealer back. No errors on system when on diags.

All I can do is take it in when the issue arises and show them.

I checked battery. 80% which should be more than enough.

They said it could be on a DPF regen cycle. Informed them it was a petrol.

Can't find anything on on board computer. Might have to stick multimeter in the glove box and get out and check battery and alternator when it happens again.

What is the average run time after each restart?

Power consumption too high is not an error message. It is a bit misleading, as owners assume it refers to items running at the time it is displayed. Within certain parameters, you will also get this message if the engine run time is not sufficient to put back the energy taken at the last restart.

Charge your battery first. It isn't an error, it is a valid reason for Start Stop to be disabled as the battery voltage is too low.

My battery charge indicator has not gone above 80%, even after a 3 hour motorway drive in daytime, it isn't a reliable indication of battery charge in my opinion.

The only time I have seen this message I had the stereo on reasonably loud, and had been sat stationary for about 15 minutes and the engine magically started itself, so I checked the Start Stop status and that message was displayed. After a couple of minutes the Start Stop kicked in again, so I put it down to battery voltage.

I've also had this come up but only when sitting outside of school waiting for the kids with the stereo on and eventually the car started back up.

I'm not sure about the Skoda's but a friend worked for Ford and I'm sure he said their stop start would stop working (by design) if battery charge was <80%.

A DIS report went into SUK - They don't know what the issue is.

It seems to be random, as whilst I was on the phone (hands free) to the dealer, I pulled up and turned the ignition off, restarted it to try and force it back into life and this time it was accompanied by the message "Engine must be running".

Dealer has said drop it off with them AGAIN - and pay another £12 for the insurance for a loan Fabia.

I agree that the power could be low - but it's random when it does it.

I can hop in the car first thing in the morning - do a long run and it be fine.

Next day it won't work at all.

Day after it works then stops working and then starts again.

If it is that the battery is too low, then it's a misleading message.

Next time it happens - I'll stop when safe to do so and grab the multimeter out of the boot and run it across the battery to get an accurate reading, then when it starts again will do the same.

On a nice run to North Wales this weekend with dogs, Child n SWMBO - so will see how it fares then.

Engine must be running normally shows on a diesel when a regen is taking place. Yours is petrol though isn't it?

Yep, petrol. Although dealer did mention it would do that during a regeneration cycle.

Which is a little disturbing!

Which is a little disturbing!

Not as disturbing as when I had to tell them its a petrol. Twice, to 2 different dealership staff.

Wow..makes you feel comfortable handing the car over to them. I just hope they realise it's a petrol come service time.

Interesting that my replacement car has the same issue. They've been disinterested in fixing this or any of the other problems that have manifested at the same time.

Have you had any luck getting it fixed?

I turn my stop-start off, can't be bothered with it. Okay, might cost a little in fuel but I do low mileage anyway. I just find it irritating and, frankly, unnecessary. Too many toys for my liking.

Having said that I am enjoying (the rest of) my new petrol 1.4 car, especially in sport mode!!

Do you leave your climate on Auto or do you set fan speed manually?

Do you have a dashcam or anything else plugged in?

The only time I have seen that message on the Start Stop was when I had the Columbus cranked up really loud, so it must have been drawing some current!

Sent from my HTC One_M8 using Tapatalk

I had set my heated screen to come on automatically in the climate control menu which sometimes stopped the SS from working so have now disabled it. Don't know if the OP has the winter pack or not, but could be another cause.

Fan on auto, nothing else on. Dash cam usually unplugged but sometimes left on (it draws 3w supposedly...)

Got the dreaded "error : start stop system" message last night too. Dealers confirmed it has the latest software with SS fixes in and has booked it in next week.

Never ending.

Been having this exact problem on  my seat leon which is  made by the same  group as  skoda. I've turned everything off and the  vehicle information still   says power consumption to high as the reason  the stop  start  wont  work Surly a decent  alternator should provide enough  charge to   allow this functionality to work ??

Have you had the car from new? Are you sure nobody has been at it with VCDS or ODBEleven? For those who want to permanently disable start/stop through you can do so by changing a value that basically tricks the car into thinking that power consumption is permanently too high and as such start/stop will never kick in. I'm wondering whether maybe a previous owner might have done this on yours. Just a thought...

Thank you Mri_ice  yes  had it from new and only the dealers have touched it and  when i  drove it to them  which was a roundtrip  of  72 miles then it did work  for a day and then s stopped working again  which suggests it hasn't been  disabled which is what leads  me to think its an issue with   the alternator not keeping the battery  topped up  and charged
